PART 24
Maan rolled up the designs for the new apartment complex he'd been working on and set about clearing his desk. Today was the last day of Daksh's school term. His two months vacation is starting. Tomorrow is Friday. Soccer on Saturday. And on Monday…an elated grin broke out on his face at the thought of it…on Monday he was flying Geet and Daksh up to the Gold Coast in Queensland for a family vacation.
Geet's lack of trust in him had been his trump card in breaking down her resistance to the plan. She was not at all willing to spend a vacation with him. But, after long hours of requests, discussion, and pleas by him and Daksh, with half mind, she agreed on it. Maan knew, how she had thought and felt about it.
He'd produced an internet printout on the three-bedroom penthouse apartment he'd booked, plus printouts on the major tourist attractions they could take Daksh to—Sea World, Warner Bros. Movie World, Dream World…a family fun vacation all laid out to both of them so Daksh's eagerness for his mother to accompany them, and the lure of sharing in her son's new adventures, added to the winning package.
'Three bedrooms,' she'd pointed out in a stern way, denying the other temptation he had very much on his mind.
'Definitely three,' he assured her, though he secretly wanted only two to be used.
He wanted to give her, time to reach upon a decision. To do that, to win her lost trust over him, the only way is, she spend more time with him. And for that, they have to get away from all those memories and people, who are associated with their past. He has to take her away from all these bitter memories of past, where she want it or no, it keeps haunting her. A new place, a little fun together with their son, will definitely bring fresh thinking to her… She can think more clearly, about her, about him , their son and a family together. Maan has promised her, even after this vacation, if her answer is going to be a 'No', he will never force her for anything after that. But, she should never separate his son from him, which she promised she will never do. Finally, they agreed upon the terms, Geet and Daksh, will spend their vacation with Maan, in Gold Coast. And this vacation will decide upon, their future. And Maan is positive, that, he can win back her lost trust, in the coming days. He will make up for all his mistakes, and the pain he caused, this time.
He wanted her as his wife, he wanted his son to have all he deserve, and to give them all the happiness in the world. With a grin, he thought, of course, Daksh was not the only child he wanted to have. He fiercely resented having missed out on his son's birth, his babyhood, the toddler years. After he and Geet were married…
At the thought, Maan had a pang of guilt stab his heart. He checked his own eagerness as he realised he knew nothing about how Daksh's birth had been for her, whether she would be keen to have more children. She had been through a very very rough stage during her pregnancy and delivery. What if, she decide not to have one more kid. Maan dropped down to his office chair, closed his eyes. 'Geeet, I want to make up for all the pain I caused for you… I want to have more babies…. This time, I want to be with you, through out your pregnancy, to take care you… to pamper you, to make up for all those years….. Will you not give me a chance'. Tears welled up in his eyes. He decided, this time, things will happen only in her way…her wish…. If she doesn't want to have babies, then let it be so. May be, that is his punishment…
Maan never got time alone to talk properly with Geet. Somehow she, always finds a way to be away from him. They'd had such little private time to talk—mostly small snatches he'd deliberately maneuvered. Geet avoided being alone with him whenever she could. Avoidance, however, would be much more difficult for her while staying in the same apartment for two weeks. After Daksh went to bed…
Maan's train of thoughts was abruptly broken by his father's unheralded arrival—no call from his secretary, the office door swept open, and in he stepped with all the arrogant hauteur of a man who took authority as though it was his right. What the hell is he doing in Bangalore?
Maan felt himself bristling into attack mode and deliberately adopted a relaxed air, leaning back in the chair behind his desk and viewing his father with whimsical curiosity. 'To what do I owe the honour of this visit?' he drawled.
Since their confrontation over Geet at the Khurana Mansion two months ago, they had only met in boardroom meetings with nothing but business on the agenda. Only current and future property development projects were discussed between them, across a table with all other heads of departments present.
