4 months later…
Abhi kept looking eagerly at the door, waiting. A couple minutes later, the door opened, and out walked Muskaan and Ridhimma, wheeling Nikki in front of them. Abhi stood up from the bed and walked towards them, a sad smile on his lips.
Nikki was dressed in a royal blue salwar kameez, decorated with simple silver sequined patterns. Abhi knelt beside her wheelchair, and took one hand in his and cupped her face with his other hand. He slowly lifted her face, so that she was looking into his eyes. He looked into her eyes, trying to search for some sign of recognition, some sign of acknowledgement… but he couldn't find it. The big brown eyes, which once glittered with love for him, were today dark and frozen. The innocent and naughty girl who loved to play pranks on anyone and everyone was today so silent and unmoving. Why? Because of their love…

Abhi was talking to Nikki as if nothing had happened until suddenly the monitor started beeping. He looked up and saw that her heartbeats were getting slower, until they were so far apart that it was almost half a minute between each beat. Dr. Keerti, Atul, and Dr. Shashank ran in from the doorway, each checking a part of her body. Abhi just sat there, numb, staring at Nikki, who was shuddering and breathing heavily. Oblivious to him, the other doctors were conferring about Nikki.
"Doctors, we have to do something. Her heart rate is not stable, and a chance of death is very much possible in this case. The tiny rip in her lung has become very big, and she is having trouble breathing. Her pancreas and right kidney have also been penetrated. We have to do surgery immediately," Dr. Shashank insisted.
"But, sir, aapne to kaha tha ke her condition is very fragile, so surgery will not be a good option…"
"Dr. Atul, haalat waqt ke saath badal jaatein hain. And now Dr. Nikita's condition is such that we cannot wait. Dr. Keerti, please get all the necessary equipment ready and meet me in the OT in half an hour. Dr. Atul, it is best if you do not participate in this surgery."
Atul opened his mouth to object. "No, Atul…Right now, Dr. Modi needs all the support he can get. It is better if you stay with him."
"Okay sir. The OT will be ready for you in half an hour."
