PART 4 - Role reversal

"You are dating someone?" Mayank asked baffled. "Yeah" Nupur was sipping her drink slowly in order to distract herself. But the question was 'Why the hell she has to distract herself? Why is she feeling uncomfortable? Why is she sipping the drink like a kid with straw?' She was irritated with herself now. And she realized her drink was over. She pushed the glass aside. "You didn't mention it" She instantly looked at Mayank. "That am dating, 'it slipped my mind!" She tried to say it in a normal tone. "It slipped your mind?" Mayank asked again. "Mayank, we just met yesterday that too at night time, there was so much to catch up with, that it slipped my mind. And I would have told you by today. And the most important thing is that we were not in contact, and when you meet your long lost friend, you just don't go and say, 'Oh my dear friend I am dating' and I too didn't ask you about your girlfriend. Did I?" Nupur said, stunned by herself and took a deep breath. Mayank just shook his head. Was she taking out her anger? But she was right; even he didn't ask her if she was seeing anyone. But then he had not even thought about it. How can she see someone, and date? Why? But why couldn't she? She has her own life, what you expected her to do, wait for you? But why will she wait for you? I was her friend? Here you go, 'was friend'. No we still are friend. If that's true, why didn't she tell you this earlier? It slipped her mind. Can such things slip your mind? May be it does, or may be she is not serious. But she is seeing him. Nupur seeing someone didn't make right sense to him. It made, just he didn't wanted to accept it. All this thoughts were posing problem to his conscience now.

Nupur was looking at Mayank through corner of her eye. She had expected him to say at least something, like his usual self, argue back, but he looked confused. What was he thinking? Mayank Sharma, and confused! She knew him very well, and was trying to think what he could be thinking. Did it really slipped her mind that she was dating someone. How can? She didn't remember Dhruv, from the time she saw Mayank standing in his apartment. This was so not happening. This wasn't right. She didn't realize when her chain of thoughts shifted from Mayank to herself.

"What would you like to have Madame?" Both were brought back by the voice. Nupur's trance was broken, she looked at him, "I just had my lunch Dhruv, I am full. Did you have?" "Yeah I had in plane." Dhruv said and sat next to Nupur, exactly opposite to Mayank. "Oh hii Mr.?" "Mayank" Mayank said, forcing a smile. "Nice to meet you" Dhruv extended his hand and shook it with Mayank's. "Same here". "So how you know Nupur?" Dhruv asked Mayank. "We are" He wanted to say best, but then "friends since college days." "But I never heard much about you. Nupur, you never said anything much." Mayank felt bad hearing this. She never mentioned him. Had she forgotten him? No, "Well, we had lost contact" Nupur smiled weakly looking at Mayank, she knew he felt bad.

"So Mayank where are you staying?"

"I am Nupur's new neighour." He said. Dhruv looked at Nupur. "Well he started saying since yesterday" Nupur added quickly. Was she scared? Mayank thought to himself. "Yeah, I got job here and thought of completing my super specialization here, so what you do?" Mayank was observing his expressions carefully.

"I am into our family business. Settled over here, and soon planning to start my new life with Nupur" Dhruv said honestly passing a smile to Nupur, who smiled back. It was Mayank's turn to feel uncomfortable now after seeing the couple sitting in front of him, looking at each other.

"Hmm.. I have to go back for duty." He got up. "See you around Dhruv, bye Nupur" He left from there not to give them privacy, but rather for himself.

"Samrat, why didn't you tell me that Nupur is engaged?" Mayank asked Samrat, who was sipping his coffee. "Because she is not yet engaged. They are just seeing each other" Samrat was enjoying the irritated look on Mayank's face. "By the way why it bothers you?" He added further. "Because I think that guy is not good for her. The way he looks at her'" Before he could think of a appropriate term, Samrat cut him, "proves that he loves her"

"Whatever!" Mayank said in an annoyed tone. Samrat grinned looking at him and leaned back, "Someone is jealous" "Am not jealous!" Mayank looked at him, but he was still grinning, "She is my friend, I am just concerned for her"

"Oh to whom are you kidding mate, to me, who knows why you are here!" Samrat said in a serious tone. "It just doesn't seem good"

"What doesn't seem to be good?" Nupur asked entering the dining area after checking on Gunjan. Samrat chuckled looking at Mayank's expression. "Nothing about you!" Mayank said. "And why should I believe you?" Nupur asked taking a seat. "Samrat, what were you two talking about?" Nupur narrowed her eyes. "Mayank why don't you ask her?" Mayank coughed. Samrat smirked looking at him. Nupur looked at Mayank, and gestured him to speak. "I was asking about any Pubs around?" Mayank said in a casual tone, but after looking at Nupur's expression, he regretted it.

