When Armaan dashed into the room, Riddhima was as usual sitting with her prayer books in her hands. He just went and hugged her. Seeing her rather shaken up by his action, he said, "Good news. The donor's match is fine and the operation has been scheduled for Tuesday morning."
R: What? Really? Tuesday? That my Ganapati's day. Now I'm confident everything will go on very smoothly.
Then turning towards Armaan she requested, "Athaan I want to meet the donor please."
A: Sure, why not? But he doesn't live in Chennai. Now he'll be coming for the operation only. You can meet him then.
R:Ok, at least let me thank him on the phone.
Armaan dialed the number and after sometime said "it says it's out of reach. We'll call later. Call Suja first and tell her."
R: Yes, of course!
When Riddhima called her daughter and gave her the news, she was extremely happy and said "You are really lucky amma, to have found a donor so quickly." "It's all due to athaan's efforts. He arranged everything at the snap of a finger." Her mother replied proudly at the same time beaming at Armaan who was standing in front of her.
S: Amma, we'll be there on Monday evening itself. Don't worry. Have you fully recovered from the dialysis you had yesterday?
R: Yes, I'm fine now. The drowsiness was only for a few hours.
The previous day when Suja had called to enquire how her mother felt after the second dialysis, Armaan had picked the phone and said that Riddhima was sleeping, because she wasn't in a condition to talk. And if Suja knew that she was vomitting, she would become worried. Of course, Riddhima had called and spoken to her later, when she felt better.
S: Will you be having any more dialysis then?
"I don't know. You better ask athaan" she said handing him the phone. He was also not very sure but "maybe just one or two," he guessed. After enquiring about Priyam and Prakash, he handed back the phone to Riddhima.
S: And how are you passing your time there? It must be difficult for you, having been so busy all along. But it's a good rest for you.
Riddhima told her how Armaan had got the prayer books for her.
S: Oh so you are getting royal treatment there I can see. No wonder you both were so eager to send us back.
"Suja" Riddhima scolded her. "Amma I was just pulling your leg," was her reply. Riddhima smiled and asked for Priyam. But she was having her nap. So she cut the call.
"She looks so happy whenever she speaks to her daughter," Armaan thought to himself standing near the window. Then going up to Riddhima he asked "would you like to go for a small walk? There's a Ganesha temple in the hospital premises itself. We could visit it."
"Of course, why not?" she replied eagerly. Then she asked him "can I change into a saree? I don't want to go to the temple in this gown." He nodded and went out of the room. When she came out a few minutes later she was looking brighter. They walked to the temple a few blocks away. They sat there for a few minutes and then walked back through a longer route, as the doctor always recommended that she needed to walk for sometime every day.
After that, days seemed to pass quite quickly. Riddhima had only one dialysis before the operation and that too wasn't so bad either. They walked everyday to the temple once in the morning and once in the evening. Even Armaan who didn't believe in going to temples etc. regularly, found it very comforting. Riddhima became more and more confident about the surgery, as days passed.
Suja and Prakash were there by Monday evening, as promised. That evening all of them visited the temple together and had a pooja performed on Riddhima's name. When they returned to the ward, Armaan took leave of them saying that the donor couldn't make it to Apollo hospital, so he had arranged for his surgery at another hospital, closer to his house and that he would have to with him for a couple of days as he had no one else to take care of him.
R: What is this athaan? After doing so much you are not going to be here during the surgery?
A: Please Riddhima, understand. He has been so accommodative, that's the least I can do for him. I'll be in touch with you all on the phone, don't worry.
P: Who will bring the kidney from that hospital to this? Hasn't that got to be done immediately?
A: Yes, that hospital will send it with someone, immediately after the operation, with the required precautions.
P: Which hospital is it? If need be I can go there. You stay here.
A: No, no I promised him I'll be there with him till he can go home, I can't go back on my word.
Then turning to Prakash he said, "I've reserved a room for you at the hotel as they may not allow all of you to stay here at night." After that, he went to Riddhima and holding her hand he said, "My best wishes and prayers are always with you. Don't worry. Everything will go on smoothly." She just nodded and said "Thanks for everything athaan." He just patted her head and walked out from there.
Suja: Who is this donor amma?
R: I don't know, I've never met him. Actually, after getting the match results, I wanted to thank him personally, but that was not possible. We tried to call him several times but never managed to get through.
P: Who is he? What's his name? Why did he agree for the donation?
