Chapter twelve

Om Mangalam

Well the function was not over yet nor the torture period. And there Megha was ready to torture Mayank-Nupur with every little chance she had. she wasn't doing these things because she wanted them to fall in love. She was doing these simply because she was mad at them and their stupid ideas. And she was mad at herself for helping them. This time it was dancing. They were asked to hit the floor and that too with a romantic number! But Mayank-Nupur didn't have a choice. All their protest was buried down by the clapping and cheering from the crowd. Mayank signaled her a 'let's do it' and she followed him. They started moving with 'tumko paya hain' from 'Om Shanti Om'. But it dint matter to them if it was a romantic song or a bhangra as long as they had to put up the drama. Soon the lights were dim and other couples joined them in the dance.

TUMKO PAYA HAIN TO JAYSE KHOYA HUN

KEHNA CHAHU BHI TOH TUMSE KYA KAHU

Nupur: umm.. mayank, don't misunderstand di huh. She's just mad at me for doing these.

Mayank: I know.

He smiled in reassurance. And Nupur felt relieved.

KISI JABA MAIN BHI WHO LAVSE HI NEHI

Mayank: job hi kaho it went pretty well, didn't it?

Nupur: it felt horrible! But yap, it went well.

SACH HAIN KUCH BHI NEHI

And they swirled and twirled with the song.

Mayank: did you talk to john.

Nupur: no! I didn't get the time. Everyone was surrounding me all the time! But I will today. What about Tina? You talked to her, right?

Mayank: actually no.

Nupur: WHAT?

She looked around to see if anyone was bothered about her sudden shouting. Fortunately no one was.

Nupur: why? You should've called her. Now she's going to kill me!

Mayank: chill. She won't kill you. She won't even talk to now! It's better though.

Nupur gave her a glare.

Mayank: ok, I'll call her today. Now can we enjoy the dance?

Nupur: sure!

She smiled.

Soon the dance was over and Mayank and Nupur sat down in a corner when adi came.

Adi: hi, di!

Nupur: hi ,Adi! And di?

Adi: well I've decided to call you di as bhabi sounds so backdated!

Nupur and mayank laughed at his exclamation.

Adi: toh kaysa chal raha hain? Now that you're officially bhaiya's girl friend!

Mayank: Adi!!!!

Adi: what?

Nupur: its ok, Adi. Leave him.

She told with a teasing smile towards Mayank.

Nupur: and to be honest, it sucks being Mayank's official girl friend!

And I can tell that she was being honest, really.

Adi: I know! Tabhi main samajh nehi payi tum kyun bhaiya se shadi kar rahi ho!

Mayank shot an angry glare at him but he ignored.

Nupur: karna parta hain adi.

She pouted.

Nupur: hamesha hum who nehi kar pate jo hame achcha lagta hain.

Mayank could sense that she was becoming sad so he distracted Adi to give Nupur some time alone.

Mayank: hey Adi, let's have ice cream!

Adi: oh.. ok..

Mayank took his hand moved to the catering area leaving Bupur tangled in her thought. She knew she wasn't doing right. It was wrong- for her, for Mayank, for their families and specially for john and Tina. But she didn't have a choice, not according to her.

The ceremony was over before midnight and all the guest left. Once again nupur had to bent down to seek their blessings making her doctors trip sure for at least twice! And again giving tough competition to the beauty pageant contestants in showing her teeth!

It was mid night and nupur decided to call john. He picked up after a few rings.

Nupur: hello sweet heart!

John: hi , darling! How're you doing?

Nupur: good. The engagement got over just now. How are you?

John: how'd I be without you?

Nupur: I'm so sorry honey. I don't like this at all. Leaving you alone and living here! I'm so sorry.

John: I know Nupur. And please don't be sad. I understand and its important. You just do what you must do ok? Don't worry about me.

Nupur: I love you, john.

John: I love you too.

Mayank tried to call Tina and sort out the problem. But she didn't pick up his call. She was mad at him. And he knew he had to give her time to adjust. It's not easy for a girl to be ready to share the man she loved, not even for a drama.

It was Mayank and Nupurs wedding day. A week had passed since they got engaged. And in between mehendi, haldi and a few other rituals were performed. Nupur was half mad by now. She didn't have a single moment to sit and relax since she got engaged. Everyone was around her round the hours. She was made do everything. They made her go shopping with them, go to the spa and even testing every item on the menu to be served on her wedding day! And there was hustle in the house 24 hours. Everything was messed up and by the time her wedding day came, she was completely exhausted.

She got ready in a red and golden lehenga dadi had chosen for her. It's funny how she was wearing a dress designed by someone else when it was her dream to get married wearing a dress of her own design. But it didn't matter. She wasn't getting married! it was a drama. But her design or not, she was looking gorgeous despite of her being extremely tired.

Mayank came with the barat wearing a golden sherwani. He looked like a prince. But he wasn't going to get her princess, he was going to perform in a mad drama.

Everyone around them was so happy. Happy for them. But Mayank and Mupur was far from feeling happy. Mayank felt nervous while Nupur was too tired to feel anything else. And in between she found herself sitting down for the rituals, going round and round after Mayank when he told her to as she couldn't understand what the pandit was saying. She saw Mayank tying the mangal sutra and putting the vermilion on her forehead and heard the padit reciting enchantments.

She found herself taking blessings from the elders and dadi and her uncle aunty and Megha crying and hugging her. And heard dadi saying Mayank something about taking care of her. She didn't catch what happened after that. Sometimes later she found herself sitting in the car going towards her new home where she had to pass one long year.

I always wonder what goes through the mind of a bride when she gets married. Does she feel happy for entering a new life? Does she feel sad for leaving her home? Does she feel both? I don't know. What I know is, Mupur didn't feel any of these. The only thing she felt was tiredness, immense tiredness.
