Chapter 91: Sangeet – Part 4
Dhruv watched Aarya stare at the object of his affection with all the intensity of a bull in front of a waving red flag. Well, Nirosha had waved a red flag with all that feeling up on herself. Now she was going to have to deal with the raging bull. He laughed at what fireworks were bound to ensue when Aarya finally got his feisty princess alone…
Dhruv's eyes wandered on their own looking for the girl with the mehndi smudged around the edges. She was hiding out somewhere because try as he had, he had not yet found her tonight.
"Neela in wearing pink, in case you were wondering…" Shiv whispered conspiratorially.
"How do you know?" he asked automatically before Shiv's statement registered fully.
"I am not looking for her." He said turning back to Shiv, although why bothered to correct him now was beyond him.
"Yea, and my wife is a midget. Please! You could not be more obvious dude! I am just trying to save you some valuable time, which you appear to be in no short supply of. Seriously! You think maybe you could talk to her today? She doesn't bite. In fact, she is one of the sweetest girls I know. None of that bark or bite like Gauri."
"Don't let Gauri hear you."
"Oh please! We have said worse to each other's face. If I remember correctly, her choice endearments during our first night were Neanderthal and Sex fiend."
"Hey hey, if the name fits…" Dhruv started and Shiv smacked him on his shoulder.
He caught a flash of pink just then. "Alright, target in sight. This is a reconnaissance mission. Wish me Godspeed."
"Reconnaissance? Oh jeez! Seriously! I think you should kick it up a notch to at least espionage. Be like the male version of Mata Hari. Anything for the greater good and all that jazz."
"What exactly would I be spying out of the pretty lady in pink?"
"You know, there are times when I wonder why I am called the Casanova. I really don't think I am any better at wooing women than anyone else. But then, I talk to morons like you and I realize why. Jeez Dhruv! Why would you do espionage on your lady in pink? To steal the secrets of her soul, you nimrod! Anything to give you a fair chance!"
"You mean, an unfair chance? It's espionage, after all" Dhruv replied with a smirk.
Shiv rolled his eyes theatrically, before taking off.
Dhruv stood there for a moment afterwards, genuinely pondering the fallacy of this mission. He could deal with women like Gauri; they were so outspoken and open with their thoughts and feelings that there was essentially no guesswork involved. Neela, on the other hand, was more of the reserved and shy types, and he was starting to think that he was getting a bit too comfortable just watching and admiring her from afar rather than taking a chance and risk floundering like a fish out of water.
He had waited too long, because now there was no flash of pink that he could see.
He walked towards where he had seen her last and when he couldn't find her, he went behind all the blue curtains. He moved them out of his way as he walked behind them, which seemed to cause them all to rise up in rebellion because they all flew up in his face at once. He swept another few panels aside and then stood there for a moment, in a mass of Blue with not a stitch of Pink in sight. Suddenly, someone grabbed onto his right hand. Startled, he looked down… and found the stitch of Pink that he had been looking for all this time.
She was bending down trying to free her sari which was caught on one of her anklets. He assumed that she had been grabbing for balance at either the pillars or the curtains, but instead had reached him, because he saw her look up in surprise at finding her hand in his.
"Oh, I am so sorry. I didn't mean to grab you." She said quickly as she let go of him, but then stumbled as she lost her balance. He quickly took her hand again and when she still struggled with the tugging, he just picked her up in his arms to walk over to the window ledge. He placed her on its wide cool surface with her knees bent up so that he could untangle the sari's edge from her anklet.
She remained quiet as she watched him lift the edge of the sari and try to unloop the threads that were caught on her heavy anklet.
He took longer than necessary and not just because he didn't want to let go of this excuse to be near her, but also because he had to force himself to slow down and not let her proximity distract him and make the whole thing even more of a mess.
After a few moments, he finally spoke.
"It seems that your clothes are in mutiny every time I am around."
He didn't realize the exact implication of what he said until the words were out. He looked at her face to see her reaction and noticed that her cheeks were now blushed pink to match her sari. She had been staring at her feet before and now pulled it back from his hold.
