(FLASHBACK)
Sid could not wait for Ridz to get here. He had made sure everything inside was perfect and he knew he was taking a big chance trying to surprise her with this big of a gift. But he couldn't help it, he just knew this is where they were meant to be. Just as he knew when he agreed to marry Ridz that she was the one he was meant to be with. Oh sure he didn't want to accept it in his brain, but his heart knew that day. Maybe, it knew much earlier for saying goodbye to Tamana didn't prick at his heart as much as getting slapped three times by the strange siren in fire engine red. So as he paced in front of the gate he couldn't help himself, he wanted her here now. Where is she? His impatience was running thin, so he pulled out his cell and hit 1 on his speed dial. And as he did a smile came to his face as he remembered how his chudail had emerged when she found out she was 2 on his phone. Even as he tried to explain to her that the default on the phone set 1 to voicemail, all he got was her chudail eye stare and pouting stomp off. So of course, he spent that whole night with the phone company trying to figure out how to reset the phone so that he could override the default. He finally did manage to get her to number 1, and when he told her next morning all she said was, "Good. You don't expect a pat on the back for that, do you? That's where I should have been from the beginning." With those words of attitude and a flick of her hair she walked out the door towards the car.
After two rings she picked up, "Ridz, where are you? How long are going to be? Come on I've been waiting for almost thirty minutes."
Ridz simply said, "Siddhant Modi, I am a doctor. I work at this place called a hospital where people get sick and I have to help treat them. And unfortunately, sick people do not follow regular hours."
Just the sound of her voice, calmed some of his nerves. So more calmly he continued, "I know, I know. I'm sorry, it's just that I can't wait to see your lovely face. It's been too long. What can I say, I'm in withdrawl. You need to hurry. As you've explained to me so eloquently you are a doctor and my withdrawl case is an emergency."
Ridz simply laughed at his cheesiness. "Tum bhi, Siddhant. You will never change. I'm only a ten minutes away, and if you stop distracting me I might make it in five." And with those words she hung up.
True to her word, five minutes later Ridz pulled up to the gate and parked her car next to Sid's. He rushed over to open her door, and help her out as chivalrous men do. But they both knew he simply wanted to get her into arms as soon as he could. That was Sid. He couldn't go a block of greater than 24 hours without at least one hug. It was quite funny actually. Most men wanted kisses or words. But all Sid wanted was a hug. So she "obliged" on the outside, but inside she too was craving the hug. Once in his arms she let out a sigh and thought to herself, I used to think taking overnight call was bad because I lost so much sleep and ended up spending the night running all over the hospital taking care of 5x the number of patients. But now I know there is something worse. And that is going those 30 hours without getting a single hug from this man. Sometimes I think the universe is conspiring against us, why don't we ever get overnight the same day? I know we would be too busy to even talk, but just seeing him would make it so much better.
Sid released her from his arms, and took her hand in his and started to walk toward the gate. His face glowed like a little kid about to enter his favorite arcade. Ridz followed behind him, staring at his face and asked, "Sid, now that I'm here can you pleeeeeeeeaaseeee tell me what the rush was? What is it that's got you so excited?"
"You'll see soon. Just follow me." And with only those words he practically dragged her through the gate and up a concrete path. Then about half way up he took a right and all of the sudden slowed his pace down to a slow saunter. Ridz couldn't help but stare at him with confusion and curiosity in her face at his abrupt decrease in speed. As Sid turned to look down at her face he saw her question and responded with, "Sorry. I was eager to get to our destination and started rushing. But just now I remembered that I really enjoy the journey to the destination when I'm with you so I slowed down. Besides now that you are here, and your hand is in my hand, we can take our time." And with those words, Sid squeezed her hand slightly and started to ask her about her shift.
Ridz started from the beginning talking about how her first few patients were kids and she thought it would be a fun shift, but then slowly as the night went on the cases only became more complicated and that by the time she hit the halfway point she was ready to keel over from exhaustion. But as she recounted the story she couldn't help but glance at her surroundings. She noticed the full blooming flowers in her favorite color pink flanking the path. There was an endless row of them starting from the gate they just entered through running all the way up as far into the horizon as she could see. Then a little further beyond in the middle of the grassy land she saw groupings of trees, and upon closer inspection she came to realize they were mango trees. She immediately thought of her secret wish as a child about wanting her own mango tree so that she could pluck them off at her own will and have them whenever she desired. Then there was the swing tied underneath a pair of the mango trees. She couldn't help but imagine her and Sid spending and evening there relaxing after a long day of work. As Ridz started to take notice of the things around she didn't realize that her voice started to get softer and her story recount began to slow down, until finally she wasn't saying a word. Of course, Sid knew why her story slowly stopped. For he was watching her face the whole time. He saw the sweet innocent smile that bloomed on her face as she took note of the pink flowers along the path, and how that face transformed into a childlike eagerness as she saw the mango trees and remembered her childhood wish of owning her own tree someday. Then he saw her face blush slightly as she let out a sigh of contentment and he knew she was looking at the swing and imagined them spending their evenings there. Just watching the happy emotions flicker across Ridz's face brought him so much joy and happiness. And she hadn't even seen the best part yet.
Then she saw it. He knew the exact moment the house came into view, not because he was looking at it too, but because he saw the change it caused on her face. In an instant her face froze and multiple emotions starting with surprise, then happiness, then eagerness, and finally a simple joy flashed across it. He saw her eyes dart from left to right as she tried to soak in the beauty of the place in front of her. It stood two stories high, with butter yellow siding, a wraparound porch and a small flat grass field behind it. As those emotions flashed across her face Sid felt the weight he didn't even know he was carrying on his shoulders lift. He knew now that what he had done would be well received by Ridz and he was confident that this would be one surprise that wouldn't blow up in his face. Or so he hoped. He tugged on Ridz's and hand got her feet moving again. This time he picked up the conversation, "I drove by here the other day and saw this place and I just knew I had to bring you up here. That you would definitely want to see it, inside and out." Ridz simply nodded her head in agreement. "I made some calls and did some hunting, and found out that the owner loved renting it out. So I made reservations and made sure we both had the weekend off so that I could bring you here and we could both enjoy it." Sid could see the excitement build inside Ridz as she realized that this was not just a look by, but that she would actually get to go inside. That she could pretend that she owned this place, even if it was only for a few days, it was more that she had thought.
They decided they would check out the place from top to bottom first before they decided what to do for the evening. They started with the backyard and worked their way towards the front. Halfway to the front of the house, Sid realized that he had dropped his phone in the back. He told Ridz to go on ahead to the front and go on inside, that he would catch up with her a soon as he grabbed his phone. She protested saying that she'd come with him, but he insisted she go on ahead that he would probably be back before she even got up the stairs. So she turned and continued toward the front as he jogged to the back to grab his phone. He found his phone rather quickly and jogged back up towards the front too. He reached the front just as Ridz was about to push the front door open. Sid stopped next to her and said, "See I told you I'd be back." Ridz responded by saying, "Of course you did, you forgot to give me the key so I couldn't go in without you anways." And as she spoke the words Sid realized his mistake and with a pout to his lips he said, "I'm sorry" and produced the keys that would unlock the door. He handed her the keys and told her to go ahead and do the honors. The words were barely out of his mouth before Ridz had unlocked and pushed open the doors. They both stood on the porch and simply gazed inside...
