ALMOST LOVERS
Chapter 8
Anger
He touches you
And I burn
But you touch him,
And I bleed

Past:
"Maan." Geet's voice sounded worried as she looked at him. He had an intense look on his face and the way he was staring at her was making her anxious.
Maan was brought out of his little daydream as he saw the perpetrator of his misery stand in front of him, oblivious to his frustration.
But what a beautiful daydream it had been. It had been so real that even now he could almost feel the imprint of her lips on his.
Geet knew that something was wrong because for the first time she was feeling uncomfortable around Maan. There was an unfamiliar tension in the room, something unknown between the two of them.
Trying to dispel the tension, Geet quickly picked up her bag. "I better head off now. Enjoy your birthday!" But as she was about to walk off, her phone rang effectively stopping her. She smiled as she saw Rehan's name on caller ID.
"Hey Rey"
"Geetu, meet me at the karaoke place in Swans street" Rehan was urging her.
"No way Rehan!" Geet vehemently replied. "You know I go nutters when I have a mike in front of me."
"You have to come, no excuses!" Rehan ordered.
"Fine!" Geet sounded fondly exasperated.
"I love you."
"I love you more! Bye!" Cutting the call off, she turned back towards Maan.
Maan's hands clenched with anger as he saw the soft smile on Geet's face. I want to be the one to bring that look there, not another man.
"Hmmm..So Rehan is your boyfriend?" Maan asked in a nonchalant manner. "Tell me a bit about him."
Geet was surprised by the request because even though they were friendly they never discussed their personal lives. But she wasn't the type to get flustered so she just smiled and talked about Rehan. "Rehan is amazing. I've met so many people, but none like Rehan. He understands me so well that it is almost freaky. He is the mature one, while I am the impulsive one."
"How long have you two been together?"
Geet gave a slight laugh at the question. "It's impossible to say because it wasn't like one day we decided to date, instead we always knew that it we were meant to be. We have never even considered anyone else that way because we have been together nearly our whole lives. I hope that makes sense."
No you aren't meant to be with him, Maan vindictively thought.
"That's..sweet...but doesn't it take the fun away from truly discovering a person." Maan's voice held a bit of a challenge. "I would find it a bit lacking in passion and excitement if you already know everything about the person in a relationship."
"That is arguable because that passion might fade away with time leaving behind a relationship with no other foundation." Geet just smiled as she responded. "Love isn't just passion, it's an inexplicable mix of caring, loyalty and some unknown factor all acting together."
"But how does that differentiate the relationship from friendship and other forms of relationships?" Maan continued to press the point.
"Are you saying that friendship and love are not compatible? Can we not love a friend?" Geet countered. "Why must love be stereotyped into a Hollywood story?"
"I am not saying that but I feel that falling in love with a best friend seems a bit too convenient, almost as if you are avoiding rest of the world and not really testing your feelings." Maan was almost enjoying teasing her but slowly backed off. "However I don't know the details of your relationship and I guess I am not one to judge it."
Geet laughed again. "It's okay I am quite comfortable enough with my relationship to be able to argue about it. I can't help but think of one of Jane Austen's quotes. Seldom, very seldom, does complete truth belong to any human disclosure; seldom can it happen that something is not a little disguised, or a little mistaken. We all have our views and it would be wrong to say that one is wholly correct. Anyways maybe you should meet Rehan. I am sure you'll like him!"
"Sure." It's always good to keep the enemy close.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Present:
Even as Maan's lips worked their magic on Geet, she knew that she had to pull away now before things got out of hand. But she didn't have the luxury to pull away quickly, as there were people all around, as well as media. Instead she slowly untangled from him.
Maan stared at Geet's stormy eyes. As usual he couldn't read them, despite the fact that there was once a time when they were clear as glass.
"What do you want from me?" Every word was flat, lacking any emotions. "Haven't you already done enough? Must you hurt Rehan even more?"
"I want you." He leaned towards her but Geet didn't even react. "And I hate him."
"Me?" Geet's voice was mocking. "But I thought you "had" me. Also I am sure Rehan hates you more than you ever could hate him. After all you are the one who won."
"You know what I mean." His eyes bore in to hers, trying to impart a message. Almost unconsciously his hands trailed up her arms, until they rested on her shoulders.
"Do you want me to be the typical caring, loving and loyal wife?" She retorted sarcastically. "Or do you want me to do the whole obedient wife act?"
"I want you to be the person you once were."
"You mean the one you killed?" Her words challenged him to deny their truth. "Why would you want the old Geet when you are responsible for my change?"
Maan's jaw clenched with supressed anger. Usually Geet would never bring up this topic because it was the open secret of their lives, one that they lived with every day. Yet it seemed today, something had triggered it all to come back to the surface.
He knew that what he had done some would call ruthless and cruel but he had seen no other option. And not for a second would he change his actions.
--------------------------------------------------------
Past:
Geet was getting apprehensive about Maan. They were getting to be really good friends, as they had similar ideas but still Geet was a bit cautious. Something with the way he spoke to her and their interactions didn't sit right with her. The way he looked at her made her think that he was thinking deeply about something, confusing her.
But Geet putted it down to paranoia. After all he was Maan Singh Khurana, not someone of the streets. Yet she did try to pull back a little from him but it was ineffective because of the Dream Home projects. She had to see him nearly every day.
But today was her day off because it was her birthday.
As usual she had been woken up with a call from Rehan in the early hours of the morning and then her parents had barged into her room to wish her.
Her mother, Rano, had made a special breakfast for her of pancakes with strawberries and whipped cream as well as the lightest scones.
"Thank you Mum! Geet hugged her mother. "Everything smells so nice!"
Rano patted her daughter's head fondly. She was so proud of Geet but it worried her sometimes that her daughter was such a straightforward and honest person because even in this generation there were very few people who could appreciate those qualities.
Just then Rishi, one the workers in their house came over with a parcel. "Geet ma'am this came for you."
Geet eyes widened with pleasure, assuming it to be a birthday present. "Hmmm...it must be from one of my friends."
Eagerly she opened the parcel and was shocked to see a jewellery box inside which there was a brilliant necklace of platinum with flawless clear diamonds and an immaculate purple diamond. Geet knew enough to know that purple diamonds of this calibre were ridiculously rare and as a consequence impossibly expensive.
Who would send this for me.
But her question was answered as she saw a note in the box.
Geet,
Best wishes for the day.
It is you that will make this necklace beautiful, not the other way.
Maan.
