At first, she thought it was a bomb. It was loud enough to be a bomb explosion.

Then she realized that something had come flying inside through the window. That something was in the room right now, bending over the broken glass shards.

She narrowed her eyes at the thing in front of her. She couldn't identify what it was. Something big, something dark, a body like a dog, but set higher, with yellow eyes.

And then, she saw it clearly.

There was a big wolf in the room with her.

It was a gorgeous animal, huge, muscular, dark with grey fur and a white streak on it's throat. It was looking at her with an almost human expression.

Wolves don't attack people, she told herself. Wolves never attack people. A single wolf would never attack a full-grown teenager.

And all the time she was thinking this, she was moving. She backed up slowly, feeling the bookcase behind her.

''There's something you need to get.'' A voice whispered. It wasn't a voice of some other person, but it wasn't her own voice either. It felt like dark cool wind, it felt like it's everywhere around her. The voice rang in her ears again. ''Something you saw on the shelf earlier.''

In an impossibly graceful motion, the wolf leapt at her.

She was too taken aback to be scared and was slammed into the bookcase. After that, it was complete chaos. Books were falling all around her. She was trying to get the heavy furry weight off her, and the wolf twisted sideways for an instant.

And that instant was all she needed.

She jumped at the right side to get away. And the strange thing was, she was actually getting away. Or, at least, being able to avoid the wolf's lunges as it aimed to knock her down to the floor again. Somehow, it felt like, she knew all this.

But, I don't know this, I never fight.

As she thought this, her movements slowed. She was no longer instinctive, she was confused.

And the wolf seemed to know it.

It's eyes glowed eerily yellow. They were more intense, and more savage than any animal she had seen before.

''Move now.'' The same mysterious voice snapped again.

Pia moved. The wolf lunged at the book case again, but she twisted sideways just in time to avoid being crushed, but the book case fell directly in front of the door, blocking the way out.

''Trapped.'' The dark voice whispered. ''No exit now, except the window.''

''Pia? Pia?'' It was Paul's voice just outside the room. The door opened by an inch, jamming against the fallen book case. ''What's going on in there?'' He shouted in panic, banging the door uselessly.

''Don't think about him.'' Pia's new brain whispered, but he sounded so desperate.

Her attention wavered, and the wolf lunged again.

This time Pia didn't move fast enough, and she was sent crashing back as a heavy body landed on top of her.

It hurt.

Even as she thought it, her vision started blanking out.

I'm dead. It's over now, she thought.

''Pia? Pia?'' Paul's frantic voice reached her dimly.

Pia's vision cleared. She wasn't dead. Yet. She was lying on the floor with a wolf on her chest.

Even amidst the horror, she felt fascination. She had never seen a wild animal this close.

She couldn't move, she realized. The wolf was stronger than her. Pinned underneath it, she was completely helpless.

Her eyes closed as she felt the cold wetness of it's nose on her cheek. It wasn't an affectionate gesture. The wolf was nudging at the strands of hair on her face, trying to push them away.

The cold nose moved down to her throat. It seemed to be sniffing her, tasting her, and looking at her, all at once.

Not looking at her, looking at her birthmark on her neck, she realized.

Another one of those ridiculous, impossible thoughts, yet it all fell into pieces.

''Reach out.'' The voice whispered. ''The weapon has to be there somewhere. You saw it on the bookcase. Find it.''

The wolf stopped, and it seemed satisfied. And then, it laughed.

It was the most eeriest sound Pia had ever heard. The big mouth opened, showing strong teeth, and it's eyes blazed with triumph.

''Hurry.''

Pia's eyes were fixed on the sight of it's teeth, but her hands were moving along the floor slowly.

The wolf didn't seem to notice. It's lips were pulling back farther and farther.

Not laughing anymore. She could see it's short front teeth and it's long back canines. She could hear a growl vibrating through it's stomach.

The cool wind voice had taken over Pia's mind completely. It was telling her what would happen next. The wolf would sink it's teeth into her neck, biting, killing, ripping flesh out. And she would die.

Except, that she had silver in her hand. A silver picture frame.

''Kill it.'' The cool voice whispered. ''You have got the right weapon. Hit it dead in the eye. Drive silver into it's brain.''

She didn't try to figure out how an ordinary picture frame would kill a wolf. She didn't object either, though.

But then a faint faraway sound rang in her ears.

''You are not a killer. You do not kill. You have never killed.''

I don't kill. Pia nodded slowly.

''Then you're going to die.'' The cool wind voice whispered brutally. ''Because the wolf won't stop before it kills you.''

Then it happened. The wolf's mouth opened. In a lightening streak, it darted for her throat.

