Chapter-13 Part-D

It was the night before last examination. Samrat was in his room, sitting on bed with an open book, but he was lost in some keen thinking. When nupur came in his room with coffee, she was a bit confused to see samrat deeply lost in studies, but soon she understood that he was not revising, but thinking some thing very deeply.

"So, kal ke liye revision ho gaya mere bhai?" Nupur chirpily entered the room, and sat beside him.

"nahi, bas thoda sa baaki hai!" he replied, and then looked at two cups of coffee. 'Arre waah, coffee??"

"haan, socha kal toh main yahan se chali hi jaungi, toh kyun na bhai behen aaj saath coffee ke maze le?" she smiled. "waise, mere aane se pehle tum kya soch rahe the?"

"yehi ki tumhara murder kaise kiya jaaye!"

"what?" nupur widened her eyes.

"arre mazaak kar raha hun…. Tumhara naam sun kar toh murder bhi darr jayega!" samrat grinned.

"very funny!" nupur taunted. "Par batao na, itni gehraayi se kya soch rahe the?"

"yehi, ki uss student tak kaise pahuncha jaaye, jiski wajah se chashmish par cheating ka blame gaya. I'm sure ki ye kisi ne plan karke hi kiya tha….. aur bahut jaldi main use dhoond loonga!" he replied.

Samrat drank a sip of coffee and appreciated it, saying that though he never likes to appreciate his sister, but he could not deny the fact that nupur prepared the world's best coffee. While he slowly drank the coffee, Nupur looked at him with questioning eyes.

"Samrat, main bahut dino se tumse ek baat kehna chaah rahi thi…. Pehle sochi ki na kahun, par ab mujhe lag raha hai ki ye baat keh deni chahiye." Nupur said.

"haan bolo na?"

"tumhe nahi lagta samrat…….ki tum aajkal kuchh zyada hi chashmish chashmish karne lage ho?"

"I know….. aur kyun na karun, ab uske liye main nahi sochunga toh aur kaun sochega? After all, wo meri best…… no, meri special friend hai!" he smiled.

"special friend hai……. Ya fir someone special?"

"Oh God….. nupur please, ab wapas se wo sab mat shuru kar dena…… ki mera aur chashmish ka friendship se kuchh zyada relation hai…. Wo meri dost se kuchh zyada hai… etc etc etc….."

"Samrat???" nupur glared at him, "I'm serious! Kya tumhe kabhi aisa nahi laga, jaise tumhara aur gunjan ka dosti se kuchh zyada relation hai?"

"Nupur please! Mere aur chashmish ke beech aisa kuchh nahi ho sakta hai!" samrat avoided eye contact with her.

"Achha, waise hi, jaise kabhi mere aur mayank ke beech aisa kuchh nahi so sakta tha?"

"matlab?"

Nupur smiled. "pata hai, pehle main bhi tumhari hi tarah samajh nahi paati thi, ki mere aur mayank ke beech dosti hai ya usse kuchh zyada…… par jab bhi uske paas hoti thi na, toh ek alag si feeling hoti thi…. Jaise…… jaise main bas uske paas hi rahun…… haan, wo thoda kam bolta hai, par jab bhi bolta tha, toh bas dil karta tha ki uski baatein sunti rahun……. Samrat, kya tumhe kabhi ye sab feel hua hai?"

Nupur looked at samrat excitedly, waiting for him to answer in positive. But instead, samrat remained silent and looked away, somewhat blushing. She grinned at this reaction of samrat.

"tumhari khamoshi saaf saaf bata rahi hai ki tumhe apni chashmish se pyaar ho gaya hai!"

"what nonsense nupur!" samrat rolled his eyes.

"achha? Ise tum nonsense kehte ho?" nupur was surprised, "din bhar gunjan se baat karne ke baad bhi tumhara mann nahi bharta hai….. ye pyaar nahi, nonsense hai. Wo thoda sa smile kare, toh tumhe lagta hai ki tumhara din achha raha, ye pyaar nahi, nonsense hai. Wo zara si pareshani mein hoti hai, aur tum zameen asmaan ek kar dete ho uski pareshani door karne ke liye….. ye pyaar nahi, nonsense hai. Wo tumse baat kare, toh sab kuchh achha……. Lekin agar wo tumse thoda sa bhi naraaz ho jaaye, toh tum jee tod koshish karte ho use manane ki…. Ye bhi nonsense hi hai, pyaar nahi. Hai na samrat?"