"What? You want to go in Pub? You drink? Why? You never did earlier! Then why?" Nupur asked him, a little shocked. "Relax! I just was curious. So I asked Sam, Right Sam?" Mayank passed a smile. Samrat chuckled "No Nups" Mayank looked at Samrat, as if he wanted to kill him. 'I swear you say anything further, and you are dead!'

"He wants to check out on hot blondes" This was the limit. "Mayank, are you serious? Didn't found anyone in India? I didn't expect this fro m you. You want to go to pub so that' By God! You are so changed!" Nupur said in a full filmy tone. She knew Samrat was lying and pulling Mayank's leg. She too wanted to do same.

"Enough!" Mayank said in a stern tone. "And for your information, Samrat told me he will take me out to his favorite pub, where he goes regularly" Mayank smirked, and was about to lean back on his seat when he heard "What? I knew it Samrat! That's why you used to be late! I hate you"

It was Gunjan, standing along the doorway. Nupur and Mayank were stunned looking at Gunjan. Samrat cursed Mayank, got up and went to her. "No sweet heart I don't, I swear! Mayank is lying." "No you do!" "Gunjan, I don't, don't you trust me?" He asked her honestly and hugged her. Gunjan stopped crying. "I do, I love you"

"Am sorry Gunjan, I was just kidding" Mayank felt guilty. He knew about her mood swings as Nupur had mentioned. "Its ok, I just felt' cant explain" Gunjan whispered. Nupur was just looking at the scene enjoying her coffee. Mayank thought she'll say something, in someone's defense. But she was a total third party. Finally she said, "Gunj, you need rest and Samrat shower your love same way you do" Nupur said coolly.

After bidding byes, Nupur and Mayank left in Nupur's car.

Nupur was driving, she was silent. Mayank was looking out of the window. She used to be never silent while driving and Mayank had to ask her to concentrate on roads, but now, she was silent. He knew she was thinking about something. "Where are we heading?" He asked just to break the silence. "To the Pub, where Samrat goes everyday!" Nupur snapped back, Mayank knew her silence was dangerous, but now for what. "Why are you talking like that? Are you mad at me? For what? What I have done now?" Nupur was not looking at him; she was driving looking straight forward. "Why you lied?" Mayank sighed. Couldn't Samrat cover it for him? "When did I?" Nupur gave him an angry look. "Ok, I simply said, because I never asked him about hot blondes," "I know that, but what were you two discussing?"

Nupur asked again hoping for the truth. "Are you in your mood swing now? You sound like that, or you got it from Gunjan? Even mood swings are infectious" Nupur put the car in 4^th gear and raised the speed. "That wasn't funny!" After giving him a glance, she continued " No, am not having mood swings I feel you two were talking about me, and you know very well, I don't like it!" Nupur almost shouted. What was wrong with her?

"Nupur, relax! You are definitely in your emotional swing right now, no need to explain, you still are the same, manic!" Mayank smiled at her. Looking at his smile, her lips involuntarily curved. "I don't know, am sorry Mayank," She looked at him. "I don't know I just'"

"Nupur I know you very well, something else is bothering you. But you are not sure with it. In short you are confused as always and that is coming out as your stupid anger." Nupur sighed. "I know, the thing is that I don't know what I actually want" She muttered t herself. Mayank got it. He remained silent as it wasn't the right time and she was a moody person. There was time to find it, and it's been just two days now.

Nupur stopped the car near an ice cream parlor. "Wow, treat for me" Mayank said in an excited tone. "No, in fact Dr Sharma is giving Dr. Kapoor a treat!" Nupur announced, freeing herself from the seat belt.

"You know Dr. Kapoor, you are still the Unpredictable" Nupur grinned. "So am I"

Mayank headed out and grabbed her favorite ice-cream, butterscotch. "We could have had it inside, I thought Mr. Mayank Sharma will like it inside, Infact I thought you won't allow me to have it on a chilly night, but Mayank Sharma is himself having it" She teased him. "No, it's just that we are having role reversal today" Nupur looked thoughtful, and agreed. "Yeah, I think so" They were enjoying their ice-cream leaning on the car, chatting like their old self. When they realized, their body was getting colder, and they will freeze, they left from there.

"So Nupur what are doing tomorrow apart from your work duties?" Mayank was hoping her to be free.

"No, am going out with Dhruv, some party I guess. You too are invited, sorry I forgot to tell you."

"Party, it will be fun I suppose" Mayank said to himself.
