CHAPTER-10

Expectations. So many times she had tried to teach herself not to keep expectations from anyone. She had almost succeeded in doing it. Till Dev came in her life. Then, when he left, she had again trained herself to not expect anything from anyone. Then why? Why was she lying on her bed, her face buried in the pillow, her tear glands threatening to explode any second. She tried to ignore the teary sting in her eyes, as she thought about the words said by Maan just two hours ago in the basement of Oberoi Hotel. Geet twisted restlessly in bed, trying to collect the train of her thoughts, and take them towards a less painful direction. But, no matter how hard she tried, all she could think about was Maan and his words. His very rude heart-shattering words. And then, when she attempted to block that, the next thing coming to her mind was her dearest uncle, bringing back the painful memories from the last two months, enough to numb her senses with agony. She sighed, trying to gulp back the huge lump in her throat instead, the tears finally oozed out.

Geet Handa. Pagal mat baan. Why the heck are you crying? She wiped her tears off furiously, when more trickled down. Did you really think Mk came there for you? He was probably there because he didn't want to suffer any business loss because of you. He was there because he thought you wouldn't be able to handle it yourself. There is NO other reason. And, whatever you have in mind for him, feelings or soft spot, or emotions, just get rid of them. Throw them out of your system. Stop inflicting so much pain on yourself. Don't let anyone invade your personal space ever again. Don't let anyone come close to you anymore. Just don't. Don't. DON'T.

Geet sat up in bed, wiping her tears, and made her way to the refrigerator. She fished out a can of coke, opened it, and chugged it down her throat, the cold coke stinging all the way down her throat grudgingly. She smiled slightly through her tears at her own childishness. She was trying to pretend that the soft drink was some kind of alcohol, which is helping her to get rid of her sadness, and sorrow. She chuckled sadly, and walked to the balcony, the can in her hand, looking out without actually seeing anything.I promise not to let myself lose control again, atleast not for or in front of Mk.

*****

She could feel the obvious tension in the air as she walked into her office the next morning. As soon as she stepped into her cabin, Pinky almost burst inside, and said panting, " Maam, we have to finish the designs of the 4th floor by the end of today. The clients want us to mail it to them before tomorrow."

Geet looked back at her calmly, and replied, " So? Whats the problem? Finish it up and send it to them."

" Maam, actually, Maan sir is still not here. He has half of the drafts, and he is not picking up his phone. I called up Adi, and he told me, there's some other problem, and Maan sir has been working on it, since last night."

Her heart fluttered almost unwillingly, with the name, but, she quickly grasped her cool and said," Why are you telling me all this? Tell someone to get the drafts from Mk's office. I'm sure we have equally qualified architects here. They can complete it, if his staff is too busy."

" But, Maam, isn't it supposed to be a group work?" However, just as she finished speaking, Geet lifted her eyes and looked at her and something in her eyes stopped Pinky from talking about it any further. She mumbled something inaudible, and rushed out of the cabin, leaving behind a cold Geet.

The phone in her cabin rang and she leaned over to pick it up. It was Adi.

" Geet, I'm sending you the files. Ask Meera and the team to work on it, and send it to the clients by tonight. I'm sorry for not being able to come over, but Maan sir is extremely worried. He has not stepped out of the conference room since last night."

" Adi, I don't need to hear so many explanations. Just send over the documents and I will deal with them. And I will do it without Mk." Adi was shell-shocked by the icy tone of Geet. She hung up on his face, leaving him even more confounded.

I just told her Maan sir has been in the conference room for over 8 hrs and she didn't even ask once!!

He has been in the conference room since last night! That means he went back to office after dinner. Is something wrong? What problem is this that Maan Singh Khurana is not being able to solve? Just then, the more powerful voice in her mind screamed out at her harshly, AND YOU'RE DOING IT AGAIN, GEET HANDA!!

She quickly shook herself out of her reverie, and once more, the cool Geet slipped into her skin, as she recalled his words last night. I wasted a whole lot of time in this damn dinner.

The whole day passed in a daze for Geet. As it happened, even after the documents came from Khurana Constructions, she found it extremely challenging concentrating on monitoring the designs. Her mind and thoughts kept drifting back to Adi's words earlier that morning. She couldn't help think about him. And the next minute, she mentally strengthened herself again. However, that was not her only problem. She realized grudgingly, that Maan was an extremely talented man when it came to work. She was finding it difficult to complete the designs without his guidance and knowledge to help her.

What the hell!! Don't act as if you haven't done designs and projects before he decided to walk into your life.

