Part 46

When he asked her what they should order for dinner from room service, Riddhima suggested "Why not go to the restaurant only?" Though Armaan was surprised at her suggestion, he didn't show it but only said "fine, as you wish." But when she said "Just a minute, let me change" he was taken aback, but just nodded and started straightening his clothes.

A few minutes later she stood before him in a bright blue chiffon saree, her hair neatly combed but left open and her pallu swaying in her arms. Armaan couldn't believe his eyes. Yesterday she had been upset with Suja for packing her chiffon sarees and today she was flaunting it. But he wasn't complaining. Why would he, when he had the company of such a beautiful lady for dinner?

He smiled at her and slipping his arms through hers, walked to the elevator. Riddhima was feeling on the top of the world but couldn't understand why. She was clinging to his arms, her cheeks rubbing against them and felt a thrill in doing so. It was so unlike her, but even she herself couldn't understand the dictates of her heart.

As he sat opposite her at the table, he only watched her peer into the menu card. When she looked up having decided what she wanted, she caught him staring at her. And when she tapped his arm lying on the table, he was startled. That made her giggle and him blush. She naughtily raised her eyebrows in question and he too cheekily replied "I think I'll skip dinner tonight, as I'm not in the least hungry for food now."

When she glared at him with pretence anger, he went on "My eyes are feasting, so it's ok." He got one more rap on his arm for that. "Enough of your wisecrack. Come on, order your dinner" she said, seeing the waiter approach them. When she finished ordering, Armaan simply said "Make that two" without even paying attention to what she had said. Both Riddhima and the waiter looked at him strangely. Then the waiter said "sir, maam has order for 1 by 2 vegetable soup. You want to double that?"

Armaan laughed at his own stupidity and said "No, no, I'm sorry. Get maam's order only." When the waiter left the table he looked at her with a pout and said "It's all because of you, I'm making a fool of myself."

R: What did I do now?

"Your changed looks and behavior has numbed my brain. I can't think straight" he said, winking at her.

R: The makeover was your idea only. Why blame me now?

A: the only remedy is that we get done with this dinner and get back to our room as soon as possible.

Now it was her turn to blush and she voiced her protest with a single word "athaan."

While they were still in the midst of their 'nauk jaunk' their soup arrived. They finished that, and their remaining dinner also, in the same mood of teasing and giggling. They seemed to have got high even without any alcohol.

As they walked out of the restaurant, Riddhima was walking quietly beside him, anticipating what was in store, once they reached their room. Armaan pulled her arm through his and seeing her blushing just raised his eyebrows in question, though he could very well guess what she must be thinking about. She just shook her head and they returned to their room.

As soon as they entered in, she immediately picked her phone and called Suja. He sat beside her on the sofa and kept staring at her, just to tease her. When she felt too uncomfortable and silently mouthed "tch, What are doing?" he just shrugged his shoulders and said in the same way "What am I doing? I'm just sitting here. Not even touching you."

Suja gauged that something was amiss because her mother wasn't replying to her questions properly. So she quietly cut the call and Riddhima wasn't even aware of it as she was engrossed in deciphering what her athaan was saying in his silent language. And when she realized Suja had cut the line she once again accused him saying "See, because of you, I didn't even realize that Suja has cut the call. What will she think now?"

"She won't think, she'll know that you are busy otherwise." He retorted trapping her in his arms. "Athaan at least let me bid her good-night" she pleaded, but it fell on deaf ears. He simply switched off her phone and his too. When she tried to tell him not to do so, he simply pressed his lips on her to stop her from talking. Soon there was no need for words only action. Both of them were however unaware of how and when they moved on to the bed and their clothes fell on the floor.

Riddhima and Armaan returned from Kodaikanal as totally different people. As Suja was in her last month of pregnancy, they went to meet her, instead of them coming over. Riddhima was happy to see that the new cook, Saroja, was a great help. She did all the work very efficiently.

But the greatest surprise they had that weekend, was Karan's call. He had called on Riddhima's cell and spoke to his Perima first. When he enquired about her health she told him that she was very fine. He was very glad to hear her so vibrant and joyous and said so. Riddhima lost no time in giving the full credit of it to her athaan and the Kodaikanal trip that he had taken her to.

When she enquired about Linda, he told her about the usual problems of backache and tiredness and then said that he had called to give her one special news, which they themselves had come to know only the previous day. When Riddhima eagerly asked what it was, he told her that she was going to have a grand-daughter. Riddhima wasn't able to understand how he knew that. So he had to explain to her that in the US if the parents wished to know the sex of the child the doctors would tell them by the fifth month.

Riddhima was very much excited and spoke at length to Karan and also to Linda. Then Karan asked her to give the phone to his father. By then, hearing one side of the conversation itself, everyone had understood that Linda was going to have a baby girl. Seeing Armaan speaking happily with his son brought tears to Riddhima's eyes. She was glad that Karan had understood his father, now that he was himself going to be one.

