Chapter 3

Both Maan and Geet worked on the project with absolute silence. Geet did not make her usual bubbly protests, and Maan did not go into a frenzy of irritation the way he always did. It was awkward for both of them to work in such an atmosphere. They had to admit deep within their heart that without their usual banter they were complete strangers to each other.

"So, Geet," said Maan, "what do you think?Should the swimming pool be indoor or outdoor?"

"There shouldn't be a swimming pool," said Geet without thinking.

"Huh?" asked Maan.

"I know Rasika mam's intentions very well. She plans to illegally use the water used for irrigating the fields to use for hotel use."

"That's not possible, the pipes are under supervision from qualified engineers."

"It's funny that you sir of all people don't understand the wonders money can do."

"So you're trying to say I should tell her not to make a swimming pool."

"Yes," Geet argued. "If people are going to lounge around in it the whole day, how will they ever appreciate the scenic beauty of Hoshiarpur?"

Maan's eyes narrowed-they had to in Geet's presence, or he would go home feeling blind. "You seem to know a lot about Hoshiarpur, don't you Miss Geet Handa?"

"It's Geet," she said gritting her teeth, "and anyway, if this is going to be my last project, you might as well as appreciate my inputs. I do my research without the help of laptops."

"Oh really?" asked Maan, clearly amused.

"It's funny how much a person can know if they ever care to step out of their cabin," Geet shot back.

"Fine then," said Maan, determined to get back at her. "If you are so upset about losing your job, why the comment about the cabin?"

Geet was speechless-she wasn't habituated to being taken aback.

The silence resumed and though Geet was quiet, she was fuming with fury. Maan found it very funny for some reason. It bothered him that his IQ was not enough to figure out these 'some reasons'.

Finally, when the clock striked one, Maan said, "Well, it's finished. Anyway it's good Sasha had already kept the blueprints ready."

"You always appreciate Sasha's work, but never mine! I put in so much effort, and she goes after office to some discotheque, and yet you're kicking me out just to give her a promotion!"

Maan was perplexed. From where did Sasha's name come?

"Geet, Sasha will stay where she is. And anyway, being a secretary is not the high post you make it to be."

"I'm not talking about being your secretary," she said grumpily.

"Then?"
