ALMOST LOVERS
Chapter 3
Mismatch
The whole world looks at me,
But she is oblivious,
I offer her the sun,
She gazes into the night
"Ah. Mrs Khurana is here." Mrs Sharma said in a snide voice. Even though she was a few years older than Maan, she had been outrageously jealous of Geet when Maan had gotten married, as had most of the women. "Hmm'who was the interesting man you were dancing with?"
Geet was hardly flustered by the comment instead she gave a small smile. "That was Rehan Parekh."
Mrs Sharma prodded further, wanting to create a scandal. "You two certainly looked chummy on the dance floor. I wonder how Maan feels about that."
"Well we should, because we have known each other our whole lives. He is a very, very'dear childhood friend." She explained calmly, making sure that there was a hidden meaning behind each word. She was acutely aware of the man next to her, listening to every word but that motivated her even further.
As usual his mere presence brought out a different side to her, a side that no one else could witness because it was so heavily influenced by him. She was usually a gentle soul but with him she became darker and more complicated. And at this moment she wanted to hurt him. She wanted to remind him of his actions.
Vindictive I may be, but I can never stop this bitterness.
"And darling how do you feel about me dancing with an old'friend?" She gazed up at him, gauging his reaction at her mocking comment.
"Why would I mind?" He responded to her challenge by putting his hand around her shoulder, a clear action to mark his possession. He could feel her stiffen but to the rest of the crowd they would look like the perfect couple. "After all she is my wife and that's all that matters."
She is mine, just as I decided the day we met. And no other man can change that.
Flashback:
Maan was sitting at the bar after a hectic meeting about an aggressive takeover of a petrochemical company. At lease it was hectic and stressful for the other side but not for Maan Singh Khurana who handled with such issues on a regular basis.
Indeed he was rather bored by the lack of challenge. It was almost too easy to watch the opposition spiral downwards until they had no option but to give into him. And then he was ready to pick up the pieces and do as he wished.
That was what made him the most powerful businessman in India and indeed one the strongest ones in the world. No one with even a semblance of intelligence had the audacity to stand up against him, for any attempt was futile.
While Maan appreciated and enjoyed the power it was monotonous to repeat the same thing, almost like a child's game. But despite all that it had become his obsession to attain as much power as possible. Money was not the aim, but the power and aim was in itself the reward.
As Maan sat contemplating all this, a soft feminine body bumped against him, spilling her drink all over his shirt. As he glanced at her, he was met with a confused smile.
"Can't you watch where you are going?" He growled at her while standing up to brush away the drink from his shirt. "Careless and idiotic girl!"
Instead of being offended the girl just stared at him in amazement. She managed to slur out. "Ohhh'.so pretty! So pretty'.pretty pretty boy!!" She even had the temerity to reach out to pat his cheek.
This time Maan was about to explode with rage but before he could say or did anything another voice cut across. "Pinky, what on earth are you doing! Oh no, did she spill her drink on you? I am so sorry!"
Maan took a quick glance at the new girl but that one glance made he look back.
Even though they were in a bar there was something about her that screamed out that she was classy. It might have been the perfectly fitted black dress she wore that managed to make her look beautiful without being to skimpy. Or it might have been the way she carried herself, showing to the world that she belonged somewhere better.
And her face was beyond anything he had ever seen. Individually the features were insignificant but together they created something magical. The sparkle in her hazel eyes, the dent in her cheek and the small mole above her lip all beckoned him to explore her. It wasn't her looks but something within her that shone through the pores of her skin.
Yet Maan pulled himself together, telling himself that she was just another girl and that there were plenty more who were even better looking than her.
"Again I am so sorry." She entreated to him, while managing to balance a swaying Pinky. "She is drunk and had no idea what she was saying." With that she pranced away with Pinky, not even giving a backward glance, leaving a disgruntled Maan.
Maan went back to his drink, trying to focus back on the meeting he had earlier and away from the thoughts of the girl. Maan Singh Khurana wasn't the type to waste time on a woman, he had better things to do.
