Part 146

A: Hello,

Bua handed the cell to Akshat and he spoke up "dad, mama kahan hai? Ani kaisa hai?"

A: Akshu? Kiske cell se baat kar rahe ho?

Ak: Bua nani ke cell se.

A: oh! Achcha. Haan Ani zara better hai. So raha hai, aur mama bhi soyi hai. Maine uska phone silent pe rakha tha, isliye time laga uthane mein. Tum kya kar rahe ho?

Ak: Hum log play station khel rahe hain.

Armaan could gauge from his voice that he wasn't very happy. "Akshu tum theek to ho na? I'm sorry beta main tumhe apne paas nahi rakh paaya. Bus aur do din phir tum hamare paas aa sakte ho."

AK: I'm fine dad, aap tension mat lo. Love you."

A: I too love you shona.

Akshat started laughing and asked "dad aapne mujhe shona kaha? Mama ki tarah?"

Armaan also laughed and said "haan, tum mama ko bahut miss kar rahe ho na, isliye. Aur jab woh uthegi main usey kahoonga ke tumhe phone karle. OK?

Soon Ani woke up. He was hungry and crying. Riddhima also woke up hearing him cry.

A: Ani mum mum khayega?

Ani pointed to his mouth saying "wooo"

A: dad ne dawai lagai na? Woo theek ho gaya. Ab Ani mum mum kha sakta hai.

He shook his head clinging to his mama for the feed. Armaan asked Riddhima, "usey bukaar to nahi hai. Can I give him some icecream?" Hearing the word icecream he stopped feeding and instantly turning towards his dad said "Ani ikeam" Armaan smiled at him and said "theek hai, main le aata hoon."

R: Armaan better ask Dr. Kelkar if it's ok.

A: I'll do that, don't worry.

Armaan called up Atul, got Dr. Kelkar's number and spoke to her. She told him there were no restrictions about the food. Only it shouldn't be spicy or oily. That would cause irritation to the child. Anyways she asked him to thaw the icecream a little before feeding it. Armaan did likewise.

A: alley wah, tu to mela shona beta hai, sab kuch khapan (Ani's word for khatam) kal diya.

When he used the word 'shona' he remembered Akshat, and asked Riddhima to talk to him. When Riddhima called the landline at Joshi house, she was told that Bua, Mini, Gappu and the boys had gone to the nearby park. She was disappointed, but Armaan called Bua's number from his cell and handed it to Riddhima.

She was surprised hearing bua's voice when she enquired about Ani's health. Riddhima told her that he had taken some icecream. She suggested that Riddhima should powder some sago (sabudhana) and make porridge of it and add some fruit pulp to it, after cooling it. It would be like icecream only but more nutritious. Riddhima thanked her for her suggestion and thought after all she had brought up so many children in the last 30 years. With her experience, she was surely the right person to guide her.

Then Akshat came on the line. He was extremely happy just hearing his mama's voice. Bua was watching his expressions and smiling to herself. 'Yeh to bilkul Riddhima par gaya hai' she said to herself. The most innocent and lovable kid who loved and respected his near and dear ones. Of course Armaan was also a very affectionate person, but not such a simpleton as this one. Ani was more like Armaan, cute and naughty. She was sure he would also grow up to be a wonderful person like his dad. She felt as proud as any mother would, as she was no less than a mother to Riddhima, though a foster one.

She was just 18 when she had joined the Sanjeevani orphanage. She had lost her parents in her childhood and had been brought by her uncle and aunt. She had been more of a maid to them than a niece. Dr. Shashank had interacted with her when her uncle had been admitted in Sanjeevani. He had understood her predicament and to save her from their atrocities, he had offered her a job in the orphanage. Today she was glad that she had made the right decision then, much against her uncle's and aunt's wishes.

At that tender age she became a mother to so many kids. Of course the kids used to call her bua, but she was no less than a mother to them because they had no one else to love them, except her. She had been so involved with them that she had missed the opportunity of finding a suitable life partner. But she never regretted it. The children's unconditional love was sufficient to last her for this lifetime. And seeing each of her children settle in life, gave her immense pleasure especially if they were blessed such adoring husbands like Armaan.

She was brought back to the present by Akshat, when he handed back her cell saying "Thank you bua nani". She smiled seeing that his face was glowing with joy. "baat karli mama se?" she asked and with a sweet smile he proudly said "haan". She pulled him on her lap asking "Apni mama se kitna pyaar karte ho?" He stretched out his arms sidewise as far as he could even moving them a little towards the back to show how much and said "itna". She laughed out at his action and shook her head.

Then to tease him she asked "Kisse jyaada pyaar karte ho? Dad se ya mama se? At once he diplomatically answered "Dono se equal" making her laugh once again. So he was in a good mood when they went back to the Joshi house. Even his nani and nanu noticed it, but they thought the visit to the park had cheered him up. His mausaji offered him some chikki and as he bit into it, his top front tooth came off with it. Seeing his mouth bleed Anshul shouted "Akshat tumhare mooh se khoon aa raha hai."

Ani's condition had improved slightly the next day. He was able to have the porridge but dreaded the medicine which was given for application. When his dad put on his gloves he understood what was coming and refused to even open his mouth. (Lekin woh to uska baap tha.) He opened the baby's mouth when he was fast asleep and applied the medicine. No doubt he woke up and yelled but the work was done. Then the same person who hurt him, held him close, showered him with kisses and cooed him back to sleep.

When Armaan went looking for Riddhima, he found her busy grinding something in the mixer. On enquiring he came to know that she was making idli batter.

R: Ani loves idli, so I thought I would entice him with that, for breakfast tomorrow. His stomach doesn't fill with just my feed now. He needs to have something solid. Too much of sago porridge is also not good, it might cause him constipation.