While nupur spoke all this, samrat carefully listened to her each word. And he had somewhere started to think that whatever nupur said is right. But still he wasn't ready to speak anything.

"jo gehri dosti tumhare aur gunjan ke beech hai na samrat, use pyaar mein badalte der nahi lagti hai. Bas ab tumhe ye ehsaas hona hai, ki jise tum dosti samajh rahe ho, wo dosti nahi, pyaar hai…. Mere pyaare bhai!"

Nupur smiled and sweetly ruffled his hairs, before wishing him good night, and after that she left the room, left samrat in deep thoughts.

Even during the next morning, samrat kept thinking of gunjan, and his feelings for her. While bathing, while getting ready for college, and even at the breakfast table, he could not get gunjan off his mind. His parents wondered at his silence, but nupur could very well understand him, and she smiled secretly to herself. She definitely knew that her words were having some affect on samrat that is why he was behaving awkwardly.

Gunjan was searching for samrat in college. She asked about him to some students, but they also replied that he was not yet at college. She sighed and moved forward, and met dia in her way.

"Itni besabri se kise dhoond rahi ho gunjan?" dia questioned.

"Samrat ko! Pata nahi aaj aane mein itni der kyun laga di usne!" gunjan replied with an upset face.

"Ohoo….. aajkal sammy ke baare mein kuchh zyada hi sochne lagi ho tum!" she teased gunjan.

"dia please! Jaisa tum soch rahi ho waisa kuchh nahi hai….." gunjan said.

Meanwhile, samrat came there with nupur. He smiled slightly at gunjan, and then suddenly felt his heartbeat increased, when she smiled back at him. His eyes widened in surprise, and then he recalled nupur's words, that his heartbeat would definitely increase if gunjan is around him.

"Hey sammy!"

"Hi dia!" samrat replied back.

"Samrat, tumne aaj aane mein itni der kyun kar di?" gunjan asked worriedly, "Pata hai main kab se tumhara wait kar rahi hun…"

"Wait? Kyun?"

"tumne hi toh kaha tha na, ki tumhe koi doubt clear karna hai….. bhool gaye kya?"

"doubt?" samrat murmured to himself in confusion.

Samrat hesitated. For the first time in his life, he felt awkward in front of a girl, and that too his best friend. Gunjan looked up at him in mere confusion.

"Samrat?"

"Oh, haan, doubt…. Hai…. Nahi….. I mean…. Tha…."

"Tum aise hesitate kyun kar rahe ho samrat?" gunjan sighed. "Ek doubt hi toh hai."

"Wo…. Actually…. Kya hai na, aaj…. Last exam hai…. Isliye….. thodi nervousness hai…."

"Nervous aur tum?" she was startled, "Samrat, mujhe toh laga tha ki iss duniya mein sirf main hi nervous ho sakti hun! Par tum itna ghabra kyun rahe ho? Jaise baaki ke exams achhe gaye hain, waise hi ye bhi achha jayega!"

Samrat smiled slightly, though he very well knew that he was nervous not because of exams, but because of his feelings for gunjan. Somehow, he asked his doubt to her, which she clearly explained to him. In the meantime, dia revised her lesson, and nupur kept on looking at samrat and gunjan keenly. She was sure that gunjan too had some special corner for samrat in her heart.

When the bell rang, all the students rushed in the class quickly. Samrat and gunjan too went inside, and after wishing best of luck to each other, they settled themselves on their respective seats to give the last exam.

The happiness of finishing last exam was clearly visible on the faces of all students, as when the bell rang, they all left the classroom with glowing faces, claiming that they would rest and party now! Even benji, uday, dia, and gunjan were happy. Nupur was also happy that now she would give some rest to her hand! But amongst all, samrat was the one who remained quite, and lost in some thoughts.

"samrat? Kya hua?" gunjan asked, looking at him.

'kuchh… bhi toh nahi!" he replied with slight smile.

"toh fir tum aise chup kyun ho? Mujhe toh laga tha ki exams khatam hone ke baad sabse zyada khush tum hi hoge!" she commented.

"arre gunjan, main batata hun." Benji laughed, "ise na exam khatam hone ki itni Khushi hui hai, ki Khushi ke mare bechara khamosh ho gaya hai!"

Everyone laughed at this silly joke of benji, but samrat still remained quite. Gunjan was about to speak something, when sheena approached to them. Dia threw an irritated look at her and muttered something to herself.

