Part 3
It has started snowing more heavily now and the car speed has reduced considerably. Geet is paying full attention to the road as skidding is a normal phenomenon in this weather. Maan, who is an inherently swift driver, has zoomed her by on the express way, without noticing her car. But his speed hurts him as he ends up running into a fender bender with a car ahead of him while trying to hit the brakes hard, and ends up causing traffic block on the expressway. Geet, who is trying very best to distract her mind by keeping up with her BMW's motion, now finds herself helpless as she has come to a screeching halt. The words of her husband Dev's letter start echoing in her ears again. The letter was addressed to Naintara, his high school sweetheart from India. She now ruminates the letter's every word!
My Dearest Naintara,
Please don't get too anxious and start doubting my intentions. You know how desperately I want to call you to New York and marry you right? But please try and understand my restrictions darling. I cannot just leave Geet and marry you without major consequences. If I lose her income, I will lose this magnificent house, the expensive cars and all the luxuries I live with. I can't afford it all with just my salary. We will be left homeless. Plus I need to stay in good terms with my family, friends and everyone else. I have already started talking to her friends, my family, and even her family, that Geet and I are currently having troubles. I have been carefully feeding them negative thoughts about her behavior and slowly mixing the poison a little at a time so everyone believes me. Even her family is starting to scold her for not paying attention to home and loved ones, and being too busy in making money. My plan is working, but I need time. I need to ensure that when we break up, I get to kick HER out of the house and not vice versa. I have been pretending to love her for 8 years, and frankly I am sick of it. I miss you. I need you. I love you. Please have patience my love. You will be mine very soon.
Yours and only yours,
Dev.
Geet finds herself distressed again. Why can't she get his words out of her head? She thinks about how she had loved him oh so much. They knew and dated each other for 3 years before getting married. They had planned and had a magnificent wedding together. They had been happily married for 5 years. That is why, when he asked her to stop dancing, she did. When he asked her to leave singing, she did that too. She understood his rationale in both situations. It was all about saving money. Was it all a ploy? How could he be showering love to her for all these years and not mean it? Geet is now finding herself unable to control her emotions and that is utterly infuriating her. She knows she has to remain strong. That's why, the moment she came across the email, she had instantly decided to leave their house without thinking twice. He has spread so many rumors that she cannot take any chances or trust anyone, at least not yet. She knows she has done the classy thing by leaving it all. She is not going to stoop to Dev's level but she knows she is going to work harder and make it even bigger. Although, how he survives the house and car payments, and how he keeps up with his current lifestyle, is not her problem anymore. Geet has left a letter for his family and her own family, telling them that she is leaving, she will be alright, and not to look for her. She has decided that she will leave her current job as well, and make large plans for bigger success. She pleads herself to start thinking about the future and forget the past. In all this thinking, she doesn't realize that the traffic has started moving already and she is about to miss her Manhattan exit.
She wakes up out of her trance and takes the exit. Tired of all the driving, she decides to take a break and quickly fetch some breakfast. The splendor and glory of Manhattan is all the more beautified by the white carpet of the fresh snow. She stops the car in front of a restaurant; takes a moment to adore this radiant view, and then gets out of the car to go in. Maan is leaving and getting out of the same restaurant. He sees her entering but avoids her such that she cannot see him. "This girl is following me everywhere. She is hell bent on ruining my weekend." he thinks to himself, attributing all his agitation to her mere presence. "But at least she seems to be okay now!" He can't help but think of her welfare to himself as he leaves from there.
Geet orders and eats her food, and silently leaves from there for the second half of her journey. Soon she reaches her Tai's home. During this ride, she has figured out exactly how she is going to plan out her next few days, close some open loops with her past, and move forward for a very vivid future awaiting her. Praying she actually finds her Tai at home, she rings the bell...
