A Maaneet Tale

Chapter 2

Maan: "Why is Geet taking so long" I wondered in my head. I asked her just to go and make me a sandwich and get me a coffee, but she's taking so long as if she's making me a full meal.

I sighed and continued to do some more work. It was about 10 minutes later I heard the door of my cabin creak open.

I looked up and saw my fake girlfriend strut over to my table. She slammed the plate and cup down on the table and glared at me.

"I'm not doing this disgusting work for you" Geet said

Maan: "What? Being my secretary?" I teased. Of course I knew what she was talking about.

"No. Being your stupid fake girlfriend" she said in a flat tone

Maan: "I thought all the girls were all over me. Look's like somebody is missing out" I said and continued to type on the laptop.

"I quit" she said

I winced and saw her making her way to the door.

Maan: "Stop Geet" I said and went up to her. I couldn't let her quit. Not now.

"I'm sorry, sir" she said and turned to walk away again. But I grabbed her arm and pulled her towards me.

Maan: "You can't quit" I hissed through my teeth

"It's disgusting. Your disgusting. I can't believe your doing this to poor Sameera. What did she do to you? I bet it was her who broke up with you because your always so angry. Your always so moody. Your always so bo --"

Maan: "You don't know what she's done to me Geet" I squeaked out as the painful memories wafted back into my mind again. I was in danger on crying.

I looked at Geet to see her reaction. She opened her mouth to say something but closed it again.

I let go of her arm and then walked away from her. My voice gave it all away.

I was heartbroken.

I sighed and sat down on my chair, fighting with the lump in my throat. I wanted to force work upon myself. I wanted to do as much work today as I possibly can. I wanted to forget about Sameera. I wanted to forget about her.

"What did she do?" she whispered and looked at me. I looked back at her and was wondering in my mind whether to tell her or not.

Now I was angry.

Maan: "Girls. Selfish. Mean. Bitches" I said, repeating the words I thought of three years ago. I still remembered that day. As if it was yesterday.

"Not all girls are like that" she said

I stood up and walked over to her. She was clearly insulted but I didn't care. Girls deserved that.

Maan: "Yes they are" I said

"You know what? Why should I care? Why should I care what's happening in your life? It's your life, sir. Not mine. Just let me go" she said and turned around to walk out. But then she froze.

I froze as well.

Sameera was coming.

Maan: "Please don't" I whispered. I couldn't bare to be humiliated today in front of Sameera. What will she think?

She didn't say anything. She just stood there. She watched her texting on her phone, but coming towards my cabin as well.

She sighed and looked at me, and then she looked back at Sameera, and then she looked back at me again. She came up to me, cupped my face, and kissed me. I widened my eyes in shock. I judged her totally wrong because she was a totally amazing kisser when she actually tried.

I just closed my eyes and relished it.

When she broke away, I saw Sameera was frozen at the door. She had a strange look of pain on her face and suddenly, I felt sorry for her. But then I remembered how she cheated me.

Sameera: "Is this actually official?" she squeaked out as she looked at Geet, and then at me. Before I could even answer, Geet answered it for me.

"Yes. It's official. You can hand those files over to me" she said confidently and held her hands out.

Sameera slammed the files on her hands and looked at her from top to bottom. Geet didn't say anything. She just passed by her and exited my cabin.

I looked at Sameera and tried to regain my strong, angry posture. I sat back down on my chair.

Maan: "Anything you need to ask me?" I asked formally as I pretended to type on my laptop.

"Your making a big mistake" she said and left my cabin before I could even give her a speech on how much better Geet is being a girlfriend.

I shrugged and then looked at Geet from the window that was seperating my and Geet's cabin. She smiled and winked at me.

What could have I done?

I had no option but continue this disgusting work of his.

I closed my eyes and saw the look of pain in his eyes. He was shattered. Completely. I could see it so clearly in his eyes.

I sighed and looked at the pile of files on my desk, that Sameera had slammed onto my hands. I grabbed a pen and opened the first file to correct. Before I could even start, Sameera barged into my cabin.

Sameera: "Get up you filthy idiot!" she said and grabbed my arm. I stood up and slapped her hand of my arm.

"What's your problem Sameera?" I said and I was about to say more when I saw Maan standing at the door of my cabin. Listening. He put his finger on his lips indicating me not to say anything.

Sameera: "How dare you steal Maan away from me?"

"He was never yours"

Sameera: "Shut up you!" she said and pointed her finger at me

I shook my head in disbelief.

Sameera: "Your parents are at a better place. Thank God they died in the fire, otherwise they would need to deal with an annoying brat like you"

I stared at Sameera in shock as those cruel words were being thrown at me. I looked at Maan. His expression was anger that might explode any minute.

"How do you know?" I whispered

Sameera: "Experience file. You left it in Maan's cabin" she said and shrugged

Sameera turned around to leave and froze when she saw Maan.

Maan: "How dare you Sameera? You can't just say stuff --"

Sameera: "Shut up Maan" she said and held out her hand to stop him from saying anything further. She gave a glare to Maan and then exited the cabin.

I felt my heart rate increase as those words rang in my ears. I was angry.

"Let me give you a piece of my mind" I growled out loud and decided to follow her so I can give her a big lecture. Maan stopped to ask where I was going but I ignored him.

"Wait Sameera!" I said but the minute she heard my words, her pace quickened and she began to run.

"Why Sameera? Are you scared now huh?" I said as I half-ran and half-walked. I watched her get inside a car. I looked around myself and saw a rickshaw stopped to the side.

"Can you please follow that car?" I said and got inside the rickshaw

I fiddled with my dubatta as I watched the car in front of us.

"Bhai, please drive a bit faster" I said and twisted the end of my hair

Finally, the car came to a stop and I found myself standing in front of a building. I saw her get inside the building and I followed her inside before the door could close. She went upstairs and closed the door before I could get inside.

I rang the doorbell to her flat but she didn't let me in. And then my foot hit on something. I looked down and saw a small pink box that had a layer of dust on top. I picked it up and blew on it.

I think I knew what this was.

I opened the box and gasped when I saw a beautiful ring. I stared at the beautiful sparkly ring and then I heard voices. I balanced on my dainty toes and looked through the peephole.

It was Sameera and...

I looked around and saw another man. She was kissing somebody.

I was in danger of crying. I started to imagine what it must be like for Maan Sir to just stand here and watch himself getting cheated upon.

I balanced back on my feet again and stared at the beautiful ring which was in my hands that was meant for Sameera. I didn't know how to react. I began to wonder how I was going to face Sir after what I had just discovered.

As I stared at the ring, I felt somebody's gaze on me and I turned around only to find Maan standing there. He stared at the pink box that was in my hands and when he looked back at me, there were tears in his eyes that were in danger of falling down.

"You really loved her didn't you?" I whispered as I looked into his shattered eyes

He continued to look at me. He wanted me to tell him that this was all a big misunderstanding. He wanted me to comfort him and tell him that Sameera actually loved him and what he saw was just a hallucination. He wanted me to tell him that it was all an illusion. He wanted me to tell him that Sameera never kissed anybody and it all never happened.

But I couldn't.

"I'm sorry" I squeaked out and stared at the pink box.

I imagined him standing here. All alone. All heartbroken. Lonely. Sad. Shattered.

When I looked back up again, he was already walking down the stairs.
