Part 32

When Armaan slowly came out of his sedated sleep, he was surprised to see Balu uncle sitting beside him, holding his hand. Seeing him open his eyes, uncle moved closer and touching his shoulder asked him "How are you my son?"

A: I'm, I'm ok. But Chitappa, you here?

Pretending to be angry and pushing back his chair uncle said, "Don't call me chitappa. You only keep saying, that I'm in your father's place. If your appa had been alive today, would you have taken this step without consulting him? Chitappa can never be equal to appa, I know."

A: pleeaaase chitappa,

"Thatha he can't talk much. You can take him to task later when he's better. As of now, he only needs you good wishes and blessings." Prakash intervened. Nodding his head Balu uncle once again pulled his chair closer to the bed and running his hand on his nephew's head said "But I'm very proud. I've always thought my daughter is the most magnanimous person. No other woman would willingly do what she did for you. But now you've paid her back for everything by giving her a new life. I can very well understand why you didn't consult any of the family members. Surely none of us would have consented as we wouldn't have wanted to put two lives at risk. Why even Riddhima herself would never have agreed."

"Exactly," Armaan said in one word.

B: That's ok, but why did you have to go to such a hospital where there were no facilities whatsoever? You could have remained in this hospital only, without letting these people know. If they came to know after the surgery what could they do but take care of you? At least you'd have been saved of all this pain.

"I was only worried that no one should know, so couldn't think clearly." Armaan explained in as few words as possible. Balu uncle turned towards Prakash and asked "What are the doctors saying?"

P: Mama's condition is improving. He has started responding to the treatment, but it may take a few days for him to come to normal.

Having spent the whole day with both, his nephew and niece, when uncle prepared to return to the village, Prakash approached his athai with the suggestion of sending Suja and Priyam back with him.

R: that's a very brilliant idea Mapillai. I was myself very much worried that she was straining herself too much and poor thing, Priyam is also getting bored here. How much will that child draw and colour the whole day long?

When Prakash spoke about that to Armaan, he also felt she shouldn't strain herself so much in her present condition and agreed with Prakash's decision. So that evening Suja and Priyam, left with thatha.

Before leaving, Suja asked her husband to promise that he would bring her amma and appa, back to the village, as a couple. Prakash promised her that he would provided, she promised to take care of herself and their daughter in his absence. Prakash then phoned their neighbour whom they were very friendly with and asked them to keep a watch on his wife and kid as they would be alone there. The lady said she would go and sleep at their house every night till he came and that he shouldn't worry on that score. Prakash thanked her and thought it's at times like this that friendly neighbours are needed.

Prakash sat with uncle for a long time as he was still quite weak. Riddhima had been given medications and was already asleep. The next morning he woke up and went to athai's room to see if she was awake. But her bed was empty. On enquiring with the staff he was told that she was taken for some blood tests which had to be done on empty stomach. Actually the doctor had said that they could start with light liquid diet that day. He had said that they should first give her a few sips of water and if she didn't throw up it could be followed by a little tea or coffee.

The blood tests showed that certain blood levels were not within normal limits, so the doctors had to increase the doseage of the immune suppressants that they were giving her, to prevent organ rejection. The increased doseage of course resulted in certain adverse side effects. She was having fever, chills and flu like symptoms. The doctors of course said that it was common and she would be fine once the body got used to the doseage.

As she felt very weak, Riddhima needed help for all her activities. Of course the nurses were very cooperative, but at times they were busy and she had to wait. Prakash tried his best to help her in any way he could, but Riddhima found it very awkward, though he kept reminding her that he was like her son. It was at such times that Prakash felt perhaps he shouldn't have been so hasty in sending Suja back. But he didn't mention any of this to his wife or else he knew she'd have rushed back. Whenever she called, if athai was ok, he'd make her talk or else he'd say she was sleeping because of the medicines.

In the following days, both the patients were obediently following the doctors' instructions, motivated by the fact that they could be together once they got over this phase. Armaan's infection was well under control now but Riddhima's progress was very gradual.

One morning, after he was given a sponge bath, the nurse requested Armaan to take a small walk. "You've been walking inside this room since 2 days, so today you can try walking outside on the corridor, with your son's help." she said.

A: Can I visit my wife?

N: Of course! Why not?

A: I do not know which room she's in.

N: She's in the second room to the right. Room no. 210.

Prakash had gone to have bath and then he'd go to the canteen for breakfast. Armaan knew he'd be gone for at least half an hour. He wanted to see Riddhima but Prakash wasn't taking him to her room because she was still very susceptible to infections. Though the doctor has said that Armaan was free from the infection now, Prakash didn't want to take any chances. So he had asked Armaan to be patient for a day or two more.