A: What time is Ani due for his next feed?

R: he just had the porridge na? He shouldn't wake up for another 2-3 hours at least. He didn't sleep in the afternoon either. Why do you ask?

A: I'll ask Atul to come and pick you. Go and spend sometime with Akshat. He's missing you very much.

R: Armaan but the infection.

A: Have a bath and leave straight away. Go hurry up. Use the downstairs guest room bath. I'll clean up here.

She stared at him for a minute. He raised his eyebrows to ask why? She spontaneously hugged him saying "you are such a darling." Only then she reaslised her hand was smeared with the dough which was now all over his shirt. She pulled out and seeing the state of his clothes, bit her tongue. He pretended to be angry and when she held her ear to apologize he kissed her nose and said "I'll change but you'll have to wash this shirt when you return. Go now."

R: Don't call up jeeju. I'll drive. I'll give all of them a surprise.

Armaan nodded and started washing the mixer. She was also missing her son very much. She ran upstairs to get her clothes and kissed the little one on her way out whispering "Main tumhare anna se milkar jaldi aati hoon, tum dad ko tang mat karna." By the time she got ready, Armaan had also changed and also called for a taxi. When she stood at the doorway looking hesitatingly at him he blew her a kiss and mouthed "Go". She caught the kiss and returned him one before waving out to him and leaving.

Hearing the doorbell ring Akshat said "main dekhta hoon." They were all huddled up watching the latest comedy flick on DVD, in which he was least interested. Seeing her at the door he screamt out aloud "mama" and hugged her tight. She picked him up in her arms and kissed him. Before she could walk in, he got down from her arms. Everyone's eyes had turned towards the door hearing his scream.

Anjie: Arrey Ridzi tum?

P: apne bete ko dekhe bagair raha nahi hoga ussey.

Bua: Waise beta bhi maa ko bahut miss kar rah tha.

Everybody started teasing them.

R: Main to sab se milne aayi thi. Lekin agar aap logon ko lagta hai ke main sirf Akshu se milne aayi thi, to its fine main ussey hi milkar chali jaati hoon.

All of them started laughing and enquiring about Ani. Atul had paused the movie. She told them he was better and was even eating a bit now. When she sat down on the sofa she pulled Akshat on her lap and he showed her that his front tooth had fallen off. "Arrey yeh kab hua?" she asked. "park se aaney ke baad. Mausaji chikki laye the, aur woh khate hi meri daant hi gir gayi. Phir bua nani ne kaha usey mitti mein gaad do, tab nayi daant achchese aayegi," he explained.

R: Dard to nahi ho raha hai na?

Ak: Nahi mama, bilkul nahi.

Atul: We had made plans for tomorrow and the day after. Sab chowpat ho gaya.

Anj: Ridzi whenever you come to Mumbai, you have to visit doctors only. You can't visit any other place.

R: hey, please don't cancel the plans because of us. You all go.

Mini: Nahi di aapke aur Armaan jeeju ke bagair bilkul maza nahi aayega.

When Anjie and Atul glared at her, she realized her mistake and so added "Kyonki hum logon ko bura lagega ki aap log saath nahi aa paye. Isliye."

To help her out Gappu added "Aur jab chotu bimaar hai, hamara mann nahi karta enjoy karne ka. Main aur Mini soch rahe the ke hum kalhi Lonavala wapas jayenge. Hamari chutti bhi khatam ho gayi hai, to'

S: yes of course, tumhari chutti khatam ho gayi ho to tumhe zaroor wapas chalna chahiye. Atul kal ke liye inke bus tickets mangwa lena.

Atul: Ji papa.

Riddhima felt bad for them, but didn't understand how to help them. She asked "Bua aap to hamare saath chal rahi ho na?

B: Chalna to chahti hoon par soch rahi hoon baad mein akele aana padega.

R: Gappu, Mini tumhari semester kab tak khatam hogi?

G: December mein.

R: Uske baad tumhe chutti t hogi na?

M: Haan di, do hafte ki chutti hogi.

R: Tab tum log chuttiyon ke liye Munnar aajao aur wapas jaate waqt bua ko saat lekar jaana. Theek hai na bua?

Bua smiled and nodded. Then turning to the others she asked "Aap log kab aane ka soch rahe ho. Ani ke naamkaran pe aye to kahin ghoom phir nahi sakey. This time come for a long vacation. Then we can visit some places in Kerala. Even I haven't seen many of the places there."

Atul: Haan Ridzi, kuch plan banate hain.

P: chalo khana aa chukka hai. Thanda hone se pehle sab log kha lete hain. Chalo Riddhima tum bhi hamare saath khalo, phir Armaan ke liye le jao.

A: aap ne khana bahar se mangwaya hai?

Anj: Haan meri servant gaon gayi hai. Isliye 'We were to stay at mama's house na for a week, so I gave her leave to go to her village for Diwali.

They all moved towards the dining table. Shashank pulled out a chair for Riddhima saying "Riddhima aao, baito hamare paas."

R: aap sab log baithiye main parosti hoon.

Atul: Come on Ridzi we'll all serve ourselves, tum bhi baito.

R: Sorry jeeju, par'

"Atul she's not like me. She's the typical Indian wife, who'll eat only after her husband does." Anjie said and laughed.

Everyone felt that Anjie's taunt was unwarranted, but Riddhima just smiled and said "you are partially right di. I'm a traditional Indian wife, but I eat with my husband and not after him, and that's because he won't eat till I do. I know many people envy our relationship, but that will not affect us in any way, because our well wishers, whose prayers and blessings are always with us, outnumber them. Then sitting beside her dad and pulling Akshat on her lap, she started feeding him.