But, the more she tried, the more she failed. Her team made a good job out of the design, but, somehow, she was not completely satisfied. Reluctantly, they wrapped up a very hectic day of work at about 10pm. She rolled up the huge sheets of paper, intending to send them over to the clients early next morning. As she stepped out of her office, after the whole staff left, she sat back in her car, and sighed loudly. This was the kind of day she liked. Too much work. Work which would be so excruciatingly painful, that it would fail to remind her of other painful moments of her life. And other painful words spoken by people.

She turned on the ignition, and started driving, trying to convince herself to forget everything about him. But, then, she realized that she was driving towards Khurana Constructions, and not her apartment, which was in the exact opposite direction. She tried to stop her feet, tried to stop her car, and the loud voice in her mind. But, she couldn't.

Okay, I'll just go and see whether he has his car there or not. I mean, I'll just check whether he has gone home or not. I swear, I wont even do anything if I find his car there. I'll just turn back and go home, run a hot bath, grab a quick dinner and…

However, her thoughts were broken into when she saw his black Mercedes in the car park. Without a second thought, she grabbed the rolled up designs, and made her way out of the car. As she entered the building, the only light she saw was in the conference room. She ran as quickly as she could towards the light, as if her life depended on it, and stood in front of it for a few seconds, her hand resting on the handle. She tried to hear for any sounds, but there were none. Slowly, very slowly, she opened the door, only to find him standing near the window, staring out.

She stepped into the room, and gently lowered the rolled up sheets on the table. He didn't look back, as if, he hadn't heard anything. Geet walked right behind him, and whispered, " Mk."

He looked back, and Geet expected him to blow her off for coming into his office, and his conference room at this time of the night, without permission. But the only thing he did was sit down on his designated chair at the head of the table, staring down at the table, and slowly said, " Its over, I cant do it."

"Wh.." She started to say, but, then her eyes fell on the table, and for the first time she noticed, that Maan had a whole lot of blueprints open in front on him. And they were not the project they had been working on. They were something else.

" I cant do it Geet. It was so important, but, I failed. I have been trying to figure out how to correct the flaws in this design all day, but I cant. If I am not able to finish it by tonight, the clients will call off the project, and this orphanage will not be built. It was my mother's dream. I couldn't fulfill it. " He held his head in his hands, staring down at the designs intently.

Geet could never justify to herself the thing she did next. She walked up to his chair, and held up his downcast face between her hands, and looked into his eyes.

" Mk, don't panic. Its fine. You can do it."

" No. I have to do the whole design again. Its not possible." He whispered, looking back at her.

" Its possible. It has to be." She said stubbornly, and pulled up a chair next to him. She settled down, and holding the design in her hand, stared at it carefully for the next five minutes.

" Mk, the first two storey are fine. The other eight storey have problems. I'll do four of them you do the other four." She said, still looking at the design, her eyes scrutinized in concentration, her forehead lined with crinkles.

" Geet, its not as easy as it looks. Designing eight storey will take atleast 4 days. I just have a couple of hours in hand." He said exasperatedly.

" That's why you said you had wasted time in the dinner. You could have worked it out, if you didn't come to the dinner. But you did, for me." She muttered almost to herself, feeling a strange sense of remorse and sadness.

She looked at the man sitting in front of her, with his eyes downcast, tensed forehead, and sorrowful face. Suddenly, something snapped in her. She pulled over the necessary stationery, tied up her hair in a ponytail, and started talking.

" Okay, Mk. This is what we are going to do. Its 11 now. We will work for the first two hours on the 1st four storey and the next two hours on the 2nd four storey. I will do the layouts, while you set out the blueprints. We have the whole night to finish it up, and the clients wont be here till atleast 10 o' clock. We can easily work till 6 in the morning." She said, already going over her other plans, almost talking to herself, figuring everything out, closing all loopholes, solving all minute problems, going through all the details preparing to make the project work.

Maan stared at her for a long time. He saw her flawless features compose themselves into strict professionalism and determination. A smile played at the corner of his lips, when he saw how determined Geet was to complete the project which was his dream, his mother's dream. And she would stop at nothing. He had spent all of last night and the remaining morning, trying to solve the problem. And had lost all hope because there was no possible solution. But as soon as Geet entered, and took matters in her hand, it was as if the whole atmosphere was filled with a new sense of hope and aspiration. He realized, that Geet's faith and confidence made him want to work even harder, and for reasons unknown, he felt a strange sensation of warmth when he figured that she was there to help him, support him, guide him. For the first time in life, the idea of working as a team with someone else made him feel thrilled. And suddenly, the problem didn't seem that big anymore. Maan took a deep breath, as he promised himself, that he wont let Geet's trust weaken. That's when he realized, that she had stopped talking and was staring back at him.