But Armaan had a suspicion that everything wasn't fine with his Riddhima, though the doctors and nurses whom he questioned kept telling him the same thing that Prakash said, "She was recovering as well as could be expected." Then why was Prakash in her room most of the time, though he did check on Armaan from time to time? So Armaan had decided to go to her room and see for himself, how she was. He wouldn't go very close to her or touch her, he decided. So there would be no chance of him passing on the infection to her.

When Armaan entered her room, he saw that Riddhima was asleep. He moved close enough to have a good look at her. She was looking very pale. Unknowingly tears came to his eyes and he couldn't help the sniff that followed. Hearing that, Riddhima opened her eyes. Seeing him she rubbed her eyes to make sure she wasn't hallucinating. Having made sure that he was there in person she said, "Why are you standing there? Come here athaan." She said pointing to the chair beside her bed. He didn't move forward but asked her "How are you Riddhima? I can't come closer because I don't want to transmit the infection to you. But I had to see for myself that you are ok. That's why I came."

Without replying him, Riddhima held on to the cot and slowly sat up. When she pushed the sheet away and tried to put her foot on the floor, Armaan rushed to her and holding her shoulder said "Don't step down please. Keep lying down." "If Mohammed can't come to the well, the well has to come to Mohammed" she said smiling teasingly at him. He just shook his head and smiled at her while she pulled him by the hand and made him sit next to her on the bed.

A: Riddhima please understand,

"Why don't you understand?" she asked leaning towards him, putting her head on his shoulder and hugging him by the waist. Then he couldn't resist hugging her. Kissing her temple he asked "Are you allowed to sit up? Have the stitches healed? I heard Suja and Prakash talking about some redness around the suture. They thought I was asleep you know."

R: everything has healed well and yesterday I walked around the room with the nurse's help. The doctor says the more I walk the better the stitches will heal. But first of all I want to thank you for giving me a new life.

She put her other arm also around him and gave him a squeeze saying "But I feel you shouldn't have taken such a big risk."

A: There's no risk whatsoever in this. Didn't Dr. Sudha say so the very first time she spoke to us about the transplant?

R: When did you decide to yourself donate the kidney?

A: Almost as soon as Dr. Sudha spoke about a living donor. And why are you thanking me? It's nothing compared to all that you did for me, Karuna and the boys.

R: Ok so that makes us even.

A: Yes. By the way did Prakash tell you Karan got married on Sunday.

R: What? Are you serious?

A: He was into a relationship with a girl named Linda for the last 3 ' 4 years. He called on Wednesday, when I was very ill. Prakash took the call. Prakash has told him about your surgery. Prakash was saying that he was nearly in tears hearing about it and asked if you still remembered him.

R: What did Prakash tell him? Why didn't he tell me about it?

A: Prakash told him that you surely remembered him.

R: Did he go ahead with the wedding after knowing about your condition also?

Armaan laughed sarcastically and said "You know, he asked Prakash to inform me about his wedding plans as he was busy with the preparations and didn't have time to call again."

R: Did you talk to him later and convey your blessings?

A: Shouldn't he be the one to be calling me to enquire about my health?

R: Yes, he should have, but if he didn't there's no reason why you shouldn't.

A: Ok forget that, let's talk about our future instead.

"Don't forget our children only are our future." She said as she moved away from him and asked him to pass her the bag at the far end of the bed. When he gave it to her, she took out a magazine from it and searching through it, opened it and said "read this." He took the magazine from her and read.

This is dedicated to all parents out there...

Pencil: I'm sorry...

Eraser: For what? You didn't do anything wrong.

Pencil: I'm sorry cos you get hurt bcos of me. Whenever I made a mistake, you're always there to erase it. But as you make my mistakes vanish, you lose a part of yourself. You get smaller and smaller each time.

Eraser: That's true. But I don't really mind. You see, I was made to do this. I was made to help you whenever you do something wrong. Even though one day, I know I'll be gone and you'll replace me with a new one, I'm actually happy with my job. So please, stop worrying. I hate seeing you sad. :)

Parents are like the eraser whereas their children are the pencil. They're always there for their children, cleaning up their mistakes. Sometimes along the way... they get hurt, and become smaller (older, and eventually pass on). Though their children will eventually find someone new (spouse), but parents are still happy with what they do for their children, and will always hate seeing their precious ones worrying, or sad.

R: So very true na?

Armaan just stared at her spell bound.
