He was sick…..he was sick….that thought refused to leave her mind. Nikki walked into the hospital half-heartedly, her thoughts consumed by worry for the man she was convincing herself to forget.
Why did he have to get sick? She knew there was no one to look after him…..and now she wasn't even there. "Stop it Nikki" she chided herself and walked in morosely to the break room, where Sid, James, Thomas and Jessica where busy discussing the last night match that the Chicago bulls had won. She took a cup of coffee and joined the group but her mind kept going back to Abhi blocking the noise that was her friends discussing the game animatedly.
"Hellooooooo……gorgeous….what are you thinking? Thomas snapped a finger in front of Nikki's face and she blinked and looked at him as if seeing him for the first time.
"N…..No…Nothing" she stammered and put on a smile, trying to hide her pain.
"Then you didn't answer Sid's question?" James gave his dimpled smile to her.
"What question? I don't know who Chicago bulls are" she looked at Sid and said wondering what question she was supposed to answer about a team she didn't even know about but had heard everyone talking about for the first time in her life.
"Do you have plans for 4th of July weekend…….no one asked you about the bulls honey?" Jessica repeated Sid's question as he rolled his eyes. He had immediately noticed that she was upset and he knew for a fact that she was supposed to call his brother and he could bet his Harley that big bro had said something which had wiped the smile of her beautiful face. His brother was the limit and since he had made Nikki unhappy, Sid was going to make sure that he paid for it.
"4th of July? Nothing….why?" she asked looking around confused as they all smiled at her.
"It's independence day……so it's the long weekend" they all chorused together and Nikki nodded her understanding.
"So…..ok….I'll take the duty if you can decide who wants off between yourself" she volunteered assuming that they would want to take off as it was their national holiday whereas she had nothing to do.
"Silly…..we get the Monday off….all of us….since we are new……so Sid planned a day at his house…..a barbecue and lounging around the pool…..what say….you in?" Thomas asked her and Sid noted that the handsome young man looked interested in Nikki and warning bells rang in his head.
"Oh….that….well am not too" as Nikki started to make and excuse, Sid turned towards her and held her hand.
"Love….you can't say no" he looked so lovingly in her eyes that her breath hitched. Had she heard the word Love?
The rest of the guys sniggered at Sid's drama but he noticed Thomas raise his eyebrow. "Sid….stop it…please" Nikki tried to snatch her hand away but he held on tighter.
"Drama…..you think am doing drama…..here my weekend awaits your company…..I am begging you…..pleading with you….and you….you think its drama?" Sid asked dramatically, shifting to his knees in front of her and Nikki gasped.
"Sid…please" she choked on the words, getting redder by the second due to immense embarrassment.
"First you agree" his eyes laughed at her.
"Sid….look…I …..Honestly" she started when Sid let go of her hand and stood up.
"Party cancelled……if you can make Princess agree then it's on….else you all can come to my house on Monday and we can get drunk at her refusal and dunk each other in the pool" he said so seriously that no one understood for a second and then everyone burst into laughter.
"Fine…fine….since you asked so nicely" Nikki agreed reluctantly and heard a whoop go around the table and some furious party planning started.
"Guys let me know what you plan….I…I have to make this call" she excused herself and found a spot where no one could hear her.
She dialed Abhi's number but cut the call in the first ring when Sid asked behind her who she was calling.
"N…..No one" she blushed furiously and turned to look at him. "What are you doing here?" she questioned him, irritated by his sudden appearance. Though she wanted to thank him too from making a fool of herself in front of Abhi, she still wanted to hear his voice….not wanted…but needed…..to tell her heart that he was alright and taking care of himself.
"I thought you looked upset….so I had to ask you…..what happened? Fought with that boyfriend of yours?" Sid went right for the jugular giving her no chance to cook up a lie.
"N…No…..I …he …everything is fine" she lied not meeting Sid's eyes.
"Really?" he pulled up her chin and made her look at him and when she looked into those familiar eyes, pain shot through her and she gasped.
"What Nikita?" Sid questioned, actually worried and about ready to pick up a fight with the brother he adored for putting so much pain in those beautiful dark eyes.
"Nothing Sid…..lets go….everyone will be waiting for us" Nikki gently turned her face away trying to bear the pain on her own.
"Fine…..as you wish….by the way….just for some information, Chicago Bulls are my brother's and my favorite team…..my favorite player is " he starts chattering, giving her all the information he had on his favorite team which Nikki blocked successfully and just nodded her head.
As soon as she could get away from Sid, Nikki went into a safe corner and dialed Abhi's number, forgetting that it was around 1 am in India. As soon as the phone rang, Thomas intercepted her and she cut the call.
"Nikita…..I had to ask you something" he started but when he noticed her clutching the phone he apologized for interrupting her and turned to move away.
"N…No Thomas…..go ahead ask" she decided to call Abhi later.
"Well….I was….I was wondering if you ….you know" Thomas blushed a little and Nikki looked at him with rounded eyes. She couldn't believe that he was blushing.
