CHAPTER 8:
Maan looked in annoyance at his watch. He was getting late and his silly twit of a wife showed no signs of stopping her drama. He watched in irony as his wife (the word sent shudders down his spine) hugged a young boy and girl, who he assumed were her cousins and started crying again.
They say "Patience is a virtue," but then he never claimed to be a virtuous guy! And patience was definitely not one of his traits! Still, not wanting to create a scene and upset Darji, he took a deep breath to gather as much of it as possible. He cleared his throat to grab her attention, while wishing all the while that he could just dump her here and forget about this fiasco.
Darji looked at him and noting his annoyance came forward "Geet puttar…bas ho gaya…chalo abhi jaane ka samay ho gaya." The words had the opposite effect and led to another bout of wailing by the two girls, making him silently seethe in anger!
Finally after a lot of cajoling, they started with the ritual of bidai. Geet was made to throw rice over her shoulders as they walked out of the marriage hall.
When they reached the car, Darji took Geet's hand and placed it in Maan's, clasping his hands above theirs while saying with false sweetness "Puttarji humare bitiyaan ka khayal rakhna. Aaj se ye teri zimmedari hai."
Maan looked at Darji sharply, trying to understand the hidden meaning behind the words he knew were just for pretense, so he missed the trembling of her hand in his at Darji's words. The touch of her soft hand felt alien in his, as he was unused to anything unyielding. "Maan tera dimaag kharab ho gaya hai!" he thought before gently unclasping his hand and moving towards the driver's seat.
As her eyes were clouded with tears, Geet didn't notice the absence of any bridal adornments on the car. But the guests did, and started whispering amongst themselves. Already a few questions were being raised about the hastiness over the wedding.
"Ajeeb baat hai, gaadi pe koi sajawat nahi?" said someone in the crowd. "Koi aise bhi karta hai kya? Na koi sajaatwat, na koi phool, itna rukha rukha.." "Hamare Sharmaji ki betia ki shaadi mei to car ka rang bhi dikhaai nahi de raha tha ..itne phoolon se sajaai hui thi" "Arre woh toh kuch bhi nahi hai, Geet Darji ki poti hai aur itni jaldbazi main uski shaadi karvayi ja rahi hai... yeh baat kya kam ajeeb hai" said another. "Main toh kehti hoon, zaroor koi baat hogi" joined in another female while the rest of the group sneered and nodded in acceptance.
Unaware of the aura surrounding her rushed marriage, the talks of the pind, Geet sat in the passenger seat of the car while Rajji came to help her fit in her lehanga which was hanging out. As she made sure that her Geet didi was comfortable, she leaned over to kiss her cheek one last time and whisper a "Take care Di. Mai babaji se roz dua maangongi ke meri Didi ko mere hisse ki bhi saari khushiyaan mile." As tears threatened to fall once more, Geet's throat choked over and all she could manage was a shake of her head.
"Jiju?" a voice broke into his thoughts and he turned to see the small boy at his window trying to control his tears manfully. "Meri didi ka khayal rakhna please….rakhoge na?" he asked, tears finally dripping on his cheeks. "Aah the innocence of childhood!" Maan thought sardonically. Not knowing what to reply to the little guy, he replied in his signature "Hmmm" before turning away to start the car.
The girls held each other crying their hearts out, till Maan revved the engine and started the car, causing them to loosen the grip and finally leave it.
She looked behind one last time to watch her life flash before her eyes. She remembered the first time she had come here. She was 14 yrs old and still in shock over her parents untimely demise. The accident which had taken her parents away from her had left her all alone in this world. She never knew she had family in this world. But suddenly her Darji had come to take her with him to Hoshiarpur. She hadn't wanted to leave her house in Delhi, but then she didn't have a choice. There was no one else to take her in. Her Darji had made it clear to her on the first day itself that he had brought her here only because it was his duty. It had been made abundantly clear to her that she was here on sufferance and was not welcomed.
