Part 8: Something's Fishy about Devar and Sali

At Pratham's house

Maan: hei Dev what are you doing guys' why are you pasting the shoes with gum?

Dev(1): This is not getting fixed that's why we thought to paste it with the trey.

Don't be confused' it's the evening before the marrieage of Pratham and Gauri. And all the guys are busy with decorating the Tattwa (Shagun). Now in Bengali marriage there is a custom of giving Tattwa it's like shagun. In the day of wedding Tattwa is sent from the groom's house to bride's house which includes, saris, shoe, bag for bride, sari for other relatives, cosmatics, spices, fruits, different kind of sweets, and a Fish which stands for prosperity. Bride side also sends a tatta on the recepsion night with dresses and lots of sweets. No fish this time. But sweet is a must. Bengali custom can't be completed without sweets you know.

Now decorating tattwa is always a big deal. As it must look good. Pratham told them to buy treys of pisboard for it but Samrat and Adi found the thermocol treys of different shapes more beautiful so they bought them to make things difficult only. As thermocols are soft, fragile and for their butterfly shape it became difficult to pack them. Now both Dev were struggling to fix the shoes and rap the trey with selofine paper but failed so they decided to paste them. Thank God Maan saved those poor shoes. But it was becoming a mess. Maan was supervising all the packing but loosing his patience every now and then. Well it was not anyone's fault; the thing was making him crazy.

Maan managed to tie the shoes with the trey and the next moment Samrat splitted glue on the floor.

Maan shouted: Look what you did ..

Samrat: thank God its glue only not the coffee. [Samrat said trying to balance his coffee cup in one hand and snacks in another.

Dev(2): Its ok Maan we will use this gum to paste the fruits ' there are lots of fruits '

Dev couldn't complete his words Maan shouted: usse pehle I will paste you with this gum.. are you nuts ' fruits koi chipkata hai kya?

Adi was making peacock and boat of saris.. it was really beautiful' everybody was adoring them when a devil's foot step followed by Pratham's voice made them aware.

"Angel ' angel stop' don't go there." But angel was not in mood of stopping. He wanted to see what's going on in the room without him. Ok Angel's intro is needed here. Angel is Pratham's pet' a white speech Dog. When Pratham bought it Gauri wanted to named it after Devraj Indra's elephant 'Airabat'.. Pratham was shocked' "emm Gauri Doggy ka nam Sanskrit me dena thik hoga ' isn't it too much." "But see how white he is ' just like Airabat.. That's why I thought." Gauri replied. "Aise keh rahi hai jaise swarg me dekhke ayi hai how that elephant looks like" Pratham murmered in his mind. Gauri couldn't listen him but understood he didn't like that name so she changed her mind, "Ok' Angel.. how's it?" "But he is a male doggie ' how can I call him angel?"

Pratham tried to protest but this time Gauri replied in a serious tone, " Praham you really need to learn more' in Bible Angel's were male only' so its done' he is my darling angel." Pratham had no other way but to accept. But the name didn't suit him. May be it hated its name and to prove that he is not at all an angel he became a rebel. He always used to do the entire devilish thing to irritate others. It's not possible for Angel to read books else anybody would have said Jerome K Jerome's famous dog Montemoroncy is his inspiration.

Angel was in his seventh heaven to see so many colorful things around him. He started smelling everything. He understood these men are conscious of his act so he took some more time to smell it them gave a mischievous looks to everyone, waved his tail and went out. Maan and other guys sighed but Pratham was confused with his act. After two or three minutes when everybody was going back to their work Angel entered the room with bullet speed, before anybody could understand anything he jumped on the bed and attacked the peacock made of sari. "My peacock." Adi shouted. Pratham was ready for this attac as he knew Angel very well' he cought him before he could do any hurm and went out with him. Angel shot an angry glare as if he will take his revenge.

Decoration was done; Mayank was marking the treys and making a menu. There was one trey missing. He checked the menu it was the trey of cocolate. Maan was only there to help Mayank. Mayank said him about the missing trey. At last they found it on the roof with other guys including Pratham .. Almost empty.. before the could ask anything Pratham offered two chocolates, "ye khale or iss trey ko bhul ja' its better that we do a feast on it rather my Father in law have them." Pratham smirked. Maan and Mayank had them with out protesting ' Prathamda is always right they felt.