R: Actually I don't know anything. This dialysis was making me so sick, I didn't bother about anything. Athaan was only doing all the running about.
S: Even when I asked him on the phone, he said he would tell me everything in person. Now he has gone without telling us anything.
P: We'll ask him the details when he calls and go and thank the donor personally.
After Riddhima was served a light meal, the others went to the canteen and had their meal. Then Prakash and Priyam, bid Suja and Riddhima goodbye and left for the hotel. They said they would here the next morning, before Riddhima was wheeled into the OT at 9 am.
Suja requested her amma to go to bed early and she also lay down on hers. But sleep didn't come easily to either of them. Both were worried but didn't express it to one another.
The next morning they were woken up at 6 am as usual. Riddhima wasn't supposed to eat or drink anything. But she forced Suja to go to the canteen and have something to eat, saying that she would go in for the operation till then. By 8 o'clock Priyam and Prakash arrived. Soon the nurses came to prepare Riddhima for the OT.
She held the photo of her favourite Lord Ganesha, which she had carried along with her from home, in her hand. But no one knew that it also had the photo of the most important person of her life, hidden within. She requested the nurses not to separate it from her, throughout the surgery. Suja, Prakash and Priyam walked with her upto the OT door and wished her luck. She gave Suja's hand a squeeze before the door closed. That brought tears to Suja's eyes. She sat on the chair outside the OT praying in her mind. Prakash came and sat beside her with Priyam on his lap. Putting his arm around her shoulder he said, "Don't worry, she'll be fine."
An hour passed. When a nurse came out of the OT, Suja ran to her and asked "Sister is the operation over?" The nurse smiled and said "Not so soon. We still haven't even got the donor kidney," and went away. Prakash went to enquire at the reception why the donor kidney hadn't come still. "It's on the way," he was informed. When he asked from which hospital it was coming, they said they couldn't reveal it as the donor had asked them not to.
Disappointed he turned around to return to his seat outside the OT, when he heard a man say "Sir I've brought the kidney from Alphonso Hospital." Prakash hid behind a pillar to watch what followed. The man at the reception requested the visitor to wait and taking the box from him proceeded to the OT. He came out after a few minutes and told the visitor that everything was in order and handed him a paper.
As the man from Alphonso hospital left, Prakash followed him. When he was outside the hospital gates, he went up to him and asked him "Sir can you please tell me where is Alphonso Hospital?" "I'm going there, come with me." The man replied but Prakash told him that he was waiting for someone. So the man guided him as to which bus he could take and said that it was just 5 kilometers or so away. Prakash was surprised and perplexed by what he had just learnt.
Right then his cell ran. It was Suja. "Where are you?" she yelled when he picked the call. "I'm getting nervous sitting here all alone."
P: Ok, ok calm down, I'm just outside. I'll be there in a minute.
As he walked to the OT, he decided not to tell Suja anything now. She was already too tensed about her amma. On the way he picked a cup of coffee for her and a chocolate for Priyam, from a vendor outside the hospital gate. "I just felt like a cuppa, so I went out" he said handing her the cup and the chocolate to Priyam.
S: At least you should have told me and gone.
"Actually I was just walking in the corridor and walked out. I'm sorry I got you worried." He apologized.
After about 4 hours Riddhima was wheeled out of the OT and into the recovery room. The doctor informed them that the operation had been ok, but they'd have to watch and pray that there's no rejection. He said she'd be wheeled into the ward after a few hours, once she regained consciousness.
Seeing Suja quite tired, Prakash suggested they go to the canteen and have lunch and then wait in the ward for athai to be brought. When they came back after lunch, they enquired with the nurse as to Riddhima's condition. She informed them that it was satisfactory. Suja was feeling very drowsy, so went to the ward and lay down to sleep and Priyam also joined her. Prakash told her that he had some official work in Chennai. He was going to meet someone and would be back soon.
Suja was woken up by the sound of people talking. When she opened her eyes she saw that Riddhima was brought back to the ward. The ward boys and nurses gently shifted her to the bed. She was conscious but still drowsy. She smiled seeing her daughter and granddaughter. When she seemed to searching for someone else, Suja informed her "Armaan uncle isn't back yet and Prakash has also gone to meet someone." Riddhima nodded and closed her eyes.
Suja called her husband to find out where he was. She told him that amma had been brought to the ward and asked why he was taking so long. He said that he was held up in the traffic and would be there soon. As he got up wiping his tears, the man opposite him said, "Remember your promise."
