Chp. 23 Will time really heal the wounds?
The next day dawned cheerful and bright with new hopes and expectations. Geet got up at the same time as usual, though you could say she hardly slept. The encounter last night, being replayed endless number of times in her mind and the various fears, hopes, expectations and insecurities that came as a package along with it didn't allow Geet much time for sleep. But now it was time for work. She had to push those thoughts out of her mind and concentrate on work. The thought of BR, due to some reason brought the thought of the prince in her mind. She felt guilty. She couldn't believe that she hadn't found any information regarding his wedding functions. She found it strange that even though she was in the palace since past so many days yet she hadn't even caught a glimpse of him. Of course, Gauri had said that the servants never got a chance to see the royalty, but Geet thought that she did have access to BR's room and she was royalty, the prince's mother! Did the prince never come to meet his mother? That couldn't be possible he sure must be visiting her sometime in the day. Geet hadn't seen him was because she was not with BR 24X7. If only she knew when he came to meet her, she would at least be able to get a glimpse of him. How she wished she knew! She went to attend to BR and was pleased to see that BR was delighted to see her. She was bonding with her very well.
Geet was going about her daily routine of feeding breakfast to BR and preparing her medicines when she got another shocker.
"Kunwarji, CR wanted to me-," someone walked into the room and suddenly stopped short.
On the mention of Kunwarji, Geet's heart began thumping. The voice seemed vaguely familiar but she couldn't place it. He seemed to be in a hurry. He didn't find Kunwarji in there, but he walked to BR and greeted her and asked her whether Kunwarji had left, BR nodded. He took his leave and swiftly turned to barely avoid colliding with a girl. "I am sorry, I didn't noti-," he was saying but couldn't complete his sentence as he found himself staring at her open mouthed.
Geet was shocked to see him. It was Adi, the 'forest guy's' friend! Even he was in the palace, looked like this duo always went about together. Moreover, the way he had just walked in didn't look like he was new here. She gulped at this discovery. He was about to say something but then thought better of it, he just gave her a smile and walked away leaving a confused and shocked Geet behind. What else was in store for her, she wondered. The way Adi had been talking, it gave her a feeling that he was very close to the prince. It meant that they would not be going anywhere and it also meant that she could expect another encounter with the forest guy. Part of her felt glad about this and felt like rejoicing whereas part of her didn't like the idea.
Maan' woke up on time, he couldn't sleep much either. He went about his daily routine, all excited. He expected more encounters like last night. Where was Adi, he wondered. He was getting too excited to inform Adi about this. He would definitely be happy and surprised. Maan' was pacing up and down in his room when Adi entered.
"Kunwarji, you won't believe what just happened!" he exclaimed.
"No Adi what I've got to say is more important," Maan' replied.
"Believe me Kunwarji, you'll be shocked to hear what I have to say," Adi replied.
"Adi, you know Geet, the lakeside girl?" asked Maan' ignoring Adi's request.
"You saw her in the palace?" asked Adi surprising Maan'. "Yes! You saw her too? Where?" asked Maan'.
Adi narrated what had just transpired in BR's room and Maan' told him about last night's incident, omitting a few details. Adi couldn't believe his ears. They had been so close last night. Pinky had real bad timing. He needed to talk to her and inform her about these developments and could also find out from her if she knew anything about Geet.
"Hey but what was she doing in mom's room?" queried Maan'.
"No idea, maybe Princess Pinky knows something about it," replied Adi.
"Okay, you go and have a talk with her and I'll go and check out mom's room," said Maan'.
Just then a servant knocked at the door. He had come with CR's message for Maan' she wanted to meet him ASAP. Adi went to have a talk with Pinky and Maan' left to meet CR.
After going around almost the whole palace, Adi finally found her. "Pinky ji," he called out to her, he didn't call her just by her name for fear of being overheard because they were in the corridor.
She spotted him and stopped, "Adi! Where have you been? Haven't seen you in a while."
"Sorry, I have been busy, but there's something interesting that I'd like to share with you," he replied with a twinkle in his eye.
"Not here Adi, let's go someplace else, maybe my quarters," said Pinky sensing what the matter could be.
"Oh really? What is so interesting that Adi, the servant wants to share with Princess Pinakini for which she is shamelessly inviting him to her room?"
Pinky and Adi turned to find Sasha eyeing them with interest.
"Sasha, you've got it all wrong," said Pinky, fear evident in her tone.
"Oh! I always get things wrong, do I?" she taunted.
"Princess Sasha, I am sorry, but it was Kunwar Maan''s message that I had to convey to Princess Pinky," said Adi as respectfully as he could.
"And to do that you had to go to Pinky's room, is it? You couldn't do it here? Pinky do you have the slightest idea what would pitaji say if he ever came to know about this? You have absolutely no shame, being a widow doing such things," she retorted.
Pinky couldn't take it anymore, she ran to her room, tears flowing down her cheeks. Adi stood there boiling with rage, controlling his urge to smack her as she coolly walked away.
Adi was pacing in his room, all frustrated by what had just transpired. How could he have been so careless? How could he forget that Sasha had returned from her little vacation and now things wouldn't be as easy as they had been in her absence? She was back and so were her snide remarks. If he had been slightly careful, then Pinky wouldn't have been insulted in this manner. He slammed his fist in the wall. The pain caused by it was nothing as compared to what Pinky was feeling and what his heart felt at this moment. Why did Sasha have to be so rude? Couldn't she just leave Pinky on her own? If she couldn't do anything to make Pinky's life better then why did she make it worse? Didn't she know that her life was already tough because of the silly customs and traditions that bound her? People said that time healed wounds, but would it really? Not till people like Sasha were around to always dig at them and keep them as fresh as ever.
Sasha was a self-centered and an arrogant person. She cared for very few. Since she was youngest in the family and had been pampered a lot by CR. She was also the prima donna of the family. She and Pinky had gotten along pretty well in their childhood but as they grew up, Sasha had let the step-sister thing to come in and their relationship since then kept on becoming weak and after Ajay's death, Sasha had left no stone unturned in her quest to insult and hurt Pinky. However, she still didn't have the guts to insult her before any of their family members. The only thing good about Sasha as a human being was that IF she ever became friends with anyone then she saw to it that she was good company and never gave them a chance to complain. But for that you had to be rich. You needed to be a royal or belong to the ultra-rich class of the society. She prided herself because she was royalty. She really needed someone patient in her life to bring her to her senses, thought Adi. He wanted to go and check out on Pinky but he had to be patient. He really wished that he had a sister who could be with her and console her on his behalf. He kept struggling with his thoughts, trying to figure out ways and means to find out about Pinky.
