Chapter Six: He's a Burmese Python

I remember my laughter as I faced the door, filled with the arrogance of youth that I knew best. I was consumed with that brutal confidence that told me the blood seeping through the doorway was fake and that she was up to mischief yet again.

Maybe she hoped I would scream, burst open the door in an attempt to save her from a ghoul and make an utter fool of myself.

She forgot though, I was Maan Singh Khurana. I wouldn't fall easily into her traps.

That night I calmly opened the door, sporting a knowing smile on my face, hands on my hips...I entered only to set my eyes on a sight that would haunt me forever.

I should have screamed.

I should have broken that door down.

I should have saved her.

I didn't do any of that.

So instead, on that vile night...

I simply watched her soul, snap.

***

"Does that feel any better?" Alexandra asked sheepishly, watching Maan place the ice-pack in between his legs.

"Yesss..." He hissed out and glared at her murderously. "To think I thought this day couldn't get worse... to think I was happy to see you!"

"Aha! There lies your mistake good Sir!" She chirruped, sitting down next to him on the sofa and looking around at the inside of a very white outhouse noticing it had been repainted since she had last been here. "It's no longer day but night! Ten Twenty-Three to be exact." She then scowled at him, "Plus, which deity told you to get in between my foot and that escort-adverts nose anyway?!"

"Her name is Sasha!"

"The deity...?" Alexandra feigned confusion and memory loss.

"No, t-the...the escort advert!" Maan cleared reluctantly. He noticed a small twitch on her lips, as if she was dying not to laugh. "You're finding this funny Veer Singh!?" He gestured wildly to his bruised lower region.

"Well..." Alexandra picked up a beer can from the six-pack on the floor struggling with the smile that was threatening to turn into wild laughter. "Ahem...It wasn't exactly part of the plan..."

"There was a plan?!" Maan widened his eyes, shaking his head when she offered him a can also.

"There's always a plan...I mean err, did you see the doorman's face? It was a sight!" Alexandra quickly diverted his attention, not wanting to divulge all her secrets.

He groaned, covering his face with his hand. "Alex...how could you..." He shuddered at the humiliating memory. Alexandra vicious kick back at the office had left him unable to move...or speak. Unfortunately to make matters worse, his Head Architect bore witness to the embarrassment and had then proceeded to run for the lifts as if her hair was on fire thus leaving him to the merciless Alexandra Veer Singh. Further misery knocked on his door when Alex had impatiently pulled him onto her back, carried him down to the car park past the astonished doorman, into her Ferrari and drove them to the outhouse and then piggy-backed him right past the night-watch man.

"Alexandra...you have ridiculously strong thighs." He could almost envision his carefully built reputation shattering like glass around him.

"I'll take that as your thanks you snivelling ingrate." She snorted, obviously pleased with her handy work and sipped at her cold beer.

"Thanks...thanks?!" Maan barely restrained himself from strangling her.

"Hey! My thighs may be strong but my back is NOT your playground! So yes, after all that trouble you can't bring yourself to say ONE WORD?!"

"Phir kya!" Maan threw the icepack across the room, his anger overcoming his pain. "Tumari aarthi utharu?!"

Alexandra sneered at him and looked up at the ceiling. "Why in the name of all that is unholy do you want me to help this belligerent WARTHOG Daddy? Why!?" The insult earned her a sharp whack across the back of her head, the hit more painful due to the rings he loved to wear. "Oye!"

Maan shrugged his shoulders at her and calmly looked over his hand and twisted the gold bands on his fingers. "What? I didn't do anything." He shook his head under her hard blue stare and smiled.

"So I just imagined that hit did I?"

"Payback Alex-puthar, payback..." Maan's smile widened and he leaned back into the sofa, a bitter bliss settling in his chest. If Alexandra was around, she'd keep him busy with her nonsense enough that he would never have to remember G-...No. He would not say her name...never again.

"Geet." Alexandra chose that very moment to say the name she knew would cause her friend to go into ballistic rage, but that's why she chose the moment. The very moment in which all his defences were down, when his arms were open to trust was when she struck. She watched his smile fall, the shadow in his eyes form and the muscle in his jaws tick. "Let's talk about her Maan."