However again he was disturbed but this time with a gentle tap on the shoulder and turning around he faced the same girl again.
"Hi again. Sorry if I am disturbing you." Her voice was gentle and soft but still filled with confidence.
Oh here we go. She is no different to any other girl. She has probably come to fling herself at me, just like all the other women. Maan thought with a smirk. She is nothing special.
But again she surprised him. "As an apology for my friend, I would like to buy you another shirt to replace the ruined one." She said in a business like tone with no hidden meanings.
Now Maan was used to many things from women; them throwing themselves at him, using their bodies in an attempt to trap him and trying to manipulate him. But rarely did he meet someone like her. From her body language, her attitude and words it was obvious that she saw him as just another guy. Unlike other women, she was not self-conscious around him at all.
"Umm'no need." Maan replied in a gruff voice, unlike his usual self.
She gave a dazzling smile at him, full of dimples and sparkling eyes. "Are you sure?" At his lack of response, she gave a small laugh. "Alright then, thanks for being so understanding." And again she walked away from him.
Geet was smiling at her friends as she walked back to their table. She shook her head in amusement at their antics, especially drunken Pinky who kept mumbling about her pretty boy.
"Geetu'he is so PREETY!! PWEEETTTYYY BOY!" She yelled out, causing Geet to giggle.
"Pinky calm down!" She managed to say between her laughter. She couldn't disagree with Pinky though he had been very handsome, almost perfect. If she had been single he would have definitely been her type she admitted to herself. But the important point was that she wasn't single.
"Come on Geet! You have to admit he is one hot piece of meat." Meera said with a grin. "I wouldn't mind a piece of him."
"Well he is very good looking. I'll give you that'but you know me." She smirked at the girls, who all rolled their eyes because they all knew Geet was immune to most men as she saw herself as taken. Almost like married women, she admired good looking guys but was never interest in them. In fact it had always been like this for Geet because her whole life she had loved one man; Rehan.
Even though there were many men who had shown interest in her, Geet Handa had hardly any time for them, all her time was for her Rehan. There had never been anyone else for her, not even in her thoughts. Everyone in her life had been judged based on him. It didn't matter to her that there were better looking men than Rehan, for in Geet's mind he was perfect for her. All other men were just friends for her and as such she was usually relaxed around them.
As if in sync with her thoughts, her phone started to ring with a call from Rehan but before she could take the call Meera snatched the phone away.
"Geet Handa! For one day you are not going to answer any calls! This day is just for us girls!" Meera demanded.
"But I have to-"
"Nope, no excuses missy!"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Maan had managed to hear only her name but that was all he needed to find out everything about her. After all Maan Singh Khurana could find out anything about anyone anytime, that's how powerful he was.
He didn't know what it was about her but something within him had changed with one sight of her. It was both a revelation and a recognition the moment he had sighted her. Revelation that he couldn't yet decipher but a recognition that nothing could ever be the same.
He stared at her across the room, while she was blissfully unaware. Everything about her stood out for him. The way she sat with her legs closed together, invited him to stare at them. The way her lips had a permanent pout made him want to taste her. The dimpled cheeks beckoned for a touch. Her fingers brushed through her long silky hair, making him want to feel them against his skin.
Everything about her made him want to make her his.
And so began his obsession with Geet Handa.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As Geet felt her husband's arm around her, she just stood there silently.
"Isn't that right Geet." Maan asked even as he held her. "Nothing else matters, except that we are married."
His words weren't a warning but rather a statement that was meant to make her remember their relationship.
And how does one describe our marriage? She thought to herself. Friendship? Enmity? Or a twisted camaraderie?
"Of course." And that wasn't a lie because she couldn't change her past. Everything that had happened couldn't be undone and to a certain extent she didn't want it that way either.
Yes her dreams had shattered with an intensity that she could still within herself. To the whole world theirs had been a love story made in heaven; the tycoon marrying the beautiful heiress. Instead of her fairytale ending of marrying the prince she had ended up with the villain himself. That was the story that no one wanted to hear or believe.
But in the end she had hardly remained the innocent princess.
