Geet and Maan got ready for work the next morning. She had briefed him about NT's perceptive questioning about the doctor's visit the previous day and her response to it. Maan commended her for her presence of mind and agreed with her that they have to be cautious with their plan till they are able to expose both of them.
Once they reached their office, they were given a royal welcome by all the office staff who wished them a very happy married life. Maan smiled and introduced Geet to them as the new manager. He specifically told Sasha and Tasha that they will directly report to Geet from that day onwards, much to their chagrin. Geet was shown her new cabin and just as she was settling down in her seat, she heard a knock at her door.
"May I come in Ma'am?" inquired Adi as he peeped in.
Geet looked up and giving him a warm smile, she asked him to come in.
"Adi, you don't need to address me as madam. Call me Geet as you always did. After all if it hadn't been you, I wouldn't have been taken in this company. Needless to say, I wouldn't have met Maan again and none of this would have happened. You'll always remain my good friend."
Adi blushed and said that he would address her by name outside the office but within it, he would like to maintain the office decorum and set an example to others. Geet smiled and said that she wouldn't force him against his will. Adi then briefed her about the ongoing projects and the cost issues. Geet appreciated his hard work and asked him to continue with it.
Adi took leave of her and was about to step out of the cabin when he bumped into Sasha. He jerked away from her as though he had received an electric shock and straightening his glasses, he quickly went back to his seat. Sasha gave him a disgusted look as she entered Geet's cabin.
"Geet....." she started but Geet raised her hand and said in an even tone, "It's madam."
Sasha gave her a perplexed look.
Geet sighed and elaborated, "It is disrespectful to address your boss by name Sasha. So, I'd rather have you address me as Madam or Ma'am, whichever you are comfortable in."
Sasha grimaced and bitingly said, "Ma'am, I...."
Geet again raised her hand to stop her.
"I don't think I heard you knock before you entered in," she said in a cool tone.
Sasha uttered an expletive under her breath and stepping out of the cabin, she knocked at the door.
"Can I come in, Madam," she said emphasizing each word.
Geet took a long pause and then said, "You may come in, Sasha."
Sasha walked in stiffly and dragged back the chair to sit. Geet, who did not look up from the file she was browsing, pointed the pen she was holding at Sasha and said, "I didn't ask you to take your seat yet, did I?"
Sasha's face turned red with anger but she remained standing.
"I came to brief you about the Khandelwal project that I am currently working on. It is the most prestigious project we have. I have already prepared the blue prints for it." She handed the file to Geet who took it from her and quickly skimmed through it.
"I've worked hard on bringing in fresh and innovative ideas. You may...."
Geet again raised her hand to stop her. "I'll take a look at these and get back to you. You may leave now, Ms.Sasha."
Sasha looked around uncertainly, "But I wanted...."
"I think I spoke in plain English, didn't I? Did you not follow what I just said? Should I repeat myself? You may leave. NOW." She raised her voice a little as she rounded out the last word.
Sasha looked clearly displeased with the rude treatment she was being meted out but she could do nothing about it. After all Geet was her boss now and the boss's wife too. If she antagonizes her, she may get thrown out of her job. She couldn't risk losing such a well paying job. She quickly left the place before being disgraced further.
Geet looked at her retreating back and smiled to herself. Sasha just got the first taste of her own medicine. There is still a lot more to come, she thought before she gets straightened out. She then called in Tasha.
A flustered Tasha came rushing in, "You called me, Geet? Sss.... Sorry.... Ma'am?" she asked, nervously caressing her pony tail.
"Yes, I did. I've always wondered what your role in this office was besides following Sasha like a loyal poodle. Do you have any real work here?" she asked sarcastically.
"I....I....arrange meetings and manage the files," stuttered Tasha.
Geet's eyes narrowed as she looked up at her. "Isn't that the job of the secretary?"
"Yes, Geet...I mean.... Ma'am, silly me" she laughed nervously. "After you left there was no one taking care of your portfolio. So I've been doing that."
"Mmmm.....So you are standing in for the secretary right now. But what was your job when I was working here as the secretary?"
"Ma'am ....I....I..."
"You were Sasha's informant and partner in crime, weren't you?"
"Yyyes, Ma'am. I...I ...mean..No ma'am," stammered Tasha as she started sweating profusely.
Geet gave her a stern look and said, "I don't care what you were doing till now, Tasha. But from now on you will make yourself useful in this company. If you don't, I will not hesitate to show you the door."
"Yyes... Ma'am. I'll do whatever you want me to."
"What is your basic qualification?" Geet asked.