"I am sorry. I didn't mean it that way." He asked as his hands followed her feet to finish what he started.
She looked up at him quickly and still made to move her foot back, but this time he held it.
Her lips parted, but she quickly bit down on it and looked away from him, although this time she didn't resist when he pulled her foot towards him gently. Something about that interaction made him less nervous and this time when he tried, the sari thread caught on her anklet finally loosened.
His touch still lingered on the soft skin of her ankle right above the anklet until she raised her eyes to his...
He felt like he had been waiting forever for her to look at him that way, even though it had only been six months… well, that was not really true… it had been a bit more than six months… it was not easy to know how much you liked a woman when subconsciously you always had to be prepared for her to fall for your best friend. While he was used to that and didn't really mind it usually, Neela was the first time that he had thought that being best friends with someone like Shiv really sucked sometimes. Because he and Shiv had met her together and she had barely noticed him, with how take she was with Shiv. To Shiv, she had been just another pretty girl – a very pretty girl, but very pretty girls were nothing new to Shiv. In hindsight, it was actually quite amazing that everyone had missed the signs, because even back then, there were always only two categories of women to Shiv. There were all women and then there was Gauri.
What Dhruv hadn't been prepared for was to like Neela despite the fact that she had fallen for Shiv at first sight… or to continue liking her through all the time that she had liked his best friend… or how he had felt like shaking Shiv for not understanding the extent of her hurt the day he got married to Gauri,… or how he himself had felt a sting when she admitted to not remember meeting him. He hadn't realized how forgettable he had been to her until that moment…
And now here they were…
He could tell from the way that she was staring at him that she was not aware of what she was doing.
He pulled his hand away gently and the anklets chimed, as if in protest.
The sound startled her out of her watchfulness and, even though night had fallen, the moonlight was bright as it entered through the window and illuminated the heightened color on her cheeks.
"You blush a lot…" he whispered.
His statement only made the pink to her cheeks more intense before she looked away.
"It's good that it's dark now. I am sure that someone would cast the evil eye on you if they saw how beautiful you are…"
He couldn't believe he said that! He called himself a hundred names in his head for not holding the impulse to spout corniness, but somehow managed to hold onto an impassive expression on his face.
But then he noticed that he had surprised her.
"Oh come on Neela, don't look at me like that. I only stated the obvious. You know you're beautiful."
"Why?" she asked, finally breaking the silence that she had maintained until then.
"Why what?" He asked, confused.
"Why should I know that I'm beautiful?" she asked quietly..
"Because I assume you have looked in a mirror before."
"That beauty means nothing. I could think anything I want of myself. How is that any sort of reflection on what anyone else thinks?"
"Is this a hot issue? I feel like I just stepped on a minefield."
Her cheeks turned pink again as she shook her head and said, "No no… nothing like that… it's just that beauty is so subjective. Just like attraction."
"I think beauty might be bit more objective than attraction. Humans are, after all, vain creatures."
She slid off the window ledge to get off then, but stumbled and he caught her.
"Third time today..." she said in a low voice, gripping him tightly on his biceps for support.
"I don't mind…" he answered.
She looked up at him in surprise again.
He held her gaze until she blushed and looked down.
"Sixth time today." He said then, close by her ear.
She tried to hide it, but he caught it when her eyes closed on a quickly indrawn breath. But before he knew it, the expression was gone…
"What's the sixth time today?" she asked finally.
"You blushing. Sixth time today."
"Oh…" she said, not knowing what else to say, and looked down biting her lower lip again.
"You're going to chew it to pieces."
She stopped biting and released it and he could see that it was now a deep red from all her abuse.
"And then all a man can think of is your lips…" he couldn't resist adding and she looked up at him, her eyes wide.
Now not only did her cheeks turn red enough to match her lips, but she also eased out of his arms to run away, the bells of her anklets giving her movements a rhythm that was only heightened by her form playing hide and seek with the blue curtains billowing around her.
