Here goes something!
Part 1
Opening her eyes when she felt something cool on her hand she looked up at his face. Khushi could not believe she was so close to him, in his arms, but it felt right. Like his arms were made only for her. She felt like she had finally figured out a huge jigsaw puzzle which would only get ruined by someone sooner or later.
Khushi stared at his face in concern as she could see tiny white beads of water dripping down his forehead. Involuntarily, she grabbed the end of her dupatta and brought it closer to his forehead, ignoring the look he was giving her. She gently placed the dupatta on his forehead and started to wipe the sweat off of him, smiling slightly as she saw him relax under her sudden touch.
After wiping all of the sweat away, she let her dupatta fall back down to her side and kept staring at him with eyes full of concern and affectation.
After he had told her to be quiet for 5 minutes, warning her about losing half of her salary, she had shut up instantly. Without realizing where she was going, she soon realized that she could not see Arnav anymore.
Now where did this Laad Governor go?? Hey Devi Maaiya!, she thought remembering he how he had told her to be quiet for at least 5 minutes. I wonder if it has been 5 minutes yet' Feels like I have not talked in ages! Maybe I should ask him if he is there. This stupid fog! I cannot even see 5 steps ahead of me how am I supposed to see him!? He walks so fast it feels like he is trying to win a race against the Lucknow Express! Hayyee. I am so tired! This Laad Governor is going to be the end of me I swear!, she muttered to herself trying to walk faster to maybe catch up to Arnav.
As the fog started to slip away, Khushi felt a wave of relief hit her. She had not really known, but not seeing her Laad Governor for what seemed to her like ages had really made her nervous. She convinced herself that it was only since she did not want a wild animal killing her, but deep down she knew it was also since she had not been mentally stable since the time Arnav had fainted in the morning. She felt an unknown protectiveness over him, as if it was her duty to make sure he did not overstress himself so much.
Now with the fog gone all together, Khushi saw to her dismay that Arnav was nowhere to be seen. Panicking as the thought that she was all alone hit her she screamed, "Arnavji!!! Arnavji!??! Arnvaji aap kahan hai!??!"
She looked around frantically trying to see if he was anywhere near her.
Hey Devi Maiyya. Once I find him, I promise I am not going to let this one go easily! Who does he think he is? Leaving a girl alone in the middle of a jungle! Does he not even care for him a bit? What if a jungalee animal comes to eat me?? If I survive this, I swear I am going to go tell on him to Anjaliji! Then he will forget all of his Laad Governor ways!, she thought doing the one thing she did best, blame him for every problem that occurred in her life.
Suddenly she heard a huge growl from coming from behind her. She whipped around to see if anything was there. Trying to look around the trees, she did not see anything out of the ordinary so she continued her trudge, complaining about how uncaring that Laad Governor was. She was just in the middle of her prepared speech that she going to yell at him when she saw him, when she heard a noise from behind her once again.
Part 2
She stiffened as she heard the noise getting louder. She decided that it was an animal, but for some odd reason she did not want to hang around to test her hypothesis. Making sure she was about to go the opposite way from the noise, she ran at top speed throwing glances over her shoulder to make sure she did not see the animal. She was running so fast that she hit a branch along the way which broke one of her choordi and she did not even realize that she was slightly bleeding.
Then suddenly she got the shock of her life. She heard noises from both where she was running from and where she was running too! Panicking she looked around. Noticing a huge tree Khushi sent a silent prayer to Devi Maiyya asking her to keep her safe and walked up to the tree. Looking up and down the tree, Khushi gulped and tried to calm her nerves down thinking, Oh please! In Lucknow I have climbed up trees way bigger than this one so why am I scared now?? The sensible voice in her mind responded almost immediately, Well in Lucknow, Jiji was always there standing underneath the trees telling Khushi to be careful and not to worry she was there. Payal jiji always reminded her not to go up to high and which branch to step on and which not to. Khushi was so used to this way of climbing up trees, she realized, that she did not even know where to place her foot to start climbing!
