Part 53
R: Let's call him right now. I want to talk to him.
Looking at his watch Armaan said "It's just 8 0'clock in his time zone. He musn't be awake still." When she said "Let's try na", he dialed Arun's number and handed the phone to her. For a long time it just kept ringing. But Riddhima wasn't the sort to give up easily. On the second call a drawling voice said "Hello dad, what's up so early in the morning?"
It's me, Perima, kanna," Riddhima giggled into the phone. Immediately the tone changed and he asked "hi Perima, how'r you doing?"
R: I'm fine kanna what about you?
Arun: I'm super.
R: Sorry for waking you up so early but I didn't have the patience to wait till you woke up.
Arun: Patience for what Perima?
R: Kanna, Perima wants a favour from you. Promise me you'll give it to me.
Arun: Perima if it's something I can, you know I definitely will. What's it?
R: Kanna I want to see you. Your dad and me are going over to our house and will be there for a week or two. I, no we, want you come and stay with us there, for a few days at least. Will you please?
Arun: Perima it's not as if I don't want to, but I'll have to check my program schedule.
R: Kanna, can't you please plan something for a couple of days at least. Just for Perima's sake?
Arun: I can only promise that I'll try my best.
R: That's enough kanna. I'm sure you'll find a way.
Then after talking for sometime about the Godh bharai function and general things, Riddhima handed the phone to Armaan. He also reiterated Riddhima's request saying he wanted to discuss some important matters with him and also get his signatures on certain documents, to pass on the inheritance his mother had left for him. Like Karan, Arun was also surprised to learn about it. But Armaan pacified him saying that he'd explain everything to him in person.
When Armaan and Riddhima informed Karan and Linda about their plans, at first they tried to dissuade them. But Riddhima assured them that they'd be back well before Linda's delivery. The next morning they called for a taxi and left at the same time as Karan and Linda. Armaan had called his dear friend and neighbor, Bhaskar, and informed him that they would be arriving by mid-morning.
Riddhima was surprised at the speed of the taxi and the free roads. Unlike the main road in their town, there was no bumper to bumper traffic here. It was a freeway in the real sense. Armaan pointed certain structures on the way and also showed her how the bridges made away with cross signals at various points. Hence they were able to cover such a long distance in a couple of hours. "This distance is almost same as that from our town to Chennai. But there we take 4-5 hours" Riddhima compared.
When they reached their house, they unloaded their luggage near the door and paid off the taxi. Leaving their luggage there, Armaan dragged her to a house on the opposite side of the road. When he rang the bell, an old woman opened the door. Armaan immediately hugged her asking "How are you amma?" She laughed and moving a little away from him said "See I'm fit as a fiddle." Then looking at Riddhima said "Vaa ma.(Welcome)" Armaan introduced them " Riddhima, this is Janaki amma, Bharati's amma but in general amma to all of Bharati's and Bhaskar's friends." Riddhima joined her hands together saying "Namaskaram amma." Amma motioned them towards the sofa saying "Come, sit."
As she limped to go in, Armaan caught her hand and taking her towards the sofa said "You sit and talk to Riddhima. I'll go and fetch water." Riddhima smiled at her but her mind was on the luggage they had left at their doorstep. So she sat quietly fidgeting with her hands. Seeing her preoccupied the old lady thought perhaps she wasn't feeling well. So she asked "How are you? How's your health? Hope the journey was ok." But before Riddhima could reply, Armaan came with the water glasses saying "Now she's perfectly fine. Thanks to all your prayers."
Taking back thefinished glass from Riddhima and putting it on the centre table he whispered "Let's take amma's blessings." When both of made namaskar, the lady blessed them "May you have a long and happy life. May God fulfill all your wishes." "Thanks amma, your blessings is all that we need" Armaan said as he sat down next to her. Riddhima couldn't hold her anxiety any longer. "We've left our luggage outside" she reminded Armaan. "No problem" he replied but amma got up saying "Wait I'll get the keys, better keep it inside and come."
When Armaan took the keys and turned to go, Riddhima also turned to follow him. "Where are you going?" amma asked. Saying "He'll keep it and come. You come in and rest for a while. I've almost finished cooking. I'll join you shortly" she took Riddhima to a bedroom. As she was about to go Riddhima said "No I'll come to the kitchen with you." Amma smiled and nodding, took her along.
Riddhima saw a number of covered vessels on the huge dining table as they walked into the kitchen. She noticed rice boiling on the stove. Checking one grain amma said "It'll take 5 more minutes. Let's sit at the table. Then uncovering each item one by one showed that she had prepared all Armaan's favourite dishes. When Riddhima asked "Amma why did you take so much trouble?" She replied "it's so much fun to cook for someone who enjoys food so much. Both my daughter and son-in-law just peck at the food. The list of what they don't eat is longer than what they eat. They are so weight conscious you see."
Armaan was back in a few minutes just as amma put the rice in the colander, to drain off the excess water. They all sat chatting, Armaan catching up with all the latest gossip and enquiring about their common friends. Then they enjoyed the sumptuous lunch, Armaan appreciating each and every item. She was unhappy to see Riddhima eat so little but didn't compel her when she explained about her diet restrictions. She wouldn't let them go even after lunch but Armaan promised to come back later that evening and they left.
On coming to their house, they unpacked their luggage and then had a short nap. When Armaan called out to her, Riddhima was woken up with the smell of fresh coffee. Seeing her surprised, he told her that he had informed his friend about their plans and he had stocked up some things for them, during the weekend.
