Chapter 1

Mourning for the loss

Nupur sat cross-legged on her bed, staring at nothing in particular. Her mind was racing too fast for her to be able to control any emotions.

She let her tears flow down her cheeks, what was the need to wipe them away? To pretend?

She let them fall.

FLASHBACK

"Nupur Beta" Bauji coughed.

"Ji Bauji" Nupur held her Bauji's hand as she straightened up "Pani?" she wondered if that's wat her father wanted.

He shook his head, Nupur rubbed Bauji's hand softly

"Beta, lagta hai ab mujh budhe main aur jeene ki himmat nahin hai" Bauji coughed again.

"Bauji aisa mat kahiye" Nupur pleaded with her eyes.

"Beta" Bauji interrupted" Zindagi yahi hai'ek na ek din to yeh hona hi hai" Tears flowed down her cheeks at her Bauji's words.

Bauji wiped her tears "Nupur promise me beta, apna khayal rakhogey,tum Gunjan ka khayal rakhogey, use kabhi bhi apne bauji ki kami ka ehsaas mat hone dena, vaada karo"

Nupur knew that her Bauji's end had come, The doctor's words had already drained her of any hopes.

"Vaada Karti hoon Bauji, Gunjan ki har takleef, saare dukh mere hongey, uski har ek baat ka khayal rakhoongey, usse aapki kami mehsoos nahin hone doongey, uski zimmedari main longey" Nupur said holding Bauji's hand tight.

She felt the weight of her sister's responsibility on her.

Bauji smiled ever so slightly and then Nupur's ears filled with machine's Beeping Noise

Her Bauji was no more

FLASHBACK ENDS

Meanwhile Gunjan was boiling water in the kitchen.

She didn't know when the dark clouds seemed to have covered her, when her nightmare began, All she knew was that now she wont be able to hug her Bauji, she would never see him again, She missed him. She missed his loving arms, his consoling smile, his blessings that were always with her, she felt as if her shelter was gone, Her Bauji had seemed to be the wall that separated her from the rest of the world, and now'now that very wall seemed to have collapsed.

Gunjan ebbed another sob coming.

The tea was ready, she poured it into the cup and took it to her Bui.

"Bui" Gunjan said softly knocking on the door, Bui looked up and smiled "Gunjan Beta'aaja"

Gunjan offered bui the cup of tea and was about to leave when bui stopped her.

"Gunjan" she called.

"Ji" Gunjan said she felt it all coming, the lump was forming in her throat, she felt as if she was going to crumple.

She felt her bui tug at her hand, Before Gunjan knew tears were flowing from her eyes.

Bui had made gunjan keep her head on her lap.Sweetly she spread her fingers through her hair and caressed her cheek like a mother.

"Ro le beta, main nahin rokoongey tujhe"

Gunjan's sob came one after the other, she didn't know wat she was to do. Even Nupur had left her now, She had herself locked in her room, now when Gunjan had wanted nupur more than any person to be with her.

Gunjan's sob slowly turned into wails of cry.

She was crying so hard that now it was difficult for bui to hold her.

Nupur jumped from her bed when she heard Gunjan wailing for Bauji.

"Gunjan" nupur whispered worry etched on her face.

Nupur unlocked her door and ran towards gunjan, On entering bui's room, Nupur felt a searing pain in her heart, Gunjan was hugging her Bui hard and wailing for Bauji to come back.

Nupur reached forward and held Gunjan by the arms, Gunjan turned to find Nupur.

"Di" gunjan's voice cracked.

"Gunjan" nupur said assuringly and hugged her.