Pia didn't think. She picked up the picture frame, and slammed it into the wolf's ear, not the eye.

The wolf gave an helpless squal, and staggered back. It's weight on her loosened.

Pia jumped sideways, getting out of the wolf's grip. She kept holding the picture frame.

''The bookcase. No, you can't move it. The window. Go for the window.''

The wolf had stopped shaking it's head. Even as she watched, it sprang at her. It's teeth were bared, and it's eyes showed pure menace and hatred.

I'm not a killer. I can't kill.

You don't have any choice.

The wolf sprang.

But it never reached her. Something else came soaring through the window and knocked it off-course.

''Now, look.'' She said tensely at the same moment he began. ''Look.''

They both stopped and glared again.

Misha's heart was slowing. She found that if she concentrated, she could make the strange feelings go away. It helped if she looked away from him.

Deep breath, she told herself. Ok, now let's get this straight. ''Who are you?''

He opened his mouth.

Wait, what am I doing? I was here to feed, wasn't I? Why am I wasting my time when I could be digging my fangs into her neck and draining the blood out of her? A faraway part of his mind whispered.

He ignored that thought, and went on. ''Raj.''

She looked at him 'Raj ' from the corner of her eye. He definitely looked more calmer.

''Raj. Naam toh suna hi hoga, types?'' She said as politely as she could manage.

He narrowed his eyes at her, and looked away. ''Who are you?''

''Misha Dobriyal.''

And when she said it, something flashed over Raj's face ' something there and gone before she could analyze it. But it made her feel as if she is standing on the edge of a cliff in cold wind.

''And, Kabir. Would that be ' your brother?''

''That's right.'' She nodded. ''Do you know him?"'

''No, you are just pretty famous, that's all. Being Dobriyals and everything.'' He tilted his head. ''Any other brothers or sisters?''

Misha blinked. ''Wait, you're taking a census?''

He did a bad imitation of his former lazy smile. ''I just like to keep track of my sister's friends.''

''Sister?'' She raised an eyebrow.

''Has Kabir ever mentioned anything about a girl called Rhea?''

She shook her head. ''No. And why do you wanna know? To see if you approve or something?''

''Actually, yes.'' He did the smile again, but with more success. ''We are an old-fashioned family. Very old-fashioned.''

''So, you're an old-fashioned family.'' She repeated.

He nodded.

''And you're in charge?''

''Well, out here. Back home, my father is.''

''And you're just going to tell your sister what friends she can have.'' She said, moving a step forward.

''Actually, I was coming to that-''

''Yes, you were.'' She smiled. She took another step toward him.

And she kicked him ' you know where.

He yelped and hopped backward. Once again, the sleepy smugness was gone from his face. He looked ' alarmed.

''I think you'd better go away.'' Misha said, pleasantly. ''You are such a jerk, honestly. What do you think of yourself?''

Raj stared at her in something like wonder. ''Hey. Hey, look. You know, you really don't know what you're doing.'' He said. ''If you knew..'' And Misha saw it again ' something in his face that made him look scary. Like the glitter of a knife blade in the night. Something that said, danger.

''Oh, go bother someone else.'' She said.

He opened his mouth and shut it. He managed a hurt and miserable flirtatious smile. ''Go back the way you came, turn left, walk straight, and you will reach the college.''

''Go.'' She repeated.

He lost the smile. ''That's what I'm doing.'' He started walking.

''Have fun with your sister.'' She said, and started walking the opposite way. The way Raj had told her to go.

As she walked, she felt dizzy. He was so weird. Weird in a way that scared her. If she'd believed in premonitions, she'd have been even more scared. She had a bad feeling ' a feeling that things were going to happen.

Now, I'm really going to die, Pia thought. Torn apart by two wolves. She was still clutching the picture frame, but she knew that there was no point in trying to fight both of them off at once.

Her heart was pounding so hard, and the female wolf was staring at her, her eyes were yellowish-green, and Pia stared back, waiting for the wolf to pounce on her.

The wolf held her gaze for another minute, eyes travelling down to her birthmark. She turned her back to her, and snarled at the bigger wolf.

Protecting me, Pia thought. Stunned.

Misha stared in utmost horror at the body lying on the floor. ''Tracker.'' She looked down at the lifeless body, drained out of blood. She bent down, but no tears came down. Her throat swelled. ''Who did this to you?''

Just then, she noticed a girl approaching her, and she hid herself behind a tree.

She stepped into view, and Misha was mesmerized. Her long hair fell perfectly up to her waist, her big green eyes narrowed at the sight of the body, lips curved in dismay. She bent down, and took Ruhi's hand in hers. ''I'll have to take care of this.'' She whispered, to no one in particular.
