Chapter 2

Maan looked at the files in front of him and made up his mind. Today-or rather tonight-he would have to finish the project. Rural Paradise, a joint venture between him and the famous heiress of the Rathod Hotels Limited, Rasika Rathod, was a dream he had nurtured since his childhood. Years ago his father and mother had left their modest homestead in Hoshiarpur to make their fortune in Delhi. But all they had found was poverty and disappointment. Yet, they were too proud to return back to their village. They had passed on their dream to a little Maan, before their untimely death. His grandmother had come all the way to Delhi to raise him-and she had died too. Everything that Maan cherished had slipped out of his fingers. But he was determined not to let the project go.

But there was one everlasting problem-Geet.

Geet was not your perfect secretary-she had a habit of clumsily spilling coffee, wearing second-hand clothes, and messing up files till nothing could be done to put them back in order. Maan had always wanted to kick her out, but somehow her lonely and financially struggling condition had made him concerned as to how she would find another job in the city. So out of kindness he had let her stay on. And according to him, it was the biggest mistake he had done, because over the past few months he had become attached to her the way a kid gets attached to his favourite toy. It's buttons may drop out and make it blind, and a ear might go missing, but it stays with them.

So when Rasika had pointed out Geet's failing, Maan, famous for his short temper had blasted out at her. So now not had he created a business faux pas, but prompted rumours in the office that he and Geet were having an affair. He could handle his reputation, but he would often wonder how the fragile Geet would cope with it.

Which is why he had decided that once they finished the project, he would suggest a job for her to one of his friends-something he had, for a strange reason, avoided uptil then, and ask her to leave.

"Sir?"

He looked at her. Despite her messed up hair and sleepy eyes, she managed to look pretty. Which bothered him. He wasn't a celibate for goodness' sake-he did notice girls. But he never felt attraction for them the way he did for Geet. Was it her soft eyes or chirpy voice? He would never understand.

"Geet, this will be our final project together. After we finish this, I will somehow convince Rasika not to sue me, and I have arranged a job for you in another company."

Geet was speechless. Maan wanted to kick her out? Why? What had she done? Yes, she made mistakes, but she was just a human being. Was he trying to prove himself mahaan by saying he had made a provision for her in the companies of the spoilt brats he called his friends and business partners? She did not realise she had spoken her thought out aloud.

Seeing the strange look in Maan's eyes, she was slightly perplexed. She did not know whether it was confusion, anger, sadness or all, or nothing.

But whatever it was, it awoke her heart from its deep slumber.