Her eyes had a new kind of twinkle in them. Maybe that's what is called positivity, he thought smilingly. She smiled slightly at him, and whispered, " Don't worry Mk. We'll figure this out. Her dream will be fulfilled."

We. He liked the sound of that almost unwillingly. It was like she just joined them together in a different kind of bond, took their relationship to a completely higher level. Wait! What relationship? Maan, focus.. focus on the damn project.. think about Mumma's dream… come one, concentrate.

Geet, kya kar rahi hain? Stop smiling at him like an idiot. Work, do the work, help him out. He's paying because of that stupid dinner. Make it up to him.

Both cleared their throats, and murmured, " We should start"

*****

It was 2am, and both their heads were still bent on the hard wooden table, working minutely on the designs. There were many a time, when they had done the designs together, both helping and advising each other. There was no doubt, that they were the best in business, but somehow, things were even better when they worked together as a team. Just as they finished the 6th storey, Geet leaned back in the chair and groaned out loud.

" This is horrible. Mujhe mere MBA ke din yaad aagaye. God!! Main raat raat bhar jagke notes banati thi, and then, I used to read them the day sorry, night before exams." She said in a exahausted voice, trying to stifle a yawn.

" Don't talk about MBA. The nights I've spent memorizing that stuff. It never actually comes to any use, haina?"He sunk on the soft couch, lowering his head, on the comfy material.

Geet straightened up, and looked at him, her eyes wide with dislike.

" I know, right? And the professors behave as if, that's the end of the world. Main toh lectures mein hangman khelti thi." She giggled, and then added," Aap toh bohut serious student the na? The perfect types?"

He scoffed and then said, " Perfect? I've always spent classes sleeping!!" Geet sprung up on her feet and walked over to the couch. She stood there, staring at him, her hands on her hips and said, " Maan Singh Khurana, you used to SLEEP in class? Tell me all about it!"

She settled down on the couch beside him, and looked at him expectantly. Maan stretched his stiff muscles, and said, " I've even snuck out of classes, playing all kinds of outdoor sports. I was one hell of a student! Reading last minute, and forgetting everything immediately after giving the exam!"

" Me too. God, I used to curse my professors so much. I wanted them to die, or fall down the stairs, or something on the day of the exam." She chuckled, reminiscing the good old days of her college life.

" I did that too, but in a far more meaner way." Maan smirked.

" Now, that's not hard to believe." Geet laughed slightly, and walked up to the table to resume work again. She turned around, and saw Maan dosing off slightly, his eyes heavy with tired sleep. She dropped the pencil on the table, and said, " Okay, why don't we do this? You get an hour sleep, I will do the layouts. I'll wake you up when I'm done."

" No, no, no way.. You don't need to stay up for this. I'm gonna do it." He staggered to his feet, and walked towards the table, when Geet spoke again.

" Mk, you probably haven't slept for 24 hrs. I at least got some sleep last night. I promise you I will wake you up in one hour. And I wont attack you in your sleep." She said, trying to make him comfortable.

" Geet, its my project. You don't need to stay up for this. You shouldn't even be here. You should be home, in bed, sleeping." He trailed off, as it suddenly struck him, that what he just said was true. Geet was not supposed to be in his office, at 2am at night.

He stared hard at her, and tried to recall the time when she came in. He was so worried about the whole project, that he had failed to notice anything. But, now that the project was quite under control, thanks to Geet and her dedication, it suddenly occurred to him, that Geet was doing all this for no apparent reason relevant to her.

He narrowed his eyes, while she looked at him sheepishly, smiling awkwardly.

" Explain yourself, Geet Handa." He finally said, pronouncing every syllable clearly.

PRECAP: Geet, you're still working on this? Its 5am in the morning, for crying out loud.

Hello people! Hows life?😊 My one sucks currently!!😭

Anyway, my Fantasy readers already know this, but I am saying it again for the others. From now onwards, you have to fill up my quota of likes and comments in order to get the next update! So you see, its completely in your hands now.
I am going to be a bit busy for the next few days due to university entrance applications, so I have very kindly decided, that I will give you the next update, when I get 110 likes, and atleast 7 pages of comments for this chapter.😃

Not much, right? Seeing that almost all the chapters get somewhat similar numbers like those!!😉

Anyway, I hope you're liking this story. Updating this is actually tough. I find the storyline very complicated...😆

I love you all

Sarzah