She had been shocked to find that her mum had run away from home to marry her papa as her Darji had refused to accept Mohinder Handa as a potential suitor for his daughter. And so Rano had been disowned and was never welcomed back. The facts were told to her straight away without any consideration for her tender age. She had realized then and there, that her life was going to change drastically. Her parents had brought her up to think for herself and be independent. But here, she didn't have the right. She was expected to mindlessly obey everything, without any complains. The one time she had refused to comply, her first mistake, she had been locked up in her room after a few slaps from her Veerji for daring to speak in front of him. At first, she had rebelled against the impositions against her freedom, but in the end, they had broken her. A fourteen year old was no match for hundreds of years of traditions seeped in the blood and followed to the tee. The beatings and punishments had slowly killed the lively free-spirit within Geet making her withdraw into her shell.
But life throws the funniest twists. In the end, the granddaughter shunned since birth had been sent to him to care for. But Darji being the man he was, had refused to forget Rano's so-called betrayal and transferred his disappointment and anger to Geet! Making her pay for her mother's so called sins. He had taken away every bit of freedom granted to her, so that she doesn't repeat her mother's follies.
So there she was, Geet Handa, standing at a crossroad, about to embark on an unknown journey.
On one side was a man who looked like he wished she was a million miles away, while on the other side stood her family who looked relieved to be finally rid of her.
Her Darji, who had brought her here after the death of her parents, providing her with food and shelter, but never forgetting to remind her that she was here on sufferance.
Her Tejji mamaji and Preeto mamiji could barely tolerate her and considered her a burden on them.
Her Brij Veerji had only contempt for her.
And then there were Rajji and Tito, her cousins, the two people in this house who had made her life worth living, who cared for her and tried to make her smile.
Geet turned and looked back at the house where she had spent the last 4 years of her life. She couldn't say that they had been entirely unhappy. She had lots of good memories of Rajji and Tito. They had made her life bearable in this house where she was treated like an unwanted piece of dirt. Not that they had been cruel to her. Hell no! But then the frailties of the human mind are such that the unsaid can also pierce your soul so deeply that words are seldom necessary. It was made clear to her in a thousand subtle ways that she was here under duress and she should be grateful for the shelter she had been provided with. So she had led her life within herself, not asking for anything more than to get by each day peacefully.
To escape from the reality of her lonely self, Geet had formed her own dream world. It wasn't anything special or different from what thousands of other girls her age dream. It was the dream which every girl dreams. Of a Prince Charming, wearing a sehra, coming to her on a white horse and sweeping her away in his arms, far away from this life. Someone who would love her unconditionally, only her. Who would make her the centre of his universe. Jiski har subah Geet se shuru ho, aur har raat Geet pe khatam.
But then she had forgotten that her destiny had never been molded by her dreams. It was always decided by someone else! She had forgotten that she didn't have the right to dream either. Her destiny had already been decided by others and she had always bent her head and accepted her fate without complains. She had somehow missed her adolescence in the hurry to grow up and mature to an age way above her coz of circumstances forced on her innocent soul. The happiness and love of childhood remained locked in her heart whispering its sweet memories whenever reality was too much for her bear. It was these memories which gave her the courage to get up each day and face the world, turning an unconcerned face to the harsh realities of her existence.
It was no wonder that once again her dreams of a Prince Charming had been taken away before they could even take root. Her Darji had fixed this marriage for her in spite of her numerous protests, demanding the payback for taking her in all those years ago. Her pleas of wanting to study more had fallen on deaf ears. Once again Geet had to stifle her desires and bow her head to destiny's play.
So here she was, going away to unknown lands with the man whose name she now bore. Geet Maan Singh Khurrana. It did have a nice ring to it, she thought before stifling it! She looked at his grim profile from the corner of her eye, his forbidding stance preventing her from attempting to break the ice between them.
He was a stranger to her. But from now onwards her life and destiny were entwined with his. Yes it was true that she knew nothing about him. What he does, where he lives, whether he has any family since no one was present for the wedding from his side. She knew nothing about him except for three things.
His name was Maan Singh Khurrana;
Her Darji liked and trusted him the most in the world;
Like her he had agreed to this marriage under duress.
And she had been given the responsibility to make this marriage work. Her Darji had extracted a promise from her that she would give her all to this marriage and her husband.
