Chapter-6
Back To The Roots
New Delhi. Geet couldn't believe she was finally back there.
Sitting inside an old worn out taxi car, she wished she had a few more pairs of eyes, to take in everything and anything she could see all around her. She was in the city of her dreams, she was back home. She looked all around. Many things had changed, yet everything felt so familiar. The India Gate, the busy roads, the traffic, and the people- nothing had really changed. This was home, this was where she belonged, she gently whispered to herself. Everything about the city reminded her of her family. The wind, the sky, the clouds and the surroundings of Delhi- all reminded her of them, and the moments she had spent with her family flashed before her eyes. Tears threatened to fill her eyes, while her throat constricted with the sudden gush of emotions. No, Geet. This is not the time to be emotional, she reprimanded herself. You are here for a purpose, and that is what you are supposed to concentrate on. Crying over what was lost years ago wouldn't get you anywhere, she told herself. She had strived a lot to reach here, and now was the time to pursue her dreams. And nothing could stop her now, she decided.
"Pehli baar Dilli aayi ho madam?" Geet's trail of thoughts was broken by a sudden enquiry from the Taxi driver.
"Nahi bhaisaab. Main toh yahi ki hoon. Dus saal pehle shehar chodkar gayi thi. Abhi wapis aayi hoon, naukri ke silsile mein. Waise bhaisaab, Bangla Sahib kitni door hain yahan se?"
"Zyada door nahin hai. Yahin kuch bees minute lagega shayad. Jaana hai?"
"Jee chaliye. Wahin se hokar chalte hain." The Gurudwara was closely connected with her childhood. Her mother had always been a frequent visitor to the Gurudwara, and she had visited the place many times in her childhood with her family. The place held a lot of memories, and Geet thought it would be a nice start to the new phase of her life, revisiting the sacred place which held a lot of bitter-sweet memories of her childhood.

Sitting on the topmost of the steps that led to the holy sarovar of the Gurudwara , Geet felt oddly at peace. She had always loved visiting this place with her mother, and she could almost feel her presence in the surroundings of this sacred place. Thankfully, the crowd wasn't that huge today, and that she felt was a huge relief. Her mind was calm now, and she felt fresh and awake. Coming here was certainly a good idea, she thought as she closed her eyes feeling a cool breeze passing by, stroking her hair gently, just like her mother used to do when she was a little kid.
"Ah!" Geet jerked awake from her thoughts hearing a sudden yelp of pain from nearby. She looked around to see what had happened. She saw an old lady, of about seventy-five or so, lying on the ground behind her, trying hard to get up but in vain. She was dressed in an off-white sari, and Geet could tell that she was from a respected and mostly probably, very rich family. Geet got up quickly and rushed to the lady's side for help.
"Here, hold my hand Ma'am. Are you ok? You didn't injure yourself, did you?" Geet enquired as she gently helped the lady up.
"Thank You beta. Well, I think I just sprained my ankle a little. Could you please take me to my grandson over there? See, he's standing over there talking on the phone." The lady answered, her arms pointed towards a young man standing slightly away, with his back facing them. The man was talking in a business-like manner on his phone. Weird, thought Geet, as she supported the lady and slowly walked towards him. What kind of a person attended business calls at a place of worship?
"He's like that only, my grandson. Always a workaholic." The lady told Geet as if she had read her mind.
"How did you know what I was thinking?" Geet asked shocked and slightly embarrassed.
"Well, you have a very expressive face dear... And I must say, beautiful too. And by the way, I am Savithri Devi. And that's my grandson Maan Singh Khurana."
"Maan Singh Khurana? You mean the chairman of Marvel Constructions? Oh My God!"
"Yes, the same. Why? What happened?" Savithri Devi asked, slightly amused at the shocked expression on Geet's face.
"Well...um.. I am kind of attending an interview at Marvel tomorrow. Actually I just came from Bangalore today for that."
"Oh really? That's great. All the best dear... I hope you get the job. What's your name by the way?"
"Oh Thank you Ma'am. And yeah, I'm Geet."
"That's such a beautiful name. Oh, here we are. Thank you so much beta. Come, I'll introduce you to your would be boss. Um.. Maan, beta please come and help me."
" Just a minute Dadi. Let me just finish-" Maan trailed off, as he turned around to see his grandmother limping towards him, supported by a young girl he didn't recognize.
"Dadi! What's this? Why are you limping?" exclaimed Maan, while moving forwards to help his grandmother.
"Calm down Maan. I just tripped over the steps there and sprained my ankle a little. And this very sweet girl agreed to help me get here. Oh well Geet, meet my grandson Maan. Maan, this is Geet. " Savithri Devi answered, looking at Geet with a smile on her face.
Maan turned to look at the girl now, noticing her face for the first time. Beautiful, was the first word that came to his mind. She was very fair, and her eyes... They surprised him with their depth. They appeared to be pleasant and smiling, still he could feel a tinge of melancholy somewhere in them. There was hope, sadness and even a little nervousness. How could someone's eyes show these many emotions at once, he wondered. And her lips...
"Maan, don't you think you should thank her instead of just standing there and staring at her face?" Savithri Devi asked, amused at her grandson's mesmerized face.
"Huh? Oh, yeah. Um.. Thank You for helping my Dadi..erm..Geet.." Maan said, snapping out of his trance. Gosh, what the hell was I thinking! Get a grip on yourselves dude, he reprimanded himself.
"Oh. No problem, Mr. Khurana...No need to thank me. I am glad I could help." Said Geet, slightly embarrassed, and red in face due to his strong gaze that seemed to refuse to leave her. Somehow, the look in his eyes made her nervous.
"Actually I should go now, my taxi is waiting... I have to reach somewhere before it gets too dark"
"Oh, well... ok then dear, hope to see you again." Savithri Devi said, gently holding her hand. "And best of luck with your interview beta. I'm sure you'll do well."
"Thank you Ma'am. And bye, Mr. Khurana." Geet whispered, as she turned around and slowly walked away towards the taxi.
"Such a sweet girl, don't you think Maan?"
Maan merely nodded as if in a trance, his eyes still tracing the path she walked away, before he jerked out of his trance and said quickly. "Let's go Dadi. Its getting late. I have some work in the office."
Savithri Devi chuckled gently at her grandson's embarrassment. I should definitely meet this girl again now, she decided, as she took Maan's hand and slowly walked towards their car.
