"You want to what?" asked Prithvi, his confusion clearly evident in his voice.
"I want to go on a vacation," Kripa answered calmly as she sipped a little of her coffee.
"Why?" asked Josh, his shock just as evident as Prithvi's had been. Kripa never volunteered to leave work. It was completely unheard of. It was just never done.
"Everyone needs time off once in a while Josh. Besides I've been working non-stop for the past week. I just need some alone time right now to relax. It's not that hard to understand is it?" she asked as she put down her java chip frappuccino.
It was still hard to believe.
"Are you sure that's it? Is there something bothering you that you're not telling us? Is there someone bothering you?" Prithvi asked, still unable to understand.
Kripa smiled. She had expected that reaction.
"No, there's nothing and no one bothering me. Look, you guys, I just want some time apart from all the paperwork and stress. Try to understand."
Prithvi and Josh looked at each other. It wasn't that hard to comprehend when she put it like that. God knew there were plenty of times that Prithvi would have given anything to take a break from being a doctor and Josh would have actually given up food to take a break from being a singer. That's right. Josh was willing to give up food!
Kripa smiled to herself when she saw the looks of comprehension on Josh and Prithvi's face. Now came the hard part. She took a deep breath.
"There's something I need to say," she began nervously.
"Yeah?" the boys both asked simultaneously.
"Well…you see…"
"Kripa what is it?" Josh asked, always the impatient one.
"I'm not going to tell you guys where I'm going," she explained hurriedly.
The boys stared at her in blank amazement. Kripa waited for one of them to say something. She waited in vain. No one said anything. It was the longest and most tense silence that Kripa had ever had to endure and it was slowly stretching her nerves thin. Just when she thought that she had no nerves left to stretch, Prithvi broke through the silence.
"What did you just say?" he asked, his astonishment making his voice sound high-pitched.
"I…I said…I said that I'm not going to tell you where I'm going," she managed to stammer out.
"Why?" asked Josh for what felt like the hundredth time. It seemed that all he had done today is ask why?
"Well because I know that if I tell you, you'll keep calling to make sure that I'm okay. Not that that's a bad thing," Kripa hastened to add when she saw the looks of anger replace the looks of shock on their faces, "but I just need to be by myself in a place where no one knows me. I need to be a nameless, faceless stranger or I'll go absolutely crazy." Kripa looked each boy in the eye, imploring them with hers to try and understand.
No one said anything for a long minute.
"How long will you be gone?" Prithvi asked in a grudging voice when he noticed a thin sheen that looked suspiciously like tears in Kripa's eyes. As much as he hated that she didn't want to tell them where she was going, he didn't want to be responsible for her misery. Kripa never took time off for herself. She deserved some happiness.
"About a month," she answered in a small voice.
"Better bring back lots of presents," Josh said, grinning at her.
************************************************************ ************************
Kripa walked around her desk in agitation. Where were the documents she needed? Her vacation had already been approved and she wanted to leave as soon as possible. But she didn't want to leave behind loose ends. Kripa was forever organized.
"Apparently I'm not organized now," she thought in frustration as she walked to her cabinet and yanked open a drawer.
"Is this a bad time?" a voice asked from the doorway. Kripa whirled around and smiled when she saw who it was.
"Hey Mishty! What brings you here?" she asked as she closed the cabinet drawer.
"I just heard that you were going on vacation and I wanted to wish you a safe trip," Mishty answered as she sat in the spare chair in front of Kripa's desk.
"Thanks," Kripa said as she opened another drawer of her cabinet.
"What are you looking for?"
"There were some papers that I was supposed to give to Alliyah before I left, but I just can't seem to find them." Kripa said desperately as she continued to look. She worked in the hospital as surgeon which was connected to the department that Alliyah worked in. It was vital that she received the papers.
"Well what do they look like?" asked Mishty as she looked around the room.
"The Hospital Seal was on the top left hand corner and the papers were about this new patient that I've been working on for the past week."
"Are there…" Mishty paused, "…seven pages altogether?" she asked.
"Yes," Kripa answered absentmindedly.
"Are these the papers?" Mishty asked.
Once again, Kripa whirled around. She walked to Mishty and picked up the papers she was holding. She let out the breath she wasn't aware she had been holding.
"Oh my god Mishty! You're an absolute life-saver. I was this close to going crazy. "Where were they?"
"On your desk under that paperweight," she said her smile evident in her voice. "You probably just skimmed over it when you were searching."