"I what Thomas?" she asked, placing a hand gently on his arm.
"Well….you know….go out with me?" he asked and Nikki looked at him stunned. Had she heard right? Had she been just asked out?
"Go out with you?" she croaked back disbelieving and saw thomas's head nod. In any other life she would have been flattered that Thomas had asked her out. She genuinely liked the man and especially since he made her laugh and always looked at her adoringly. Sadly, this life, her heart beat solely for the Sadu she had run away from.
"I am..." Nikki started to decline when she realized that she was trying to get over Abhi not become a devdas in his thoughts. "Sure……why not?" she said changing her mind and smiled and got a brilliant smile in return.
"Oh Cool…..then dinner…..tonight?" he asked and Nikki agreed.
Sid was looking for Nikki when he stopped short at hearing her agree to go out with Thomas. What the hell? Here he was trying to fix her up with his brother, albeit crazy brother and here she had gone and agreed to date the firang!!! Sid fumed but he knew that one wrong step would make all his plans go haywire.
"Think Sid think…..there can be a way to manipulate this situation to suit you….think think" he muttered to himself walking straight out of sight of Nikki and Thomas and banged into his mother.
"Sidhhant" she caught him by his collar when he jumped at her voice.
"Ma…..Sid…..and why are you yelling…..we are not at home" he made a face and Aarti rolled her eyes. Both her boys were a handful. Whereas her first born was the less talking serious types who was happy in his shell, this younger one was the flamboyant, extrovert and naughty. She lovingly touched Sid's face, missing Abhi.
"Ma….stop it…..I am not a kid" Sid stepped away aghast at her loving gesture and she shook her head.
"I know that sweetie…..now tell me what you are stuck with….you know Mom can help" she read him like a book and he smiled naughtily, an idea forming in his mind.
"Well my lovely Mom…..I have a news for you" saying that he drags her in his office and fesses up on what he believed was the relationship between Abhimanyu and Nikita. Hearing that Aarti's eyes light up with joy. Finally…..Finally Abhimanyu was in love and no one could have been happier than her. Moreover, she liked Nikita.
"Mom….don't think ahead of yourself…..I am sure but you know how unpredictable bhai is….I am trying to make him jealous….but man oh man….he is stubborn….he still is stuck on the line she is my intern" Sid mimics his brother and Aarti smiles.
"Well….now what?" Arti asks.
"Well now your son needs to come here Mom" Sid replies.
"I see……well we can't do that….he will figure out in a second what we are up to….but you know what….lets think about some way to get him here" Aarti says and Sid nods. Both mother and son sit in her office brainstorming on how to get the elder son come home and confess to Nikita.
Finally….Nikki breathes and calls Abhi again. This time no one distracts or interrupts her and she waits with bated breath for him to pick up the phone. When it strikes to her how stupid it would appear she moves her finger to disconnect the call when she hears his sleepy voice answer. Her heart jumps to her mouth and she is unable to cut the call.
"Hello" he says sleepily, his voice even huskier and sexier when sleep clouded.
"H….Hi" Nikki whispers.
"Hi" he replies back, the sleep vanishing out of his eyes. He couldn't believe she was calling when he had been dreaming about her. What he had been dreaming about was too vivid in his imagination that he could still feel the softness of her skin under his exploring hands.
"How….how are you?" she asks, her tone taking on a breathless quality.
"Well Dr. Nikita….I am as anyone sleeping at 3 am would be" he replied back and then his eyes close in reflex. Shoot…..he had to go and be rude to her….again? Here she was calling her ….he was sure worried about him as he had lied to her that he was unwell and he had gone ahead and gotten mad at her.
"Sorry…..I didn't….I'll call ….actually am sorry" Nikki's eyes welled up and she decides to cut the call.
"Well what's the point? You already called…..but don't worry Dr. I am fine……now pay attention to your work…..the work which made you run away from Sanjeevani" he snaps. He had to do this he justified. He didn't want her calling as he wouldn't be able to pick up the call as he was boarding his flight tomorrow to come home……..to her.
"Sorry" Nikki said and cut the line and went into the rest room to sob her heart out.
She loved him so much that it was like a thorn in her heart. Whatever she did, however hard she tried, something or the other reminded her of him or made him come back into her life. Now she wasn't going to do it anymore. She knew it would kill her but she was going to lock him out. Enough was enough…..she was going to move forward.
She wiped her tears and walked to find Thomas, ready to spend the evening in his enjoyable company.
"Ma…..send Sid to O' Hare at 7" Abhi called his mother and told her.
"Why?" she asked.
"Maaaaa…….am reaching Chicago on the 3rd of July……I would need a ride home" he explained and a smile of victory lined his mother's face. So god had heard her…..Abhimanyu was coming home….and she knew who it was for.
"Fine….have a safe flight baby…can't wait to see you" her happiness poured through the phone and Abhi's heart gladdened. At least his Mom and bro would be thrilled to see him…..about Nikki…..he would soon find out.
