Thanks for rplying on my comment. I know Arun's love story in india will be a little unrealistic. But children can visit their parents in India. And just becoz Karan and Arun are brought up in America, it is not that any of them can't fall in love with an indian girl. Karan is married, but there are chances for Arun. Right? :-) ;-) By the way i will love the story in any way you write it. And i want Armaan to say something to Kalpana for her misbehaviour with Riddhima.

Part 61

I can very well understand how you must feel having lost your sister so suddenly. But let me tell you, I too loved her like a sister." At that her voice choked and she couldn't continue further. Everyone around just stood staring at her dumbstruck. Hearing the sincerity in her voice, even Kalpana mellowed down. As Riddhima wiped her eyes with her saree pallu, Armaan also unobtrusively flicked away the tears from his eyes. Karan came and held her hand saying, "I know whatever you say is cent percent true, but I don't understand how you could."

R: I'd be lying if I said I wasn't jealous of her. But I can swear on everything dear to me, I never wished her any evil. I've always prayed for their happiness even when I was so far away from them, with no clue whatsoever about their lives. And the only reason was that my athaan's happiness meant the world to me.

K: If you really wanted to know about them you could have found it from the bank where they were sending you the money. Karuna always felt very bad about the fact that you didn't even care to acknowledge it once, over all these years.

When Armaan opened his mouth to say something, Riddhima caught his hand and shook her head. But Armaan said "No Riddhima, the matter has to be cleared once and for all. Everybody is under the misconception that you were getting a lump sum every month." Then turning to his sons he said "You both also need to know the truth. Riddhima had sworn me into secrecy that I shouldn't mention it to anyone but I can't keep quiet hearing her getting blamed for no fault of hers. Contrary to all your beliefs, she was the sufferer." All of them looked at Armaan with a puzzled look.

Ushering them all into the hall he said "It's better we all sit and talk over the whole matter." When all of them were seated, he began; "From the time I came to the US, Riddhima didn't get a single penny. For twenty years whatever amount we transferred from here went to a bank account in Chennai, which was in Karuna's name." then turning to his sons he said "It was for claiming that money that I took your signatures on those forms."

K: But you said it was mummy's money.

A: Yes, it was in your mummy's name with your granny as the nominee. I'm sure both of them would surely have wanted you two only to have it. Am I right Kalpana?

Before she could reply Arun intervened saying "But that's rightfully perima's."

K: I'm sorry Riddhima, I'm sure even Karuna didn't know anything about it. It must have all been my mother's doing.

A: All of us know that very well. But none of you would be able to even imagine what Riddhima went through, all those years.

R: Athaan please.

A: No Riddhima they have all got to know the truth.

Turning to the others he said "She only had a roof over her head and not a penny in her hand. She didn't take a single paise from anyone as charity or even loan. She had only studied till the eighth standard, but she faced all the adversities boldly. She went back to school at the age of twenty five to study with 13 years old girls. Here such things maybe common. But in India people poked fun at her, called her names because she was a woman abandoned by her husband. And they had no qualms about assigning a reason for it too. According to them she was abandoned because she was a barren woman ' a woman who couldn't have children.

Putting his arm around Riddhima's shoulder and wiping her tears, which were flowing copiously from her eyes, he continued. "But the most surprising thing is their talks didn't embitter her one bit. On the contrary it motivated her to make a name for herself in the cruel society. She did her training, became a teacher and now has her own school. Now people very respectfully call her principal amma. It definitely wasn't an easy way up. Inspite of everything, she still had a store of love in her heart, which she showered on an orphan girl, whom she adopted. Till I went back to the village she had no one to call her own except that girl, that girl's husband and daughter. And of course my uncle, her Balu mama, who remained a friend, philosopher and guide to her, through all these years."

Now all of them, even the males were sniffing and wiping their tears. Armaan wasn't done yet.

A: When I went back to the village I saw that she had built a perfect life for herself, where there was no place for me. She held no grudge against me but didn't show any signs of wanting me back in her life. I would have returned back here, had it not been for my Balu uncle who lashed out me at every available opportunity. Recounting to me incidents from her life, which made me squirm. Only then I actually realized how inhuman I had been. I longed to do something special for, which no else could. Not just as repentence for my selfish behavior but because I felt she deserved it.

I felt that of all the cruelties she had faced in her life, the worst was being branded a barren woman when she was still a virgin. Yes, the truth was I never accepted her as my wife in the real sense. Till I got married to Karuna, we both stayed in the same house like two strangers. She was just my unpaid housekeeper, who washed, cleaned and cooked my food. In return I provided her free lodging and boarding. I used to never even talk to her for days.

Arun: But perima how could you live with a man for so many years when he literally ignored even your presence?

R: Then I used to blindly follow whatever my mother had taught me. She had told me that a woman's role in a family is comparable to salt in cooking. If the amount of salt in the food is perfect, its presence is not felt. But when it's missing, it makes the whole food tasteless. Similarly, as long as a woman keeps fulfilling everyone's wants, she should not expect to be appreciated. Only her absence will make everyone realize her worth.