"umm what about the Rasgullas? Can't we have them?" said Samrat while swallowing a chocolate. Pratham and Maan smirked and Mayank cut the name of Rasgulla from the Tatwa list.

Next Day Morning Gauri's house

Maan and gang went to Bride's house with the tatwa, fish and haldi. Pratham didn't had a lot of relative .. Adi was his only cousin and thus he was very close to Maan and oher guys. Even more than Adi he was close to Maan. So in this occasion it is natural that Maan and his gang was taking all the responsibilities. There were Geet and her girl gang to welcome them. Gauri also doesn't have any sibling. So these girls are Pratham's only darling would be saliya. Maan saw Geet in a yallow salwar suit looking beautiful. He got a mischievous idea.

Maan: ok now we have a custom this fish must be received by any unmarried Sali. So who is gonna take it? [well need not to mention it that there is no such custom]

Geet was busy to admire the boat of sari so she didn't hear it. Others back out and Geet remain in the same place.

Maan: So Geet you are going to recieve it' good' now we have another custom whoever will receive it will cut the fish.

Geet was shocked: what? Nooo' I can't cut a fish

Maan: not a prob.. you can take help of your friends or anyone else but you have to do the primitive work. Ab larke walo ka custom hai you can't deny it.

Maan make her hold the fish. Other guys were having fun. Geet has to do that unwanted job while guys were having sweets and snacks. After doing feast on delicious foods Maan went to kitchen where Geet was struggling with the fish.

Maan: what's up? Kaisa chal raha hai? Machli rani tumhe tang to nahi kar rahi hai na.

Geet shot an angry glare to him. In some previous days Geet's anger on him was fizzing out but it got a new fire. Well she wasn't blaming him as its not his fault if Pratham's family has such stupid custom but still his voice make her angry.

Maan: Geet you know I love this rituals.. they are beautiful.. aren't they? Every rituals has some meaning ..

Geet blabbered in a low voice, " don't know what is the 'meaning' of this ritual.. disgusting."

Maan: umm kuch kaha tumne?

Geet: nahi.. nahito.. waise it seems you know a lot about costumes

Maan: Yaah a lot

geet: then tell me what this ritual signifies?

Maan: wo woo...ummm wo its to check how groom's sister in law can manage this household works.. adhi gharwali ko dekhke gharwali ki gun ka pata lagate hai

cocks and bulls story of Maan infuriated Geet even more. Maan was noticing it and having fun. Geet has become a good friend now but its between Devar and sali... aisa to chaltahi hai he thought. And who doesn't know in India wedding ceremonies comes with the permission of pulling leg and playing prank on each other.

Maan sat on the kitchen cabinet beside Geet and started giving gyan to annoy her more: aree Geet aise nahi... woise karo... re Geet tumhe to ghar ka kam karna bilkul bhi nahi aati.

"am I a daughter of a fisherman... jo machli katna mera ghar ka kaam hoga." Geet spoke in her mind.

Geet: aise keh rahe ho jaise tumhe ye kam bot acci tarike se ati hai.

Maan: hai to' I can cut any fish' mere bohot sare cousins hai or sabki salio ko sikhaya hai

Geet: to kya tumhare sare cousins ke ghar me aisa custome hai?

Maan: Nahi bass jin jin cousins ki khoobsurat saliya hai ye custome bass unn logo ke liye hai.

Maan went out laughing. Geet needed some time to understand the matter and she got it.

Geet: that means there is no such ritual ' Maan made me fool. Oh so wedding wali prank khelna start ho gaya hai' Ok then Mr. Maan Singh Khurana get ready to get a warm welcome on wedding night.

"I will be ready for it." Geet turned listening Maan's voice, she didn't understand when he came again and stood behind.

Geet: so the fight between bride side and bride groom side begins from now.

Maan: Ailane jung huh...hume manzoor hai.

Sorry for late... its nothing new for me but me is really very stressed n disturbed from some days... can't concentrate in writing ... MRITYUNJAI readers have to wait a lil coz can't write that story without giving full concentration ... n for the short update... I wanted to put the whole marriage ceremony in one update... but then ye Hanuman ji ki tail jaisi lambi ho jati😆 ... so in this update there was only pre-wedding masti... wait for a Big Fat Bengali Wedding n lots of Marriage Masti😉