His father viewed him now with barely contained impatience, obviously frustrated by Maan's stubborn and rebellious stand against conforming to expectations. 'We will be celebrating Holi as usual this year,' he stated tersely. Which meant a big gathering of elite families of Delhi, for a highly festive lunch.
'I'm glad Mamma feels up to it,' Maan answered dryly.
His father's mouth tightened in anger. 'I'm amazed you have any consideration for her feelings since you haven't seen fit to give her the comfort of a visit or a call, and your daadimma is going to be back for Holi.'
'I've been too long on a one-way street with consideration of feelings, Dad. When it starts to go two ways…'
'She is still grieving over Dev.'
'Then I'm not the son she wants with her, am I?'
'You are the only son she has now.'
'Don't expect me to dance to that tune. Especially not on Dev's grave.'
'He was your brother.' The emphatic reminder was meant to sting and it did.
'More your son than my brother,' Maan flared back, losing his cool. 'His allegiance was to you, not to me. He sold me out for your approval.'
'He saved you from folly,' his father thundered.
Maan sucked in a quick breath and forced himself to contain the violent emotions surging through him. There was no point in arguing against entrenched prejudice. Waste of time and breath. 'Have you said all you want to say?' he asked in a calmer tone.
He watched his father fight an inner war before coming to the conclusion that it was time to shift ground before bad blood was irrevocably spilled. 'Your mother expects you to lunch on this Sunday,' he tossed out as though he himself disdained any need for his surviving son's presence at the family table.
'Are Geet and Daksh invited?'
'They are not,' he snapped, refusing to give a moment's consideration to the challenge.
Which was just as well, Maan thought, because he didn't want to change his plans of their vacation, which Daksh was too thrilled about. In now way, he will put down, his son's hopes, about his first vacation. And even if that is not the case, he doubted he could ask Geet into any meeting with his parents at this early juncture. So, the best option is stay away from all this.
'Then I won't be there,' he stated unequivocally.
It earned a furious glare. 'Your mother will be disappointed.'
'I'm sorry for her disappointment but it is of your making, Dad. Let's get this in precise perspective.'
'Perspective!' His father snorted in disgust. 'I can only hope your blindness soon passes.'
With the satisfaction of having the last word, he walked out, slamming the door shut behind him.
Maan was somewhat surprised to find he didn't care how his parents viewed his absence. All his life he had attended their parties, been a focus of their pride and pleasure. He'd actually fed their expectations of him. And been liberally rewarded for it. They have always, held him as a matter of their pride, infront of the society, to show the society that, this is their son, Maan Singh Khurana, the business magnet. Only daadimma has been, understanding, how he felt about the whole thing… Still, he has always given away himself, for their happiness. He thought, if it makes his parents and his family happy, he was more than willing to do it.
But taking Geet from him…taking Daksh from him…it had killed any consideration he might have had for their feelings. He didn't want to be with them. He wasn't sure he ever wanted to be with them again…certainly not without Geet and Daksh at his side, and both of them being welcomed into their company.
Sunday… Holi….
No doubt he would be missed and his absence commented upon by family and friends, much to the chagrin of his parents, but for Maan, Holi was simply the day he had to live through before he could take Geet and Daksh away with him for a two week together. He would quite happily stay in his Bangalore Mansion, dreaming and anticipating two weeks of his time with his most loved ones… His Geet and his son…
He stared at the door his father had shut and felt the world he had belonged to receding from him, losing its influence, losing its importance. He suspected the longer he stayed away from it, the less it would mean to him. In fact, it hadn't meant much for a long time—just old familiar connections that had floated through the emptiness of his life after his family had got rid of Geet. He'd given them his courtesy and attention but would he really miss them?
He didn't need them… nor their acceptance.
He needed Geet… and her acceptance..
And their son.
Though he couldn't deny there was also a bitterly burning need in him to have the injustice done to Geet, to them, acknowledged by his parents—acknowledged and redressed! To give back, Geet's lost honor in the society.