A: That's the saddest part; even your absence didn't make me realize your worth. Anyways, after coming back to the village also were living in the same house, on different floors, just like 2 aquaintances. It was then that her daughter Suja revealed to me that all her life her amma had only yearned to live as a wife to her athaan, but was afraid to take the step as she was worried what the people would say. She didn't want to put the reputation that she had so painstakingly built, over so many years, at stake.

R: You won't believe how cruel people can be. Intitially I managed to bear everything, because I was young and bold. But I couldn't imagine going through the same again at this age. I didn't have the strength for it.

A: But I decided I had to somehow get her to live with me as my wife, because the only thing which could in any way compensate for all the atrocities I had subjected her to, was to give her the joy of motherhood. I wanted the very people who had branded her, to accept the fact that if she could mother a child at this age, she surely wasn't 'a barren woman'. But unfortunately that was when we came to know about her CKD. At the very first meeting with the doctor I understood that she needed a kidney transplant immediately, but the wait for a donor kidney could go on for years. I immediately got myself tested as a prospective donor. And luckily the match was found to be good though not perfect. It felt as if God had sent me back to the village for that sole purpose only. Otherwise why would I think of even going to the village after all these years?

Both the boys noticed that their dad who never ever prayed to God or followed any ritual was today talking like this. And they also knew that their perima was the reason behind it.

"I knew if she realized who the donor was, she'd never accept it." Armaan continued. "So I arranged things in such a way that the donor would remain anonymous. But somehow she came to know about it, but thankfully only after the surgery. Once again taking advantage of the situation, I manipulated her to come and stay with me on the pretext that it would difficult for her to climb the stairs."

R: Nothing like that. He took so much care of me before and after the surgery, I can't tell you.

K: So you forgave dad for all the trouble he put you through for 20 years, just because he gave you his kidney?

Riddhima just smiled shaking her head and said "He didn't just donate me his kidney, he's given me a new life. To tell you all very honestly, I never ever blamed athaan for anything. I had got him married to a girl of his choice, of my own free will. I felt that was my destiny and God didn't want me to be a part of my athaan's life. If I blamed anyone, it was mother who forced him to marry me. But that was also very rarely because I knew she was a very innocent and weak woman, whose intentions were for my good only.

Kal: Why didn't you ever seek a divorce? You could have got married and lived a happy life with someone else.

R: In our village legal divorce was unheard of. In the first place we never even got our marriages registered legally. I never thought of remarriage because nobody would marry a girl who couldn't bear a child.

A: Of all the atrocities I committed on her that was the greatest. She got unnecessarily labelled as a barren woman.

He couldn't control himself then and broke down crying like a small child. Putting her hand on his shoulder she said "Please athaan, enough of talking about the past. All that matters we are together now and will be for the rest of our lives. There's no use making ourselves sad by thinking about the past which we cannot change or worrying about the future which we can't foretell. Let's thank God for giving us this day. Today our boys are with us and I have also got a new akka."

Then turning to Kalpana she asked "I can call you that can't I?" Kalpana nodded with a smile but her eyes were full. Armaan stood up and passing his hand through his hair said "Excuse me for the outburst. It wasn't to win your sympathy or anything but I'd had enough of Riddhima being blamed unnecessarily. And once I started, I couldn't stop." Shekar came and patted Armaan's shoulder saying "No need to feel bad about it."

Kal: Yes Armaan, it's good you cleared our misunderstanding. Otherwise I'd have blamed Riddhima unnecessarily. To tell you frankly, when I'd heard that my sister was marrying a married man, I was very upset. When I questioned her about his first wife, she had told me such nice things about you that I couldn't believe it. But today I know everything she said was absolutely true. You are too good to be true.

"That she is" Armaan said smiling at his darling "but it wasn't easy wooing her back." That made everyone smile and Riddhima glare at him. Then beaming with pride he said "But finally condescended to live with me as my wife." And pulling up Riddhima, hugged her tightly in front of all.

All of them clapped spontaneously while Riddhima stood blushing beetroot red. The boys also stepped forward and joined in the hug. When they broke up a few minutes later, Kalpana came and hugged Riddhima saying "It feels like I got my younger sister back today, but I wish I didn't have to lose one to get the other."

S: If Karuna hadn't been so foolhardy, she'd have been alive today.

"Shekar" Armaan shouted to stop him from saying anything further.

P.S: Going to be away for a week. Family emergency, sorry. Love ssh57.

Awesome update.
Eagerly waiting for this part, so now truth is out.
Hope now Kalpana and her Husband realize what Riddhima did for her Sister. Reading this part i feel so bad for Riddhima, she suffered so much compared to Karuna.
Di, i really wish in the next part, Karan call her Amma instead of perima, because he loves her more than his real mother, and i think Riddhima deserve this.
Di, i also want Karan and Arun visit india.
Give us some AR romance also na Di.
No problem Di, safe journey
Update next part super soon.
Thanks for the pm, take care.