***

She found the source of her annoyance in the living room, there on the wall sat a large grey clock that had refused to let her sleep for the past three hours. Her feet shuffled on the cold wooden floor and rubbed over each other to gather warmth.

Geet Handa was not pleased; her large brown eyes glared at the ticking and tocking device only to find it stare back at her impassively until she sighed and sat down on the sofa and looked around her new cold and bare apartment.

For the first time in her life, she was truly alone.

There were no other Handa's here, chasing her with large sharp talwars and roaring for her death. No Pinky wandering around the other rooms in search for secret night time snacks.

No sounds of Pinky's Papa snoring away gently.

The rustle of Daadima's sari...

His purposeful and angry footsteps...

All agonisingly gone...

Geet inhaled, a hard lump formed in her throat and she struggled to keep it there. "Babaji." She clenched her eyes shut and counted to ten, willing herself desperately not to cry.

Not this time.

There was no point in her tears now.

She'd win this fight.

Alexandra had promised her that.

***

"So basically it's your entire fault." Alexandra murmured, calmly lazing against a half broken chair its fourth leg in one hand and a Kingfisher beer can in the other. After she had explained to him that Daadima had vaguely told her about his 'mangetar', all she had to do was wait whilst Maan erupted. At first he went around the outhouse, kicking and breaking the furniture and had then sank back down next to her...and let it out. As usual.

"What?!" Maan turned around, kicking away a ripped cushion from the sofa to glare at Alexandra. "How did you come to that conclusion? She left me. She lied...she...she...it was all her fault!" He threw up his arms in frustration.

Alexandra stood up; her arms folded and face emotionless. If for a second Maan thought she knew something....anything, the game would be up. "Erm, well. Let's see...you acted like a goon and told her to **** off every time she wanted to talk to you, so basically she did that and then probably decided there's no point saying a word to you since you don't listen to her anyways!" She held up a hand when Maan opened his mouth to interrupt, "You're probably gonna ask how I can say that. We both know my past Maan. I know what it's like to be pregnant...and alone. That girl was alone; you can't just say she was with another man when you just said it yourself! Her family wanted her dead and no man stood up to protect her." She rolled her eyes at his disbelieving expression.

"I refuse to believe this my fault." Maan narrowed his eyes at her, not liking where this particular conversation was going.

"Well...duh. You're Maan Singh Khurana! It's always your fault!"

Maan bristled and strode past her. "You know what?! This was stupid, telling you it's just always such a stupid thing to do..." He found himself being yanked and pulled back.

"I'm not finished." Alexandra tsked, pointing a sharp finger at him. "If you're gonna waste my night on whining about your love life when I can be drinking my arse off then I suggest you listen to my advice so I can get on with my beer cans."

Maan pushed a hand through his hair. "Fine. Jaldi karo." There was no point asking her to button it, she'd only talk louder. The best thing to do was let her babble on and then pretend to understand, yawn and head to bed where he could pace out his rug. It was like battling a young Daadima.

Alexandra started circling him, pretending as if she was adding things up in her mind. "So she came to Delhi...alone after her Slitheen family of hers tried to slay her you say?"

"Yes..." Maan had to roll his eyes at her Doctor Who reference; the woman was still obsessed with that blithering show?

"From then you believe feelings were developed and your pathetic chat up lines obviously didn't work, so you masterminded the ol' Fake Fianc shizzang. Then when you returned to Hoshiapur you became friends and then...erm, saved her again? When did you become Popeye the Sailor Man?" Alexandra shook her head. "Nevermind. So all in all...you were her only one true friend here in Delhi when she had no one else, but she didn't voice anything to suggest she believed the so called engagement was true."

"Hmm." Maan had a sinking suspicion he wouldn't like Alexandra's 'advice'. "Will you tell me why you're taking that you've-messed-up-again-Maan tone of voice with me...?"

"Erm, because you have." Alexandra gave him a droll look. "I'm sorry, maybe I have it wrong it's just that this girl Geet? She owed you no explanation. YOU fell for her, YOU employed her to do that mangetar job and it was YOU who was hitting on her. SHE didn't voice any desire to be with you but she did desire to be your friend and as a flipping friend, you failed."