Kripa glared at the paperweight. Mishty laughed. Suddenly someone knocked on the door. The girls both looked at the door.
"Hey Mishty," the man at the door said.
"Karthik! What are you doing here?" Mishty asked as she stood up.
"I was wondering if you could do me a favor."
"Sure."
"I have to deliver a package, but I really don't have the time right now and it has to reach tonight."
"Why don't you just mail it?" asked Mishty.
"The recipient specifically asked for it to be delivered by hand."
"Normally I wouldn't have asked but…"
"I'll deliver it," Mishty said as she plucked the envelope out of Karthik's hands.
"Thanks Mishty. You're a life-saver."
"So I've been told," said Mishty laughingly.
"Thanks again. Bye," said Karthik as he walked towards the door.
"Oh wait! Who's it for?"
"Angad Khanna!" Anthony yelled out as he left the room. Because he left the room, he didn't see the blood drain out of Mishty's face. Mishty collapsed into the chair she had been sitting in.
"I…I…I can't do it!" she stammered.
Kripa saw the blind panic on Mishty's face and quickly conjured up a glass of water for the now almost hyperventilating girl. She handed the glass to Mishty and knelt down in front of her. She grabbed a hold of Mishty's hand and attempted to calm the girl as she drank the whole glass in one swallow."
"I can't do it Kripa. I just can't see him again!" Mishty cried out.
"Shhh. It's okay Mishty. Just calm down."
"I can't face him again Kripa. Not after…" Mishty stopped, her sobs making her words incomprehensible. In that moment, Kripa felt a hatred like one she had never felt before and that hatred was directed solely at Angad Khanna. She got up of the floor and hugged the trembling girl, murmuring meaningless words meant to comfort.
"It's okay. It's alright. You don't have to see him. I promise." Kripa continued to speak as Mishty continued to sob, hating the way that her best friend was suffering. Mishty continued to weep for about ten minutes and Kripa comforted her the whole time. Mishty finally got herself together and gently pulled away from Kripa. She grabbed a tissue from the desk and wiped her puffy eyes.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to fall apart like that," she whispered.
"Oh Mishty, the only thing you should apologize for is wasting your tears on a man like Angad. He's scum. The lowest life form on Earth. Completely worthless," Kripa said her voice filled with conviction.
Mishty smiled sadly.
"That's sweet of you Kripa."
"No it's not. It's the truth."
Mishty's smile widened and lost a little of its sad quality.
"What am I going to do?" she asked softly. "I can't face him again. Not after what happened…"
"I'll do it!" Kripa volunteered hastily as she saw the tears gather in her friend's eyes again. Mishty stared at her.
"I couldn't ask you to do that for me," Mishty said her eyes wide.
"Nonsense. You're not asking me, I'm volunteering," Kripa said briskly as she straightened up.
"But…"
"No buts. I'll do it. Besides, you're not off the hook. You have to do something for me."
"Anything," Mishty said fervently.
"You have to give the papers to Alliyah for me," Kripa said as she gathered the papers that she needed delivered.
"Of course. You have no idea what this means to me Kripa."
"What are friends for? Now I really should really be going if I want to get to that vacation. I'll see you later okay?"
"Okay." Mishty took the papers from Kripa and hugged her.
"Thank you," she whispered simply into Kripa's ears. She pulled away and with a quick wave left the room, leaving Kripa alone.
************************************************************ ************************
Kripa stood in front of a magnificent mansion. It probably wasn't as big as hers, but it came pretty close. The walls were built with pale grey stones and were covered with rose vines from top to bottom. Two huge double doors with intricate designs on them led the way into the house. The knocker was in the shape of a coiled snake. It was breath-taking.
"This is Angad's house? What am I thinking?" Kripa berated herself as she walked up the stairs leading to the house and knocked gently three times. She waited nervously on the doorsteps. So what if she hadn't seen Angad for over five years. He was probably still a jerk. Besides it wasn't as if she had to actually spend time with the man. She would just walk in, hand him the envelope and walk back out. It was that simple.
"Then why am I so nervous?" she asked herself. She didn't have time to contemplate the answer because the door swung open at that moment. Standing on the other side was an old lady dressed in black and white. Kripa guessed she was the maid.
"Good afternoon. I'm looking for Mr. Khanna," Kripa said politely. The maid stared at her. Just as Kripa was about to repeat her request, the maid turned around and started to walk down one of the many hallways in the house. Not knowing what to do, Kripa followed her.