Mustering up her strength, Khushi reached up the big trunk to grab on to something. Once she felt like she had her footing on the right spot, Khushi hoisted herself up placing her foot on what she thought was a strong branch limb. Turns out it was not and Khushi had estimated wrong, putting too much weight on weak limbs. She winced as her leg slipped down the hard bark scratching her leg up.
A determined Khushi refused to give up and once again tried to climb up the tree. Hearing the noise of the animals coming closer helped her motivation further and before she knew it she was sitting at on one of the heavy branches near the bottom of the tree. She did not want to climb up to her since she did not want to hurt herself getting down.
Once up there, she started to think about Arnav once again wondering where he was. Without realizing what was happening, Khushi felt tears rolling down her checks begging Devi Maiyya to help her Laad Governor find her.
As if Devi Maiyya had heard her plea, she faintly heard a manly voice screaming her name. She heard the worry and authority in his voice even before she saw him. Relief washed over her when she saw him coming closer to the tree she was perched on. Realizing that he had not seen her, which was why he was walking away from the tree, Khushi jumped down without a second thought.
She saw all kinds of emotions flitter over his face when he saw her; surprise, relief, anger. He walked up closer to her and for once Khushi did not walk away willingly. She wanted to close the distance between them since her heart had literally stopped at the thought that he too was all alone in the jungle. Even though a junalee animal would not eat him alive, she did not want nobody to be there if he fainted or collapsed.
He was only a step away now. Khushi, who could not bare the wait anymore took a step towards Arnav and ended up falling in his arms when a jolt of pain went up her spine.
"OUCH!" Khushi yelled.
"What happened Khushi?!" questioned now a worried Arnav holding her by her shoulders and pulling her a bit away from him to look her over and see if she gotten hurt. He instantly noticed that she had a small cut on her arm, from where her choordi had probably broken, he thought to himself. As his eyes worked his way down, he saw a huge rip on her kameez. Startled he made her sit down on the ground and then leaned down himself to see straighten out her right leg.
She winced when he pulled her leg straight, trying to be as careful as possible cursing under his breath. He examined the cut and looked up at Khushi questioningly.
"Woh, when I was climbing the tree, humara leg slip kergaya tha, "she answered him before he could verbally form the question which was playing on his mouth.
Shaking his head at her innocence, he tried to move her ankle, understanding the real cause of her pain when she winced and instantly grabbed his arm with her right arm and placed her left hand over his hands which were on her foot. He looked at her pain stricken face feeling guilty once again over what he had done to Khushi Kumar Gupta.
Part 3
Khushi came back to reality when she felt Arnav bounce her lightly trying to find a comfortable way to hold her.
She had sprained her right leg so was unable to walk. At first, being the stubborn person that she is, Khushi attempted walking to the main road, but instantly fell back in Arnav's arms as soon as she took a step. Before she knew what had happened, Arnav had Khushi in his arms, and had started to walk already. Her right arm had instantly flown over his neck, trying to maintain balance. She tried to talk some sense into him, telling him to put her down but he refused to listen to her and told her to be helpful to him by shutting up. When his words sank in, Khushi stopped speaking and decided to might as well enjoy the journey she was being given.
She found it strange to keep her eyes open since they refused to leave Arnav's face. As soon as she saw his face, worry would start enveloping her and she would start talking, so to avoid that, she clamped her eyes shut. Snuggling into him more, Khushi brought her left hand up to the collar of his shirt and held on to it tightly, as if the world would collapse if she let go. Moving her head onto a better position on his shoulder, she found herself craving and loving the smell of him. Her nose dug in his shirt, inhaling as if she was breathing for the first time. For some reason, she felt alive today, in his arms, not caring a bit about the world, just him and her. Smiling at her silly thoughts, she fell asleep in his arms, having the most peacefully slumber she had had in a few days.
Khushi looked at Arnav more intently and saw that he looked very tired. She lifted her head up to get a better look at him when he looked down at her.