"But we decided about this trip only yesterday" Riddhima started and then seeing the smile on his face realized that she had merely fallen in with his already made plan. So she asked "What made you feel so sure I'd come? What if I had refused?"
A: Even then, I'd have had to come to settle certain things. So the grocery wouldn't have gone to waste.
Having finished their coffee he said come I'll show you the house. She hadn't realized that the house was 2 storied. They had entered into the hall with the kitchen on one side and a passage leading to a bedroom on the other side. At the far end was the family room which had a staircase leading upstairs. There were three bedrooms on top beside the master bedroom. Karan's and Arun's rooms and a guest room. Seeing picturesof Ganpathi and other God's there, Riddhima asked "Is this the pooja room?"
A: No this was the room occupied by Karuna's mother. She had the photos only to put on a faade of a religious woman. In reality she was a venomous snake. But Karuna couldn't understand that. That's why she didn't want anything to be changed in that room, even after her death.
Touching his arm Riddhima said "It's not good to talk ill of someone who's no more. Forget it." "Why had he unpacked their things in the downstairs bedroom?" she wondered and as if reading her thoughts he said "I thought you'll find it difficult climbing up and down. Hence the downstairs bedroom would be good for us." She smiled and nodded in assent thinking to herself "I wouldn't have wanted to occupy the room used by the two of you anyways."
Then it struck her that while they had unpacked she had noticed a lot of Armaan clothes in that closet. So she asked "Why were your clothes in the downstairs bedroom cupboard?" "I used to sleep there if I got back very late, so that I didn't disturb the others" he explained but omitted saying that it was there that he slept most of the days. Though he had mentioned to her about rift between him and Karuna, he didn't want to tell her the details as he was afraid she might think he was saying so to please her.
In the evening when Riddhima opened the fridge to see what she could make for the evening, Armaan asked her not to bother for today.
A: I have to go to a car rental just a few blocks away. I'm planning to hire a car for the period of our stay here. Or else it will be difficult going about. If you feel upto it, we could drive to an Indian restaurant from there and then go and meet Bhaskar and Bharati.
R: Yes, that's a good idea. I would like to see around this place.
They were getting ready to go, when the doorbell rang. Armaan opened the door and was surprised to see Bharati and Bhaskar there. There had come over directly after work. The friends hugged each other and just then Riddhima came out asking "Who is it athaan?" before Armaan could even introduce them, Bhaskar came towards Riddhima asking "What did you just say?" Surprised by his question Riddhima hesitantly said "I asked who it was."
BR: After that?
All of them kept looking at him as if he was talking in riddles. So he clarified- "What did you call him?" looking towards Armaan.
R: Athaan.
BR: OMG that sounds like music to the ears. So romantic. Just like in the Tamil films na?
Then indicating his wife said "and this woman here just keeps screaming Bhaskar, Bhaskar, all the time."
While both the males started guffawing with laughter, seeing Riddhima's strange expression Bharati came to her rescue saying "Hi I'm Bharati and this comedian is my husband Bhaskar. Please don't mind him; he's not always like this. Sometimes he's even worse." That made the ladies laugh with Armaan joining in and Bhaskar pretending to be hurt.
Then turning to Bhaskar with a smile Riddhima said "I'm still a country brute. Not used to your American ways." At once Bhaskar said "Honestly I didn't mean to make fun of you. It really sounded very nice. I'm sorry if I've hurt your feelings. It brought to mind my college days. While watching Tamil films then, I used to imagine that one day some girl would also address me like that. It was wonderful hearing that word after so many years."
Then Bharati came and putting her arm around Riddhima said "We were both eagerly waiting to meet you. We came to know about you only when Armaan moved to the village. We had requested his BIL not to move him to India and that we'd take care of him here. But he was adamant and took him to Chennai. Today we are glad that he did." Then taking hold of both her hands Bharati said "We couldn't believe that such a woman could exist in these times also. You are really very great Riddhima. And exemplar to today's girls who don't hesitate to walk out of the bond of matrimony for the silliest reasons."
Armaan came to them and said "Actually Riddhima, in a way these two were responsible for us getting together. Initially when I had just moved to the village, weighed down by guilt, I was hesitant to even approach you, even though in my heart, I wanted to make up to you in some way for all that I had put you through. They were the ones who encouraged me to listen to my heart and keep trying. Initially I used to feel dejected by your aloofness. But they convinced me not to give up so easily. And it was to them only that I confided about donating my kidney. And you won't believe it, they didn't even hesitate for a moment before telling me that it was best thing I could ever do for you."
Riddhima was deeply moved and looked up at Bharati with tears in her eyes. When she asked "Didn't you fear for your dear friend's life?" Bharati said "Yes, we did. But, both of us felt that Armaan would literally die of guilt if anything were to happen to you. So it was better if he were to die this way." Bhaskar intervened saying "We thought if the time for his death had come, he wouldn't have survived the major accident he met with. Fate definitely had some other purpose in keeping him alive. We were the only ones he could confide in and it was our reply which would make him take the right decision. Hence we didn't hesitate in asking him to go ahead."
Smiling broadly but with tears flowing down her cheeks Riddhima said, "He's really very lucky to have such wonderful friends like you." Then turning to her athaan said "I thought you only collected a lot of wealth here, but you also found these priceless gems here. I congratulate you for that."
BR: That's very sweet of you Riddhima but before we forget let's tell you what we came to say in the first place.
BI: We four are going out for a wonderful dinner in an hour's time. it's valentine's day remember?
"Is it?" both Armaan and Riddhima asked in unison and then all of them laughed together.
