Part 19
Sid felt a slight disturbance in the air by his right ear and that's all it took for him to break away from the trance. His hands dropped he took a step breath all the while trying to catch his breath. He didn't know what it was that caused that shift in air but it's what he needed to come back to reality. He was still confused as to what was going on. He watched the woman standing in front of him and took a little pleasure in the fact that she was just as disoriented as he was. It might be petty but he was glad when he saw the disappointment flash in her eyes. He waited to see what she was going to say, all the while chiding himself for almost making one of the biggest mistakes of his life. This isn't a dream, Sid this is real life. You can't hug her and pretend everything is going to be all right, that you are simply meeting her again after the end of a long day. That you can hold her hand and walk together towards the train to head home for a quiet meal and an evening on the couch. Sid in real life you most certainly can hug her, you can even attempt to hold her hand but she will always be looking over her shoulder, looking into the past. That past that no matter what you do, no matter what she says is always with her. But what in the world is she doing here? After all these years, why is she here, in the states, in Houston? If she didn't want to meet me, then why would she come to the one place she knew I would be. No matter how hard Sid tried to fight it he couldn't help that stubborn flame of hope from igniting deep inside of him. No matter how much he wanted to claim he was indifferent his heart refused to stay numb around her.
Riddhima was startled back to cold reality fast. The second Sid's arms dropped from her back and he took a step back she felt the warmth and security that had been comforting her disappear instantly. She knew she had no right to crave such a thing, to regret the loss of it, but she couldn't help it. Took a deep breath in and tried to catch her breath while trying to decipher what had happened, what was about to happen, and what wasn't going to happen. She couldn't stray her eyes from his face, she tried to read them but as always his face was unreadable. She just needed one inkling that he wanted something from her, she'd take anything even if it was cold cordialness. For a second she thought she saw a flame of hope in his eyes, the one that used to burn so brightly that he was able to brighten the darkest corners of her heart during what she thought were the darkest days of her life. Little did she know that those days were nothing in comparison to what the future had in store for her.
Avni watched these two people who seemed so perfect for each, who seemed like old soulmates meeting, and yet acted as though they had never met, didn't know who the other was. She knew that it was her action that had disrupted whatever was about to ensue between them, that if she hadn't reacted without thought this meeting would have probably had a completely different ending. She didn't know what to feel, relief that she had stopped what was about to happen from happening, or regret for the same reason. She was so damn confused and it was killing her. It's hard to know what to do when you don't even know if you have the right to speak. So she did the only thing she could do, what she had been doing, and that was to watch this scene unfold hoping all parties would remain unscatched.
Sid wasn't sure what he was going to say or what he was going to do about meeting her here, now. He was completely consumed by the woman standing in front of him, and yet he felt a faint source of strength coming from behind. He knew no matter what happened with the woman standing before him, he wasn't going a be left broke and alone, for there was something strong and steady standing behind him. He tried to think of what to say, what he had wanted to say all these times he had imagined running into her. Sometimes they were words of forgiveness asking her if she wanted to try again. Sometimes they were words of goodbye, once and for all closing that door. Sometimes they were words of anger. And most times they were simply wordless encounters where he walked away without saying anything, simply passing by as though they were strangers simply walking down the same path in opposite directions. Sid took a deep breath in planning to do exactly that, he took a step forward and to the left of her planning on walking by. He knew the person behind him would follow, she wouldn't ask questions, but would simply support him in a moment that not even she knew how much her strength was needed.
Riddhima continued to absorb him, she couldn't keep her mind from going through all the possible outcomes of this encounter. She wondered if it would end like her dreams, where he would forgive her, tell her he wanted to move forward from this point and then take her hand and simply turn and lead her towards a new life, with him. She knew it was insane to hope for such a thing, after all he had given it to her twice before, but she so desperately hoped for a third chance. After all, they did say third time's a charm. She nearly scoffed at her unbelievable thoughts. Then she wondered if this encounter would go the route of her nightmares, where he would yell and tell her to get lost from his life forever. For she knew if that's what he asked of her she would abide, for she had already caused him enough heart ache and that was least she owed him. And then that thought that stayed locked deep in her heart came free, the one she always knew was there, but had never let out for she knew she wouldn't be able to bare that outcome. It was the chilliest of them all. It was the one where she would find out that she didn't even matter. That seeing her no longer evoked any emotions, not happiness, not forgiveness, not anger, and not disappointment. But rather no emotions. She knew she had no right but she prayed to God not that this outcome would result in her and Sid's reunion, but only that he wouldn't be able to show indifference towards her.
Avni knew what Sid was going to do the second he took the step towards the woman she wanted to stop him, she had no clue who that woman was but she wanted to keep him from closing the door on her forever. She was about call out his name, to stop him but once again wasn't sure if she had the right to. So she did the only thing she could she silently took a step forward too following him.
Sid continued to take the steps that he needed to get by her, it felt as though with every step he took past her he was taking a step towards moving forward. That with each inch he progressed forward the door to his past inched closed. He was now shoulder to shoulder to her directly next to her. Two people who shared a rocky past, had overcome obstacles not even they knew were in store for them. Now standing in the same place, next to each other like so many years ago when they stood next to each other, facing the same direction unsure of what the future held, only knowing they were going towards the same destination of embarking on this life together. But this time, they stood facing opposite directions, they were no longer looking towards the same future, life had broken them and it had left them on paths leading towards completely opposite destinations. Riddhima wanted to stretch out her arm and stop him, she knew what each of those steps meant, she knew that with each one he was cutting the bond that had held them together. That if he took one more step he would be free of her forever. And yet, she couldn't do it, she couldn't stop him, oh sure the words of begging were there but she refused to keep him from doing what was best for him. So she stood silently she closed her eyes, held her breath and prayed that he would show some emotion, whether it was simply a flickering of his gaze towards her, a parting shot, or even a goodbye.