"Oh so now the sleeping beauty has woken up. See, we have reached the main road and you slept all through over travel through the jungle, "smirking at her hoping that she would not start complaining about putting her down anymore.
"Arnavji, will you please put me down now? I feel much better! Do not worry! Everything is okay! I can even feel my leg. Please?" she begged, not able to further stand the pain she saw in his eyes.
He only nodded feeling as if she had just asked him for his heart back. Wait what? What the ?!?! Ugh this girl is going to drive me crazy just like she is!
Once he placed her down, she grabbed the bag that he was still holding off of his arm and opened it up quickly; pulling out the coat he had been wearing earlier. Looking around to make sure cars were coming their way Khushi looked at the coat in her hand. Making sure not to move too much, since her foot still hurt when she moved, she stuffed the coat up her kurta making her look' well like she wanted to look.
Thinking about how Arnav had fainted in the morning today and then how she had made him walk carrying her for so long made her feel terrible. She promised to herself and Devi Maiyya that she would help Arnav, she started to ask for a ride. Khushi sent up a small sorry to Devi Maiyya for lying, but she knew that this was the fastest way to get what they needed the most right now, a ride.
Arnav watched in awe as Khushi pushed his coat up her kurta and balanced it around her stomach making her look' pregnant!! What the___ is wrong with this girl!? Is she mad? This is no time to play dress up!, he growled internally. Feeling the need to be close to her just in case anyone thought about messing around with her, he walked up to her, his chest slightly brushing her back as he moved up to her. He leaned down to whisper something is her ear when a big horn went off.
Part 4
Khushi felt herself shiver when Arnav's hot breath blew near her neck and ear. She felt dizzy and was about to hold on to him to steady herself when a horn went off. She looked up and what she saw made a look of satisfaction fill her eyes. A bus had stopped in front of them and now a man was coming down the bus.
She felt Arnav stiffen against her as his arm snaked around her protectively. He walked up so he was standing side to side with her. When she looked at him, she saw his calculative mind on the run, his business man instincts taking over, stressing him out even more. She placed her hand on to his which was over her "baby". He looked at her a bit surprised and confused. Khushi nodded to him, telling him it was alright.
"What are you doing out here??" the man questioned. Both Khushi and Arnav looked up at the man startled by his sudden entry into their peaceful moment.
Arnav gave him a slightly irritated look and answered, "What is your problem? Why do you care about what we are doing," calming down when he felt Khushi squeeze his hand telling him to not scare the man away, "Our car broke down and we need a ride to Nanital"
"Oh ho! You young kids are so immature. Your wife is pregnant here and you driving with her to Nanital?? You know that is such a long drive from here which is unhealthy for your wife, "the man scolded.
Before Arnav could set the man straight Khushi said, "Hain Uncleji! That was exactly what I was telling him! I told him to go to Nanital without me but he insisted to take me along saying he would not be able to attend to his business meeting there if he did not have me in front of his eyes. Heh na Ji?"
Arnav turned to look at Khushi with shocked eyes. Are you kidding me? Unbelievable! She is making me look bad in front of this man!
"What do you mean? You were the one who was dead against the idea of me driving to Nanital all alone and refused to let me leave the house until I said you were coming too. Now that is cheating. You are blaming me for something I did not even do!" Arnav intervened mischievous dancing in his eyes as he thought, Two can play at this game Khushi Kumari Gupta!
Khushi looked at him in anger and retorted, "Well what was I supposed to do? You were not feeling well in the morning and it is not like I can trust you to take care of yourself on your own! You always need someone to nag you about taking your medicine or actually going to bed and sleeping like a normal person!"
"Excuse me? Are you saying that I cannot take care of myself without your assistance??" questioned an outraged Arnav.
