Hi friends,
WISH YOU ALL A VERY HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS DIWALI !
As I was busy with the Diwali preparations I didn't get enough time to write. But since many of you were eager for the next part, I'm posting whatever was ready, though it is somewhat short.
Part 26
Mother and daughter sat chatting for a long time after the others had left. Riddhima told Suja about her visit to the orphanage and Mr. Raman's house. That took them on a nostalgic path. When Suja spoke of what might have been her state if Riddhima hadn't adopted her, Riddhima told her how the other children who grew up in the orphanage had also settled well in life inspite of not being adopted by any family. "But they wouldn't have got the unconditional love of a mother, as I did." Suja pointed out, hugging her mother.
They had been chatting till the night-nurse came and requested them to switch off the lights and go to bed as they would be woken up early in the morning, as per the hospital practice. If they didn't wake up at the stipulated time, the bed sheets wouldn't be changed and they wouldn't be able to get hot water for bathing, she warned them. So mother and daughter went to sleep after that.
Riddhima had woken up twice during the night to use the restroom and that too was a big process because the urine had to be collected and poured into a measuring jar kept there. She was told that the aaya would come in the morning to make a note of the amount of urine, before disposing it.
At the hotel Armaan woke up early. He hadn't been able to sleep well. He had been very restless thinking of Riddhima's condition. He had to go to the hospital immediately. He went into Prakash's room to inform him, but found father and daughter still asleep. He had his bath and left for the hospital. He went straight to the night-nurse and enquired about Dr. Sudha. He was told that she would come by 10 o'clock. Disappointed with the information he headed to Riddhima's ward.
Riddhima had already bathed and changed. Had had a cup of sugarless coffee and was reading the newspaper. Suja was still asleep. Riddhima told him in whispers that she had woken up earlier and had a sip of coffee and became sick. So she had gone back to bed. "I didn't want her to stay back here in the first place. But she might have felt bad if I'd said so. Hence I didn't object. From tonight onwards I'll only stay here." Armaan whispered back.
R: Why did you come so early? Did you have coffee and breakfast?
A: Actually I wanted to meet Dr. Sudha, so I came early. But she'll come only at 10 it seems.
Hearing their voices Suja woke up. How are you feeling Armaan asked her?
S: I'm ok uncle.
A: Come I'll get you some breakfast in the canteen.
S: No, uncle not so early. I'll have something later.
A: Ok then, come I'll take you to the hotel. You can rest for a while there and also have your bath, breakfast etc.
When she tried to protest saying she would stay with her amma, he refused point blank saying he was there now, so she should go and come later.
"I'll drop her and come" he informed Riddhima. When Suja said she could manage on her own, he paid a deaf ear to it. When they went outside, he saw a cab and hailed it. He hired it for the whole day so that the family could visit the hospital as and when they pleased.
When he took Suja to their room, Prakash had woken up. "I was just about to call you," he said to Armaan.
A: I went early to the hospital to meet Dr. Sudha. But she hasn't come still. I'll go now and send back the taxi. I've hired it for the whole day. Take your time, freshen up, have breakfast and then come to the hospital. No hurry.
It was almost midday when Prakash and his family came there. Armaan met them on the ground floor itself. He had spoken to Dr. Sudha and arranged for screening the donor that day itself. They were all very pleased and enquired about the donor. He didn't reveal anything except saying "Don't worry leave that to me. I'll take of that."
They went to Riddhima's room and he conveyed the good news about having found a living donor, to her too. When she enquired how he had managed to find someone so soon, he asked her not to bother about all that but make herself strong for the operation. They all sat talking when the nurse came and called Armaan saying that Dr. Sudha wanted to meet him. Another nurse came and wheeled Riddhima away for some tests.
Armaan was told that he would be informed about the match in a couple of days and after that the operation would be scheduled. He was told that even if there was a match, the operation would be performed only the following week. When Armaan conveyed this news to the others, Riddhima coaxed Prakash to take his family back that very afternoon so that they didn't have to waste their leave. She told them to come after the operation only to see her. But Suja said she would be back on the day of the operation.
After Suja and Prakash left, Armaan vacated the hotel room and got all their things to the hospital. He was with her the whole day now, except when he was called by Dr. Sudha, which was quite often. How many people was he getting screened she wondered. But he wouldn't reveal anything even if she asked.
She had had her second dialysis the following day and felt very sick after it. Armaan had been beside her all the time then. When she unexpectedly began to throw up he couldn't find anything to hold her vomit. But he didn't hesitate to put his hand forward for it. As Riddhima couldn't control it she threw up in his hand. Then he ran to wash his hand and get some water for her to gargle and a mug for her to spit into.
He cleaned her face and rang for the nurse. He requested her to kindly change the sheet and also get a fresh gown for Riddhima, as the one she was wearing had been soiled. The nurse got the gown and bed sheet as requested by them, but said she didn't have time to change it. They'd have to do it themselves. Armaan first helped Riddhima change the gown not paying heed to her protests. Then lifting her off the bed took and seated her on the sofa. Then went ahead and changed the bed sheet.
When he went to bring her back to the bed, he noticed tears running down Riddhima's cheeks and asked, "What's the problem Riddhima? Why are you crying?" She just shook her head and said "I'm very sorry."
A: Sorry for what? You are unwell. What happened wasn't something you could help. Don't think so much about it.
"But making you dirty like this" she said pointing towards the wet patch on his shirt. Her sobbing wouldn't let her continue further. He sat down beside her, wiped her tears and said "If I had been in your place, wouldn't you have done the same for me? On the contrary you'd have done much more. You only dirtied my shirt whereas I had made your life miserable. You did that for me which no woman would ever do. Now you are crying because of my small help, which was on a purely humanitarian ground? Don't make me feel ashamed Riddhima.
He once again picked her up and she impulsively put her arms around his neck and her face against his neck. Making her sit on the bed, he hugged her and both of them cried together for a few minutes. Then caressing her cheek said "You'll be fine soon. Trust me." She nodded and closing her eyes prayed "Vinayaka, I don't want die now. I want to live for a few years at least as my athaan's wife. Bless me."
Time passed very slowly for Riddhima at the hospital. Armaan had got her a lot of magazines, but none seemed to hold her attention for long. "I wish I had brought the prayer books, which I read every day. It would have brought me some peace of mind and also some luck" she said to Armaan one afternoon. At once he pulled out his laptop and asking her the names of the books, found them online. Downloading it on his pen drive, he went out saying he'd be back in a few minutes. There was a Xerox shop next to the hospital. He went there and got a printout of the books, for her.
She was surprised when he handed it to her. When he told her how he had managed to, she thanked him profusely. He could see her eyes light up as she hugged the books to herself. Soon a nurse came to inform him that Dr. Sudha wanted him. He was extremely pleased when she told him that the match results were positive. Though it was not a perfect match, she said it was quite good to go ahead with the operation. She had already spoken with the surgeons and the operation was scheduled for the following Tuesday.
Armaan thanked Dr. Sudha for all her help, though she said there was no need as she only done her duty. Then he literally ran up to Riddhima's room as he didn't have the patience to wait for the elevator.
