Tum Kaun Ho?

A Maaneet Fan Fic

Chapter 51
May 6, 2011 4:15 pm

"GT, see, I made this for Dadi."

"Oh, JD, I can't look right now while I'm driving. Just wait a few minutes until we get home and then you can so me, okay,"

"Okay."

Geet drove down the quiet streets lined with trees that were heavy with perfumed blossoms and green leaves. It was a beautiful sunny day and warm enough to have the windows open. JD was begging Geet to roll down the back windows so that he could feel the breeze. Geet refused, saying that he could feel the breeze good enough from the front windows being open. She also knew that what he really wanted was to be able to put his little hands out the window. She definitely was not allowing that.

JD pouted, clearly not too pleased with his GT. First she wouldn't let him show his precious works of art. Then, she wouldn't give into his demand about the car windows. Things were certainly not going the way he wanted.

Geet was amused by JD's reaction. Most of the time nowadays he was pretty easy going, but every once in a while, when he didn't get his way, he would stick his bottom lip out, furrow his brow, and cross his arms angrily. He looked so cute that Geet always had a hard time not laughing. As laughing would just make him more upset, she did her best to control.

Geet knew that JD wouldn't be in a bad mood for too long. After all, she had a secret weapon that she could use. Once they were home and the car was parked in the garage, Geet announced that she thought ice cream would be a good afternoon snack. Just as soon as she said that, little JD's ears perked up.

"But I think only happy little boys will be able to have some ice cream. Are there any happy little boys around here?"

"GT, GT, I'm a happy boy."

Geet gave JD a surprised look. "Really? You're happy?" JD nodded. "Can I see a smile then?"

JD gave her a big smile and Geet smiled in return. Walking had in hand they both went inside and made their way towards the kitchen. Geet got out some bowls, an ice cream scoop, toppings, and the necessary ice cream. After preparing a bowl for JD and herself, she settled them at the table and requested JD to show his creations to her. While eating his ice cream, JD told how all the kids had been making cards for Mother's day. While most children made one, he made three.

"This one is for Dadi. This one is yours, GT. And, this one is for Mommy." Geet couldn't help but have a tearful smile at the last statement.

After clearing up their dishes, Geet asked, "Do you want to give Mommy her card?"

JD nodded and Geet held out her hand. He took it and they both made their way to the family room. Once there, they moved to the far side of the room where a table just about JD's height had two photographs with garlands placed on them. One held a lovely, smiling young woman's face. The other was of a young man, with typical army haircut, who JD looked more and more like every day.

JD placed his card next to the picture of the woman and said, "Mommy, I made this for you, for Mother's day. I hope you like it. I'm trying to be a good boy, 'cause I know you're watching like GT and Father say. GT's taking really good care of me, so you don't have to worry."

JD talked with his parents for a few minutes, then he turned to Geet and tugging on her hand, said with a frown, "GT, Harsh told me I can't call you GT anymore."

"Oh, really."

"Yeah, he said that I have to call you tayi because you and Uncle are getting married. But, that is so weird because what will I call Tayi if I call you tayi?"

"You're right. That is a problem. Let's see if we can come up with a solution."

Geet had no idea that when she made the decision to come to Dadi for help, that she would be agreeing to become the nanny of Vicky and Meera's son. Life had been very difficult the past few months since graduation. She had no luck finding a job in her degree field, and the one meager job she did have at the boutique was soon lost due to the downturn of the economy. With her limited resources almost depleated, she had finally decided to reveal her plight to Dadi.

She was shocked when Dadi told her that Vicky and Meera had been killed in a car accident, and how Maan had gone to Texas to pick up JD and bring him to Chicago. Geet felt awful that she had selfishly come seeking help when the family was going through such a difficult thing. Dadi, on the other hand, had looked at Geet's appearance as a sign. She was too old to look after such a small boy, and it would be better to have Geet take care of him than hiring some stranger.

So now, Geet stood at the doorway of a bedroom, looking at the forlorn little boy sitting on the bed. Her own despair at not being able to get a job in the difficult economy paled in comparison to the pain he would be feeling over the loss of his parents. She knew what it felt like to loose a parent, but not at such a young age. Geet didn't know quite what to do for him.

"Hello," she said softly, causing the little boy to look up.

"Who are you?"

"I'm Dadi's friend."

"What are you doing here?"

"Dadi asked me to help take care of you. I was hoping that you and I could be friends too."

The small boy looked at her with wide eyes, seeming to consider her words. "I'm JD. What's your name?"

"Geet."

"I mean all your name."

"Geet Handa."

"G...H...I don't like it. How do you spell Geet?"

Geet couldn't help but wrinkle her brow at the unexpected question, but she answered anyway. "G...E...E...T."

JD repeated the letters, then annouced, "G...T...I like it. GT rhymes with JD. You can be my friend and I'll call you GT."

May 6, 2011 4:56 pm

"JD, do you remember when you first called me GT?" JD thought for a moment, and then nodded. "Well, what letter does my name start with?"

"G."

"And what letter does Tayi start with?"

"T."

"So, since I will be your Geet Tayi, you can call me..."

"G...T...GT! I can call you GT!"

"If Harsh says anything to you, you can tell him that GT means..."

"GT means Geet Tayi." JD hugged Geet, super happy that she was still his GT.

Geet hugged him back, and then pulling away, asked, "So, my cute little JD, how would you like to go find Stella and we'll go play in the backyard with her."

"Yipee! Stella! Stella!"

JD ran out of the room, calling the dog for all he was worth. Geet glanced briefly back at the two photographs, folding her hands to pay her respects, and then she left the room to follow after their son. On her way to the back of the house she was stopped by Dadi.

"Geet beta, I need you to come with me. We have to make some decisions regarding the wedding venues. You know it will be a little difficult booking places because of the Fourth of July holiday. I want you to look at some pictures and then we will make some calls."

"Dadi, I don't have time for that right now. JD and I are going outside to play with Stella."

"But, Geet..."

"Dadi, I trust you. Pick whatever places you like. Right now, the three of us are going to go out and have some fun." JD came half running, half walking, pulling on a dog toy, the other half of which was in Stella's mouth. "Are you ready to go have fun, JD?"

JD answered afirmatively, and Geet ushered both him and Stella out to the backyard. Dadi watch them run around, playing with Stella, petting her and throwing sticks for her to fetch. Smiling at the beautiful picture they made, she acknowledge to herself that there was no use trying to make Geet come away from JD. The bond between them was as strong as any mother and son. She would leave them alone to play, and go make the venue arrangements herself.