Maan frowned and felt his inner defences rise up sharply. "How dare you Alex? I did more than what most friends would do for her!"

"Oh yeah?" Alexandra moved up to him nose-to-nose. "She told you she was PREGNANT. Did you even bother to enquire who had knocked her up? Who'd left her to fend off her family? Why was she alone in Delhi? For all you know she could have been raped...which would be understandable as to why her family wanted her dead. When she told you she might have expected a friends concern...but you treated her just like her family did, no wonder she didn't speak to you today Maan. Who would after that much rejection?"

Maan felt his body turn to lead at her words, each one like a hot knife in his heart. "NO." He held up a hand almost begging Alexandra to stop talking. He felt as if lava was rising up him instead of bile...blistering his insides. He took two steps back and landed on the rather beaten sofa. "T-there has to be another explanation. Tum janthi bhi ho tum kya keh rahi ho?! You're just saying that because of what happened to YOU!" His face contorted at his last words; they had slipped out before he could stop them. Maan looked up at her regretfully, feeling as if he was failing in every corner of his life lately. To his surprise, she simply carried on drinking that terrible liquid as if she hadn't even heard him.

"Yup." Alexandra shrugged and pretended not to hear his last sentence; she drained the last drop of her beer and threw the empty can over her shoulder. "I do. The thing is you don't know whether my theory is right or wrong. The truth it comes down to is that she's gone. However, the most important question in all of this is... whatchya gonna DO about it?" On that note she spun around, searching the debris on the floor for the rest of her beer. "YOU LOST MY CANS?!"

***

Across the world, each country shrieked one name at him.

Each woman, black, brown or white had only one accusation on her lips.

Each room on Earth was a burning white airport.

No matter where he ran, there they were throwing his truth at his face like mud.

Everyone was Geet and he was their sinner, Dev.

The tunnels...they were dark, filthy, clammy... but safe. If he could only hide...but those bright blue eyes, they came from the end of the tunnel...searing at him, focused only on him. By God, they were so bright and so haunting he felt his skin blaze up and melt. He looked down at his rotting bones and screamed at the revulsion he had for himself...screamed...and screamed whilst he wasted away until he was all that he was worth.

Nothing.

He shot up in bed, perspiration bathing his body whilst he shuddered and racked out hard guilt ridden sobs. Dev Khurana pulled off his duvet and checked his skin and gasped out at the sight of clean caramel unblemished skin. He breathed out a sigh of relief and let his head fall back onto his pillow, hot tears sliding off the corner of his eyes.

In the night and in the darkness of his room, all he could hear was the agonising tick...and then the tock.

Time was running out.

***

For some ungodly reason, Maan Singh Khurana found himself sitting on the garden wall overlooking the flower beds to Khurana Mansion, next to his greatest friend (or foe depending on your tolerance for the British) Alexandra Veer Singh, both of them staring glumly at the full moon before them and sharing a large bottle of Zinfandel Rose.

Maan passed her a surly glance, "We know why I'm glaring at him! He put all those weird ideas about Geet in my head but what's your problem?" It was nearly two in the morning, yet neither of them seemed willing to go to sleep. He was lost in the world of Geet, debating and contemplating whether he should follow Alexandra's advice and find her and even if he wanted to....how?

Alexandra hiccupped, the bottle currently in her hands. Her tongue felt loose in her mouth, and the inner depths of her still-sober mind were shrieking warnings to her. The last thing she wanted was to verbally vomit out all her secrets. "Nothing..." She handed the bottle to him and brought up her knee, her chin resting against its bare surface. "Have you decided yet?"

"Alex, she's gone. Where should I even look? She could be anywhere." Maan sipped at the red wine, his earlier protests of not drinking had given away an hour ago under Alexandra's persuasive gaze.

"Point." Even though her outer self was dealing with Maan she was actually battling her own inner turmoil, her own memories. "I erm...what if you just, you know...sent someone to Hoshiapur. From what you told me, too many questions are unanswered in her story. Whoever you send will come back with all those answers. A small place like that likes to gossip y'know?"