"I'm actually a qualified interior designer but then Sasha never allowed me to do anything. She would do everything herself and take the honours. I was reduced to merely carrying out her orders."
"Ok, from today you will do the interior designing of the Patel project. It is a small project but depending on how you perform, I'll give you more responsibilities."
"What about the arranging of meetings and other secretarial jobs?" asked Sasha.
"Don't worry, I'll take care of them in addition to my current responsibilities, till we find a good and qualified replacement. Now here is the file relating to the Patel project. I want a first draft of your designs in the next three days."
Tasha heaved a sigh of relief. "Thank you, Ma'am for giving me the opportunity to put to use my education," she gushed and stretched her hand to shake Geet's.
Geet gave her a perfunctory handshake and said, "Now get on with your work without wasting any more time."
Just as Tasha was leaving, Maan called Geet and asked her to meet him in his cabin.
Geet hurried to his cabin and knocking at the door, she entered in. Maan's face brightened up seeing her and he quickly walked towards her. Holding her hands in his, he led her to the sofa and sitting next to her, he took out a file.
"Geet, in the last two days, I set in motion our plan to help women who are affected by ruthless NRIs. I've already got in touch with a couple of my friends in the U.S. and Canada and they have promised to set up the overseas branches. We'll have to file the necessary documents to register our N.G.O. here before they can initiate action at their end. I've already taken care of the necessary paper work. We need a suitable name now. Do you have any names in mind?"
"What about Sthree Shakti?" asked Geet.
"That's an apt name. After all our aim is to empower afflicted women. I'll get in touch with my lawyer and ask him to go ahead and file for registration. I've set up an initial corpus fund of Rs.15 crore from my personal resources. We'll mobilize more resources through concerts and charity events. My childhood friend is a leading pop singer. He has promised to perform for free for the cause. "
"Who is he?"
"Sushant Malhotra."
Geet's eyes widened in surprise. "Sushant Malhotra is your childhood friend? You mean THE SUSHANT MALHOTRA?" she asked excitedly.
Maan was amused to see her enthusiasm. He nodded and asked, "Do you know him?"
"Know him? I simply love him!" she said, her face flush in anticipation of meeting her idol.
"Love him?" he asked skeptically. "Now that is serious. I think I'm now having second thoughts about inviting him over. Wouldn't want my brand new wife drooling all over him. "
"Oh come on, Maan. Don't be a spoil sport. I love his singing, not the man. Please, please, please invite him over to our place," she begged, with her hands folded.
"Ok, baba. I'll invite him over for dinner this weekend provided you do not neglect me altogether when he is around," warned Maan and she readily agreed.
She then excused herself saying that she had lot of work to take care of. Maan tried to stall her holding her wrist and pulling her tantalizingly close to him but she gave him a sharp tap on his knuckles with her pen, forcing him to loosen his grip.
"Work comes first, Maan. Will meet you for lunch. You can continue this then," she said as she hurried out.
"Yes, Ma'am," Maan mocked her aloud and smiling to himself, he turned his attention to his work.
Geet spent the next two hours meticulously pouring over the blue prints Sasha gave. She buzzed in Sasha when she was finished.
Sasha knocked at Geet's cabin door this time and entered only after being called in.
"What is this, Sasha? I'm disappointed with these shoddy blue prints. You did tell me that this was a prestigious project. "
"Gee.... Ma'am, I really worked hard on this and gave it my best."
"Your best? You call this your best? Then I must let you know that your best is not good enough. The blue prints are anything but novel. Moreover, there are grave flaws. The clients had asked for the provision of a club house, but you haven't made any provision for it. The clients hadn't asked for a swimming pool but you have included one in the plan. Were you paying attention to what was expected when you chalked out your plan?"
"Yes...I....," Sasha fumbled for words.
"I want you to rectify the flaws and come up with a more novel plan. I've jotted down some of the things you can include in it to make it more attractive, appealing and also environmental friendly. Go through them and incorporate them suitably. I want the revised blue prints in the next couple of days."
"Next couple of days? That's not possible Ma'am. The corrections you are expecting are extensive," said Sasha in a complaining voice as she skimmed through Geet's papers.
"I don't want excuses Sasha. You had plenty of time to work on these blue prints and you have only yourself to blame for being careless and unimaginative. So get moving now instead of arguing with me. You may work late if you want to but I want the designs by Friday forenoon. We have a meeting scheduled with the clients that evening."
Sasha cursed under her breath as she picked up her file and the papers and left, resigning herself to working long hours for the next two days.