"hey gunjan!" she called out, "tumhara exam kaisa hua?"

"bahut achha. Aur tumhara?"

"gunjan, iss bechaari ka exam toh tab hi achha hoga na jab ye answer sheet mein kuchh likh ke aayegi!" uday commented, and giggled with benji.

"shut-up uday!" sheena was annoyed, and then she moved to samrat, "samrat, tumhe apna promise yaad hai na?"

"promise? Kaisa promise?" he looked at her with slight confusion.

"yehi, ki aaj hum dono ek saath akele bahar jaane waale the? I hope tumhe yaad hai!' sheena said, giving more stress on the first sentence and looked at gunjan.

"of course not!" samrat smiled, "in fact, aaj shaam theek 5 baje tum ready rehna, main tumhe pick karne aa jaaunga!"

"Ok then, see you in evening samrat! Bye!"

Sheena smiled and left from there. Samrat too made an excuse and walked away from there, while gunjan remained confused at his behaviour. Dia went towards canteen alongwith uday and benji, while nupur remained back with gunjan.

"kya baat hai gunjan, kya soch rahi ho?" nupur asked.

"di…. Ye…..samrat…. itna….ajeeb kyun behave kar raha hai…." Gunjan asked, "mujhe…kuchh samajh nahi aa raha…."

"gunjan, uski harkatein toh aaj tak main, uski behen nahi samajh paayi, toh tumhe kahan se samjhaun!" nupur laughed.

"pata nahi kya hua hai use…… mujhse….. aise baat kar raha hai… jaise, main koi ajnabee hun…."

"lagta hai mere dhakkan bhai par meri baaton ka asar ho raha hai!" nupur murmured to herself with a naughty smile on her face.

"kuchh kaha aapne di?"

"umm…. Nahi, kuchh nahi." She smiled, "actually gunjan, kal raat maine samrat se kuchh kaha tha, toh I guess ki shayad wo baat sunne ke baad hi samrat aise behave kar raha hai!"

Gunjan was again confused.

"tum itna mat socho gunjan! Waqt aane par tumhe pata chal jayega. Shayad, samrat hi tumse wo baat keh de….. jo use pehle hi keh dena chahiye tha!" nupur said.

"matlab? Main…kuchh samjhi nahi…."

"umm…. Chhodo use, waise bhi, mujhe late ho raha hai…. Mayank mujhe ghar pe lene aane wala tha, agar zara bhi late hui na, toh mujhe dhoondte dhoondte kahin college na aa jaaye!"

"mayank jiju ko mera hello bolna di!" gunjan smiled.

"sure! Ab main jaati hun, bye!"

Nupur smiled and left from there. Gunjan was startled and looked at nupur in confusion, wondering that what might have she said to samrat, that he was behaving so awkwardly with her today!

Since the exams were over, no student was in a mood to attend classes until results were out. So, the college had officially declared holiday for a week, after which the results were expected to be declared.

This one week holiday was long enough for Dia and Benji to watch out the movies which they missed during exams, but these were short for Uday, who still kept on dating several girls to get the perfect one! The three musketeers had their own way of enjoying holiday.

But samrat and gunjan seemed to have least interest in spending time at home. Samrat, who was out of station for a week, missed his friends a lot, especially gunjan. And here, gunjan did not feel like doing anything without samrat. How habitual she became of samrat, that she often wanted to call him late at night, and listen to him as much as her heart wanted. But since the day samrat went out, gunjan never dared to call him, thinking that she would ruin their family get-together. She very well knew that she was missing him badly, his pranks, his voice, his flirting with her, but why she was missing him so much, that surprised her, as no best friend craves to this extent for his/her friend.

And the same went for samrat, who, in spite of being in family get-together, felt that something was missing. Wherever he looked, he saw gunjan, whatever he did, he used to think what would she say at this, what would be she doing now and then, all the time his head was occupied with the thoughts of gunjan. And adding to it, nupur's words kept on ringing in his ears, as if they were trying to convey that there was something more than friendship between him and gunjan. As much as he tried to divert his mind, he thought of her more and more. In this one week, he missed gunjan so much that he could even leave at night, simply to get a glimpse of her. The girl who came in his dream every night, resembled to gunjan till some extent; or no, she completely resembled gunjan. Or, the girl whom he dreamt of was gunjan herself? No, this could not be friendship. No person in this world would call this relation just a friendship. So what was it- Love?