Maan nodded in agreement, "Alright...I'll do it first thing tomorrow." It was actually a better idea, he wouldn't regret wasting energy on her if her truth was less than satisfactory for him and if it turned out he was wrong about Geet...nothing would stop him finding her. Now that Geet's issue was sorted, he frowned at Alexandra noticing her tense form. "What is wrong with you?" He'd been so lost in his own problems; he'd failed to even pay attention to Alexandra. After all, she'd returned after six years and all he'd done is whine about his life. Maan couldn't help but feel a little guilty; maybe his earlier comment on her pregnancy had upset her more than she showed? "You're angry at me aren't you? I didn't mean it Alex...woh...gusse mein nikal gya."

"It's fine. I'm over it." Alexandra shrugged, waving her hand lazily. "Let's not talk about what's gone alright."

Maan nodded, realising that a change of subject was needed. "So I accidently came across your Sumbawan photo shoot on Google the other day...Quite the erm...model you were wearing." He deliberately put a strong dose of 'disappointment' in his tone of voice.

Alexandra grinned at him cheekily, "Ah yes, Michael?"

"You were naked! He barely covered your...thingies!" He gestured wildly at her chest.

"That was the general idea..."

"He was huge."

"He's a Burmese Python...!"

Maan grimaced, he frequently Googled her and sometimes regretted doing so. "Alex, kapre tho pahen liye hote! I had to block all the sites with that photo on Daadima's laptop, or else she'd be in hospital right now planning your Swayamvar!" He hated her nude shoots, not that she ever listened. In the past six years, all his protesting e-mails had gotten ignored. She had only kept communication open with Daadima, a fact he tried not to dwell on.

"Kyun...? Achi nahi lagthi?" She frowned and stuck her head down the neckline of her top, wondering if anything was starting to sag. She was only twenty two for crying out loud.

Maan groaned and yanked her hair, pulling her head out. "You'd look better in a sari or something, trust me."

Alexandra shuddered, "Haan aur phir Daadima mehre saat pehre karwa dethi!"

"Is that why you do this...?" Maan frowned. "Tum shaadi nahi karna chaati...isliye karthi ho yeh sab?"

"Aur kya..." Alexandra yawned. "Whoever Daadima chooses will be decent, who would marry someone so indecent? This way, she'll never find some goody-two shoes to pester me." She cackled and rubbed her hands together, obviously pleased at her master-idea. "Waise bhi, woh Python kuch zyada hi handsome tha..."

Maans lips twitched, amused at her shenanigans and also at her accent. It came out more when she was drunk. "You sound like one of those British villains in those b-grade movies from the sixties." If Alexandra thought Daadima would give up at the sight of a few nude shoots, she had another thing coming.

Alexandra laughed tossing her head back, "Haannn! Aur thum? You sound like Apu from the Simpsons! Desi Babu, English Maam!" She chortled at her own joke and the mix-up of the movie title name.

"Why did you take so long to come back to India?" Maan asked suddenly, eyeing her warily. There were still so many questions he wanted to ask, if only she would answer them in a straightforward manner for once.

Alexandra froze; the bottle paused at her lips whilst her cloudy mind digested his question. She then nodded, handed him the wine and before Maan could stop her, pulled out a penknife from the back pocket of her shorts and slashed her own palm.

"Alexandra!" Maan grabbed her bleeding hand and slapped the other until she dropped the penknife. "What the hell was that for?!" He pulled out his handkerchief and quickly bound her hand.

Alexandra pulled her hand away, yanking of the handkerchief and raised her hands up in the moonlight. "Time lagtha hai Maan.... Heal karne kiliye time lagtha hai...Samjhe budhu?" Whilst one hand bled profusely, the other was scarred from the incident Maan desperately wished they could both forget. She rolled her eyes at him. The wound didn't actually hurt her; she was used to physical pain. All Alexandra wanted to show was the contrast between her injuries.

"I should put you in a mental institute." Maan chastised furiously, forcefully binding her hand again. He didn't want to look at the white lines covering the palm of her left hand. "What did you even get from living alone like that? We would have looked after you here; I still don't understand why you didn't come back with me."

