Maan stood their gaping at the door........he had just been made a fool by foolishly being tricked into believing that no one remembered that today was the day he was due to turn 21.....and turning 21 meant he was allowed to officially start working in his dad's office; Khurana Constructions; even if it was only part time due to his brother's stubborn attitude..but that was besides the point....the real point was....that Maan Singh Khurana had just been fooled.....something that no one could even dare to do and yet he stood here after being shamelessly fooled by his sister-in-law or rather TO BE sister-in-law. "To be" â because his brother still hadn't quite popped the question yet, even though they had been engaged for nearly 2 years now. Which is what forth the "DEAL" between him and his Tara Bhabhi.
Tara, short for Naintara, and his brother (Dev) had met at a business party a couple of years back whilst they were still living in Canada. Tara was the daughter of Prakash Rathod, who was a successful owner of hotel chains in Canada and had recently completed a contract with the Khurana's. Tara and Dev had hit it off from the first note and were soon seeing each other. Both families were happy to hear this and gave it the all go soon after finding out about them. The families conducted a small engagement ceremony with a few friends and associates, officially announcing to the world that they were together and a couple. But soon after that, Dev had gotten busy with the family business and as Dev was now finally starting to get to grips with the company and its dealings, Raj Khurana(their dad) had decided to hand over the company to him. This came as a surprise to Dev and he almost seemed to disappear as he juggled with the takeover of the company and controlling it from the UK and Canada simultaneously. She meant that Tara and Dev didn't spend much time together, but Tara didn't complain she understood. What she didn't understand was the fact that 2 years down the line, it was still the same if not worse, as she found when she moved with her father to the UK just last year. The Khurana's had permanently decided to reside in the UK now, and seen as Tara would have to move too, after her marriage â they advised Prakash to move down too as he had no one besides Tara after his wife had passed away after giving birth to Tara. And this way Tara wouldn't get too worried for having left her father all alone. However, even the move didn't seem to have an effect on Dev, as he continued to remain busy and didn't give any time at all to her. During this time though, Tara had become quite close to the other family members, as she found the motherly love she had craved for, in Simran Khurana (their mum) and a young brother in Maan. Even though Maan was 3 years younger than Tara was, they seemed like best friends to each other. They understood each other quite well as they had a mutual topic of interest: DEV.
Maan suggested this idea of the deal, though he was quite selfish with its terms. The deal relied on Tara convincing Dev to not force Maan into another degree program, after he had just completed his 3 year degree in architecture. Dev had his reasons, he knew Maan always was fond of science and had wanted to do something science related at university but because the whole family was into architecture, he had felt it was better to continue in that line so that by the time he graduated he would be able to help out in the company as his father had strict rules that no one was to enter the company under the age of 21(to ensure everyone at least had some experience of further education) but Dev didn't want Maan to feel like he was given the chance to fulfil his dreams and was rather forced into the family business. Also apart from being something new for any Khurana male to have done, Dev had a much serious reason. The company was going through a huge transition and although Dev was trying hard to keep the Khurana's reputation up, the shares were falling, meaning Dev had to work extra hard to bring it back to its number position. Amongst all this Dev didn't want Maan to have to go through the hustle he was going through whilst handling the company take over. It would be too much to cope at first instance and so he had gotten Maan a place in a London university to do Pharmaceutical Chemistry, as that was the only available in clearing. Maan, who Dev hadn't informed about the huge issues with the company, never quite understood the reason why his brother was too keen on getting Maan to do a different degree program right after finishing one in architecture, but he had full faith in his brother and knew he would one-day tell him of his "reasons" â just when that day would come...he didn't quite have a clue.
Whilst Maan remained to be patient with Dev, there was no harm in trying to persuade him to drop the idea fully. That is where Tara came in, because she was to convince Dev to let go of the idea and if he was so adamant on Maan not joining, then he wouldn't and could perhaps take a year out with friends, but Dev didn't want to reason, making Tara feel like she had no say in the family matters.
This brought in Maan's side of the deal. Maan used to call Tara by her name, but since the "engagement" Dev often had a go at him and would get angry at him â telling him to respect Tara and call her bhabhi.....this had got Tara angry and had declared that she wasn't his bhabhi until she was married, and since she was still engaged, Maan had full right to call her Tara only. This had peeved Dev off and Maan as usual was the balli ka bakra between these two. So Tara had gotten a promise from Maan to always address her as Tara so as to remind Dev that he still hadn't married Tara. Maan had initially objected to the idea knowing the stress his brother was going through but he had taken a liking to Tara and so followed through.
Needless to say, Dev had not backed off with the university idea and so Maan was back to addressing her as bhabhi....but only to see her get annoyed as he knew well that Dev bro had a surprise up his sleeve and was planning to pop the question at Tara's bday which was coming in a few weeks.
So everyone seemed to be getting what they wanted and were set to be happy sooner or later, except for one â MAAN himself â as he was still made to go to university, and start a fresh at the age of 21 in a field he hadn't touched in a long long while. The university was at a great distance from his house, taking him an hour and half by train to get there, meaning he had to be out of the house by 7.30AM at the latest to be there for a 9AM lecture.
Maan looked over at his clock; 7.05AM, as he put his watch on and grabbed his bag to go down for breakfast.
