Chapter 3: A Bride and Groom
She looked uncomfortable in the heavy sari, he thought, as he watched her fidget again. He didn't know why they insisted on wearing so much crap for a wedding, you couldn't even see her face or really much of her at all, what with the gold and the other million ornaments of all kinds covering so much of her body. He knew his mother had been the one responsible for this. In the midst of all the chaos during the day's events, she had somehow found the time to get the jewelry that she wanted to give to her younger bahu by sending someone back to their home. The sari also looked like it was his mother's choice, although he did not even know how that was even possible in the little time that they had. It just did not look like something Gauri would have picked out, with the amount of work that he could see running through it. How was she even standing up? She fidgeted again, this time trying to make it as inconspicuous as possible, but he could see that she would not have any reprieve any time soon, as his mother had a death grip on her hands and was walking around with a bunch of his other aunts and cousins and Lord-knows which other female relations to show Gauri off. He didn't get that though - why his mother was so attached to Gauri. Their mothers had been great friends, yes, but he didn't see anything special about the girl that was so different from any other girl that made his mother love her so much, and the affection had increased even more after Gauri's mother passed away.
He saw her bring her hand up to her face suddenly and saw the perspiration starting to bead of her forehead. She was going to faint.
"Mom, why don't we sit down? We have been standing forever." He said rather suddenly.
His mother turned to look at him and said, "Shiv, it's rude to interrupt when someone's talking." But then looked at Gauri and asked, "Do you want to sit down, dear? We have been standing so long…" like she had thought of that idea all on her own! His mother really was something else.
Gauri looked at him in surprise and a smidgen of gratitude as they walked over to sit at the bride and groom's table, but he didn't acknowledge it and in fact let her know that it wasn't for her benefit as he said, "It's not because I care for your comfort. The last thing I want is for my bride to faint at the reception. Imagine what everyone would say. I think that the way we got married is enough gossip for a lifetime, don't you think?" He didn't know why he had to be so flip about it, but something about her always made him say the worst things.
She looked at him, her eyes widening, her nose twitching, and her jaws clenching in anger – a sight that he had seen no less than fifty million times during all the time that they have known each other. He knew that there were a slew of verbal attacks now collecting on her tongue and it would only be mere moments before she lambasted him, her favorite hobby, even above burrowing her head into a microscope to study the most exotic lives of single-celled organisms.
So, he was surprised when she stopped herself and turned away from him.
"Gauri?" he called her name.
"What?" she bit out.
"Oh nothing, just making sure that you haven't lost your power of speech since marrying me. I mean, it's not every day that a cross, over-opinionated, termagant like you decides to hold her tongue. Maybe you are already learning the role of a pavitra patni? Wow, will wonders never cease?"
And that did it, it snapped her out of whatever expression that had come over her face that made him uncomfortable. Because she now turned back to him to say, "Listen, you Neanderthal! The day that I become a "pavitra-patni" to you will be the day that amoebas will finally rule the Earth!"
"I would have chosen something a little less nerdy, but I guess you can't help it. Whatever floats your boat, wifey." He said with a smirk, feeling better now that they were back to their regular modus operandi.
"Wifey? Wifey?" she sputtered now and the dangling little things on her large circular bridal nose-ring scraped her lips, making her wince. She quickly brought up her fingers to touch the corner of her lip and gently rubbed where she had hurt herself.
He felt a surge of lust so powerful in that moment that he leaned back from her. She noticed the motion and looked at him to say, "Oh stop! It's not going to bleed on your designer clothes!"
His brain must be addled and his body must be suffering some malady from getting married without any prior notice. He needed to have a conversation with both parts of him to clear the confusion. Better yet, he should attach a sign to her that says, "Nothing to see here, Shiv. Keep moving." Yes, that should work…
"Congrats, Gauri…" he heard suddenly and looked up to see that Druv had walked over to their table. Gauri stood up.
"Are you okay?" Druv asked now, watching Gauri dab at her lips still.
Why won't the senseless woman stop such suggestive actions?? He thought as he stood up as well and said, "Yes, she is okay." He didn't know why he did what he did next, because he turned her back around to face him and lifted her chin in his hands to rub the part of her lips that had darkened more red than the rest of it. She didn't resist him in a moment of utter shock and her expression was enough to snap him out of what he was doing, and he let go of her quickly.
"She is okay." He said, going for nonchalant, but failing as he saw Druv look at him, one of his eyebrows raised in question. And suddenly he needed air, and he walked away mumbling something about when this infernal affair will finally be over so he could get some sleep.
Gauri turned back to Druv and said, "Excuse him. He can't help being several rungs lower on the evolutionary ladder."
Druv laughed out loud and said, "You were always a funny girl, Gauri. I have always liked you."
She looked up in surprise at his proclamation; she had always thought that all of Shiv's friends had shared his opinion of her and disliked her as he did.
"I have a good feeling about this." Druv said now.
"About what?" she asked, confused.
"Oh, nothing, nothing. Let me officially welcome you to the family." She remembered then that Druv wasn't just Shiv's best friend, but also a second cousin through his mother's side.
"Thank you" she said, not entirely sure how she felt about being part of Shiv's family. It was a rather large family and they couldn't really go anywhere without running into someone related to the Kapoors, while hers consisted of her father and a few other uncles and aunts and two cousins. But she liked her small family and had never thought that she actually wanted to be a part of Shiv's family. It didn't look like she had any choice in the matter anymore…