"Sometimes it's just easier to be completely alone than be with others and still feel alone, hurts just that little less. It took time Maan...to come to terms. Anyways, I'm done and okay with my past now. I think..." Alexandra gave him a sheepish grin. "It's been three years since I've been modelling now s-"

"Exactly, three years! Why not come back then when you were obviously so much better?!" Maan couldn't help but feel aggravated, all these years away from her without her guidance had changed him...no not changed, worsened him. There had been no one to make him laugh and to pull him out of his shell every once in a while.

"Because I knew you weren't over it yet...you still aren't, you still look at me with that freaking pitying look on your face and I don't want to be a victim alright!" Alexandra retorted angrily before she could stop herself. "I'm a Veer Singh damnit! Screw us for all you're worth but we'll never be the victims!"

Maan clenched his jaw. "I'm sorry." He bit out, looking away. She was right; he had pitied her all this time. His secret checks on her every year, the checks he did on her foreign friends and colleagues, the names of the people she sat with on the train every Monday morning...like a crazed older brother, he did what he could despite her constantly proving she didn't need him. He pushed back his hair, and then noticed a flash in the sky. "Oi. Look. Why don't you make a wish?" It was a silly request; he knew Alexandra didn't trust such notions.

"Hum wish nahi kar sakthe..." Alexandra smiled bitterly at him. "Jab hum hudh aik tootha tara hai, phir kya faida?"

"Kya matlab?" Maan asked confused, since when did Alexandra become a falling star?

"Haan...aur kya?" Alexandra threw the now empty bottle at the sky in the direction of the star. "People like me...we only know how to fall, and we keep falling until someone else's wish comes true."

Maan was now fully disturbed at Alexandra's behaviour but before he could say anything Alexandra abruptly got up, a sudden defiance in her heavy lidded eyes.

"Enough!" She yelled. "I'm a Veer Singh! Veer Singh damnit!"

Maan hurried to get up, his shoes slipping on the icy wall. "Alex...I think everyone knows who you are by now...so erm, let's go inside!" He decided that it was indeed enough; he'd throw her over his shoulder if he had to.

"No!" Alexandra shrugged him off then turned on him, jabbing him hard in the chest with a sharp finger. "What are you?" She breathed in tightly, feeling woozy.

"Er...Khurana?"

"Exactly! A Veer Singh and Khurana...sitting here, so ******* defeated like two depression ki murtis?! That's it! Y-you're gonna find your Barbie Maan!"

Maan grabbed onto her shoulders, glad that she was at least talking positively but worried she was going to collapse. "Okay, anything you say Alex-Puthar...let's go inside now." Unfortunately Alexandra wasn't finished.

"And I!" Alexandra put her hands on her hips, glaring at the sky. "I'm gonna go get laid! Where's that useless brother of yours?" She looked around half expecting Dev to materialise in front of her.

Maan put a hand on his forehead, feeling a brutalising headache coming on. "He got married remember..." He whispered back, struggling between two thoughts.

The first thought: How much he rued the day Naintara came into their home. She had spoiled all his plans of getting Alex and Dev tied in holy matrimony so he could successfully keep an eye on them both.

The second more worrisome thought: How many times did his nutcase of a friend get 'laid' to ease off her problems?!

"Oh yeah...Nakul chalega?" She asked, as if Maan's opinion on who she bedded was of high importance.

"Nakul?" Maan looked at her incredulously, rolled his eyes and opened his arms. "Kyu nahin! Bagwaan tumari Jodi salamat ra-" Somehow he found himself standing on air, then falling and then feeling wet grass tickle his nose.

Alexandra watched him land ungracefully and sniggered and hooted at him from the wall. "How's the grass mate?"

"Wet...!" Maan growled, struggling in the mud until he was standing up. "I can't believe I slipped!"

***

Annnnd a teensy bit from my next chapter:
"W-were you just kissing her?!"

"Erm...I was until you interrupted."

"What?!" He widened his eyes. "Why-why....why would you do that?"

"You really worry me sometimes..."