After their talk with Karan, Riddhima prophesied "Suja will have a boy only." When all of them questioned how she could be so confident she explained that it was an old belief that when the daughter and daughter-in-law of a family were pregnant, they usually got children of the opposite sex. The thought which came to everyone's mind then, was that Karan and Suja were not actual siblings. But none of them voiced it, as they didn't want to dampen Riddhima's spirit.

As they sat chatting that evening, Riddhima remarked very sadly, "the daughter-in-law of our family is going to have a baby and we can't even have a Valaikaapu, Seemandham (Godh bharai) for her."

S: what can we do amma, if they were somewhere in India you could have gone and done everything for her, but

P: Suja you are forgetting that she's an American, she may like all this even if we could go and do it for her.

R: From what I know of her, Linda loves Indian culture and would not mind going through the ceremonies.

A: If you really want it so much, it could be done.

Riddhima looked at him with knitted brows wondering what he meant.

A: I have to go to the US to attend to certain things. I left everything abruptly and came here. My friends have been helpful and have been taking care of things for me there. We could apply for a visiting visa for you and you could come with me.

S: That's an excellent idea amma,

R: What nonsense how can I go?

A: Why not? What's stopping you?

R: What about my check-ups. Remember the doctor said, for 6 months regular follow-up is necessary. And the school?

A: When we go for your next check-up, we'll take the doctor's approval for you to travel. Then we'll apply for the visa. If the school's been running quite smoothly in your absence, it can continue likewise.

S: Right. Anyways Valaikaapu, Seemandham is done in the eighth month only na?

A: Oh, that means after three months only. That's enough time to make all the arrangements.

R: Come on be serious. Tickets to US must be so costly. You've just spent so much for our operation.

A: How many times should I tell you, don't break your head over money matters. Leave it to me.

P: Athai, people will be willing to do anything to get a chance to go to the US and here mama is ready to take you and you are hesitating.

S: Yes amma, you should surely go if the doctor permits. It's a wonderful opportunity.

Then turning to Armaan she asked "Appa how much will the ticket etc come up to?"

A: Return ticket should be around 50 – 60 thousand and visa fees around 5 thousand I think.

S: Amma surely you can afford that.

That got Riddhima thinking. "Ok first let's see if the doctor permits" she said.

They returned home on Sunday evening as Riddhima was to start going to school from Monday. Armaan requested her to start with just a few hours in the morning. During that time he would meet with the people concerned and start with his hospital construction.

One morning while they were sitting and having their breakfast, Armaan said "Riddhima I'm thinking of buying a car." When she looked up surprised he said "It's difficult and expensive hiring a cab to go about. I have to go to different places in connection with the hospital work. Moreover it'll be helpful with the kids also."

R: Are you planning to buy a second-hand one?

A: Let me see, I thought of talking to Prakash about it.

R: Yes, he's the right person and he'll even help you get the loan for it.

Armaan and Riddhima had moved to Suja's house a fortnight before her due date in their brand new car. Prakash advised Armaan to go in for new one as a used one may give less mileage and more problems. He even got him a loan from his bank. Armaan had a slight problem as he was used to the left hand drive in the US. So every evening he took Priyam, Suja and Riddhima for a drive, to get used to the right hand drive.

Since they wouldn't be able to go to Chennai once Suja delivered, they spoke to Riddhima's doctor on the phone, for permission to travel to the US. He said if she continued progressing as well as she was, there wouldn't be a problem for her to travel in three months. But he insisted that she to come for her check-up the following week itself if it wasn't possible to come the week after that.

Armaan took an online visa appointment also for the day after the check-up. Riddhima was not happy about leaving Suja alone for two days, but Saroja agreed to stay with Suja during the day time till Prakash got home. So they went in their car itself to Chennai. Riddhima was proudly sitting next to her athaan in the front seat.

The doctor was absolutely pleased with Riddhima's progress and her perfect sugar management. When they had returned from Kodaikanal her sugar had gone slightly up, but Armaan's constant monitoring had brought it within limits in no time. Armaan had made an appointment with the gynac also and requested for a female one, as he knew Riddhima would feel awkward talking such things to a male doctor.

The doctor checked her up and enquired about her cycle. When Riddhima informed the doctor that she had got her periods after a long time after their return from the trip, she said she might start getting it regularly too. Armaan thought it only appropriate to inform the doctor that they had consummated their marriage only during the mentioned trip. If she was surprised she didn't show it but Armaan explained to her of his being away in the US all these years.

When they enquired about Riddhima being able to mother a baby, she was very vague about it saying it wasn't advisable for the time being. Riddhima also felt they shouldn't press her for more information now. Having waited for so many years, she could wait a little longer. She would definitely be dejected if she couldn't conceive, but that was for God to decide. He knew what she deserved. Because even though Man Proposes it's God who disposes.

Beautiful update ...very glad to see Ridhima so happy...hope she can have a baby too..I believe that man proposes and God disposes but in this case Ridhima proposes and lets see if Shardha disposes ...pl continue soon and thanks for the pm !!!

The part was nice. It's good to see ridhima also change so much and for better. Arman really made a fool of himself in the restaurant 😆
they are planning to go to US. It'll be good if she can meet both the sons there.
Hope they don't get disappointed if not able to have a baby... Keeping the finger crossed for them..