"Well duh that is what I am saying! I mean look at yourself, you look so weak! Yet you will never admit that and no one would even notice unless I was there to make sure you eat something and take your medicines, " Khushi replied like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
The man just stood there, looking from here to there, watching the verbal ping- pong match the husband-wife were having. Yes he was now assured that these two were actually a couple and were not lying when they had shared their story with him. Many people on the highway wanted lifts just for the sake of it and some even went to the extent of faking pregnancy and marriage to get a free ride, but these two. The way they bickered with each other reminded him of his own marriage and only a blind fool could not have seen the love and care that these two felt for each other. They were both arguing about how the other did not care for themselves. So ironic the man thought to himself.
Part 5
"Chalo," he said interrupting the argument they were having, "We will drop you off to Nanital."
"What?" questioned Arnav, "Seriously? Yes! I won't miss my meeting! Amazing!"
"See! Even now you are talking about your meeting, "complained Khushi, twiddling with her duptta now.
"Oh ho. Argue on the bus you two. For now just get out of this cold weather. You might get a cold beta, "the man said to Khushi and turned around to start walking to the bus.
Khushi followed suit, forgetting completely about her foot. As soon as she stepped on her right foot she yelped in pain since now her foot fallen asleep on top of being sprained. She fell to her knees and grabbed her foot.
Arnav turned away from Khushi getting angry at the fact that she was complaining about him to a stranger. He turned swiftly when he heard her scream full of agony. Running up to her in less than 2 seconds, Arnav bent down and lifted Khushi's head up.
"What happened?! How many times have I told you, be careful! You are in no state to be running around, but do you ever listen to me? NO! This is why I was forced to drag you along with me to Nanital. Now come on, "Arnav lectured Khushi, picking her up in his arms as if she was a toy so light.
The man had turned around in shock as well when he had heard the girl's scream but had relaxed instantly when he saw the boy run to her and pick her up so she would not have to walk to the bus. He watched with a smile playing on his lips as he heard Arnav scolding Khushi the whole way to the bus. Khushi had just wrapped herself around him and hid her head in his shoulders, as if doing that would make the poor less angry at her for being so careless. Good, he thought to himself, the boy has a backbone and sticks up to his wife. My wife usually just yells at me and I hid in fear, smiling in spite of himself.
Khushi hid in Arnav's shoulders feeling secure and warm. She felt him stop walking which is when she looked up and saw they were now on the bus. Khushi signaled to Arnav to put her down, people were looking at them strangely with some who had huge grins on their face. Ugh! When will this Laad Governor listen to me?! Why can he not just put me down! We look so strange! Why are we even standing here? Is there no seat available?
As if the man had heard Khushi's thoughts he said, "Sorry beta, looks like there is no double seat available. You will have to sit with other people. "
What!? NO! I will not leave my Arnav! You cannot make me!!, she yelled internally at the man clutching on to her Laad Governor possessively as little kids do to their toys.
Arnav felt Khushi tense against him when she heard about the seating arrangement. Obviously, she was not too fond of the idea of them sitting separately just like he was not. His thoughts were further strengthened when he felt her grab his shirt with no ideas of letting go.
The man saw their obvious discomfort at the idea of sitting away from each other which further proved to him that they were in fact man and wife. He had just been testing them one last time, just to make sure you know. These days' people can lie to such a great extent it is terrifying, he thought to himself.
He then helped Arnav and Khushi out by asking a passenger who was not sharing a seat with anyone to move back and sit with another passenger who was not sharing a seat as well. This allowed for Arnav and Khushi to sit together making Arnav feel a bit more relaxed.
Khushi still clung to his shirt and refused to let go. The man had allowed for the first seat of the row to be emptied for them so Arnav just placed her down on the seat, moving her in so he could sit as well. Finally Khushi let go of Arnav's shirt and started looking out the window at the beautiful surroundings. She grabbed Arnav's arm unconsciously and made him look outside with her, having the time of her life. Eventually she fell asleep on Arnav's shoulder, her arms locked around his arm.
Arnav watched Khushi with warm eyes as she fell asleep on his arm. He felt a wave of content hit him and decided that he could get used to this. Being close to her, the feeling of her being protective, the feeling of her needing him. He sighed happily and closed his eyes as well, falling asleep and placing his head over hers.