They walked for a few minutes in complete silence and suddenly the maid stopped. Kripa, right behind the maid, almost crashed into her, but managed to stop herself in time. The maid pointed to the door that they had stopped in front of and walked away.
Kripa watched to maid disappear around the corner and took a deep breath. She raised her hand and once again knocked on the door three times.
"Come in," a deep voice commanded from the other side of the door.
Kripa gathered her courage, twisted the doorknob, and quickly entered the room. The sight inside was the last thing she had expected to see. Angad Khanna was sitting in a chair with a little girl who couldn't have been more that three or four years old on his lap and a book was in his hands. He had obviously been reading to the little girl. But why? And who was the little girl in the first place?
Angad Khanna looked up from the book in his hands and for the first time in five years, cool grey eyes met passionate amber ones. The grey eyes widened in disbelief.
"Kripa!"
It took Kripa a few seconds to find her voice. "Angad," she said with as much civility as she could muster.
"What the hell are you doing here?" he asked angrily. The little girl's eyes widened in shock when she heard Angad's tone of voice and his use of language. She had grey eyes too; identical to the ones of the man on whose lap she was currently sitting. That was Kripa's last thought before she realized that she had just been asked a question.
"I came to give you something," she replied her voice now sounding just as angry.
Angad picked up the little girl and deposited her on the floor. He stood up and walked towards the Kripa.
"What makes you think I'd want anything from you?" he asked sneering at her in the same way that he had done for seven years.
Kripa was just about to snap back when she glanced at the little girl. Her bottom lip was quivering and there were tears in her eyes. Obviously they had upset the little one. Kripa glared at Angad and walked to the little girl. She knelt down so she was face to face with the girl. Angad stared at Kripa's back in absolute shock.
"Hi there. My name's Kripa. What's yours?" she asked the little girl in a gentle voice.
"I...I'm Sonia," the little girl sobbed out.
"Wow. That's a very pretty name. And it suits you 'because you're very pretty too," Kripa said.
"I am?" asked Sonia as she started to stop sobbing. The lady was very nice.
"Yes you are. I have some candy. Would you like some?"
Sonia's eyes lit up the mention of candy. She was just about to respond, but at the last possible moment, she closed her mouth and looked at Angad. Angad motioned for her to come to him.
"Can I have the candy?" she asked.
"You can have candy later Sonia. I want you to leave us alone for a few minutes okay?" he said as he crouched down in front of her.
"But..."
"I'll tell you what. Why don't you find a house maid and ask her to bring you some chocolate?" Angad asked.
Sonia immediately looked appeased. She kissed Angad on the cheek and ran to the door, her auburn hair flying behind her. Once again, Kripa wondered who the little girl was.
Sonia paused at the doorway. She looked back.
"Good-bye Kri…Kri…Kripa. Bye daddy." And just like that she skipped out of the room.
Angad looked up in time to see Kripa's eyes widen in shock. He couldn't help but smirk at the expression on her face.
"Sh...She's your daughter?" Kripa managed to choke out.
"That's right. Got a problem with that?"
Kripa shook her head violently. She couldn't believe it. Angad Khanna actually had a daughter!
"Now I'm going to ask you again. What are you doing here Kripa?" he asked arrogantly.
Kripa forced herself to shake out of the stupor his announcement had caused. She reached into her bag, and drew out the envelope. She held it out to Angad. He didn't take it.
Kripa became annoyed.
"Oh for god's sake, it's not a bomb. Take it. It's yours!" snapped Kripa.
Angad reached for it cautiously. He saw the Hospital Seal in the corner and relaxed.
"Why are YOU giving me this Kripa? What's the matter? Did you miss me so much that you just had to see me?" he asked not being able to resist baiting her.
"Don't flatter yourself Angad. I was doing a friend a favor. I'm sure you wouldn't understand the concept, but some people actually like to help others."
Angad frowned. When had he lost control of the conversation?
"I was just about to leave anyway," said Kripa as she walked towards the door. She wasn't expecting a thanks and she didn't receive one.
CRASH!
Just as Kripa was about to open to door, it crashed open. The force knocked her off her feet and onto the floor where she promptly lost consciousness as soon as her head connected with the hard floor.
"I can't believe Angad has a daughter!" This was Kripa's last thought before the darkness took over.
Enjoy the first part!!
