"My wife."
The words hung in the air. The ramifications of what Angad had just said hit him fast and hard. This was it. There was no going back now.
He waited in silence for Kripa to say something. Unfortunately it looked as if he would be waiting for a while. She didn't look ready to talk to anyone at the moment. Her eyes had widened considerably and she was staring at him with an expression that could have only been termed as shock. Obviously, whatever she had been expecting had not been this.
Just when Angad thought that he couldn't take anymore, she blinked. The reaction wasn't big, but at least it was something. Right now he was willing to settle for anything.
"I...I beg your pardon?" she asked, disbelief plain in her voice.
"You're my wife. I'm your husband," he articulated carefully as if the blow to her head had not only damaged her memory but her cognitive ability as well.
Kripa bristled at the insinuation that she couldn't figure out that he was her husband if
she was his wife. Sure, she may have had some problems with her memory, but she wasn't a complete idiot. If he was really her husband wouldn't he know that?
This observation just confirmed her suspicions that he was lying to her. He just didn't feel like her husband. Kripa was certain that she would remember something as critical as her own marriage. Besides what kind of husband asked his wife if she was alright with all the enthusiasm of a martyr with a lost cause who had just found out that he was going to be executed? And if he really was her husband wouldn't he be hugging or kissing her or something?
She decided to call him out on his bluff.
"No really, who am I?" she asked speaking each word carefully as if his brain power was diminished as well. After all, if he was going to make her feel stupid, it only seemed fair that she should return the favor.
It was Angad Khanna's eyes that widened this time. This reaction was definitely one he hadn't expected. He had expected shock, certainly. But then he had just assumed that she would accept the situation and be all giggly and stuff when she realized that she was married to a Khanna. It's what an ordinary girl would have done.
That should have been his first clue. It's what an ordinary girl would have done. And since when had Kripa Sharma ever been ordinary?
Angad was cursing himself as this realization sunk in. Why had he expected things to be easy? Nothing was ever easy with Kripa. He had had to fight with her every step of the way for seven years. Why on earth did he think that things would be any different now that they were adults?
Even as he was cursing himself he couldn't stop a frisson of fascination that coursed through him. At least he couldn't complain that life with Kripa would be boring.
This thought pulled his mind into focus. He couldn't talk about a life with Kripa if she didn't believe that they had life together to begin with. He had to find some way to convince her and he had to do it soon. The longer it took, the more unbelievable the story would seem. What kind of man couldn't convince his own wife that he was really her husband?
"You really are my wife," he reiterated.
"We're really married?" she asked still finding the situation unbelievable.
"Yes."
Kripa narrowed her eyes. He was lying. She knew it. Maybe it was the way that he said it; as if he couldn't quite believe it himself or maybe it was the way that he couldn't look directly into her eyes as he spoke. Whatever the reason, she decided to test him.
"Prove it." she stated simply.
He choked on air.
"What!"
"Prove it." she repeated. "If we really are married, I'm sure you'll be able to find something that would prove it."
He seemed to get his choking under control. He had to applaud her ingenuity even as he devised ways to choke her to death for the trouble that she was putting him through.
"What kind of proof do you want?" he asked uncertainly.
"I don't know. I'm sure you'd know better than me seeing as you remember us being married," she replied succinctly.
Yep. This was definitely not going the way that he had planned. Time to assess what she knew, he thought to himself. Just how deep was her mistrust in his story?
"Why don't you believe me?"
Kripa blinked. There's something she hadn't expected.
"Why should I believe you?" she asked instead of answering his question.
"I've provided you with food and shelter. You should trust me," he stated sounding disgruntled at the thought that she, Kripa Sharma – even with her memory loss - had the audacity to question anything he, Angad Khanna, said.
"That's exactly why I don't trust you. Giving food and shelter doesn't necessarily signify trust." she said simply.
"You had faith in me when I walked into this room."
She fell silent at that, unable to deny it. The truth was that she had believed in him when she first saw him. She had had no reason not to. Now she wasn't so sure. With every lie he told (and she was sure they were lies seeing as he couldn't look her in the eye whenever he said anything) her trust in him evaporated bit by bit. The more time she spent with him, the more her instinct kicked in telling her not to trust him. And Kripa Sharma was a woman who had complete faith in her instincts, of this she was sure.
Angad waited. He watched her carefully trying to see her reaction to his words. For once, he looked her straight in the eyes. Her facial expression stayed the same. A slight frown marred her brow and he had the most absurd urge to try and make it disappear.
Her eyes on the other hand, were a different matter. They had clouded over, hinting at the ominous thoughts that obviously ran amok in her mind. He tried to imagine them and came up with the conclusion that whatever they were, they weren't favorable. He resolved to find out what was bothering her or else she might never believe him. And that was something that he simply couldn't risk.
"Why don't you trust me?" he asked once again. Perhaps he would be better able to convince her if he knew what she was thinking.
"You haven't exactly given me the greatest reason to."
"What do you mean?"
"You gave me food and shelter so I should believe everything you say right?"
He nodded.
"If I did for you what you did for me, would you rely on me?"
He nodded again, but not before a slight hesitation. Unfortunately Kripa noticed that hesitation.
"Why should I believe when you wouldn't were you in my position?"
"But you'd believe me if I could prove it?"
She nodded. Something tangible. That was exactly what she needed.
"Just out of curiosity, why made you doubt the fact that you're my wife?"
"You."
He frowned.
"You don't exactly strike me as a loving husband. It's just difficult to have confidence in someone whose words say one thing and body language says another."
"Body language?"
"Hmm. We've been talking for half an hour now and you haven't tried to come near me once. If anything, you seem to be moving farther away. Not exactly the actions of a caring husband towards his beloved wife who's just woken up from a severe head injury."
Angad's frown intensified. He had considered any of this at all. This situation was clearly more complicated than it seemed. He tried to make amends.
"That's not true."
"Yes it is. You haven't been within five feet of me. You haven't kissed me or even hugged me. So you're either lying or we're a couple who's about to get divorced. I personally believe the former more than the latter."
He stared at her in amazement. She had suffered a blow to the head, been injured when she fell, lost her memory, and yet here she was – logically giving him reasons why she thought he was lying to her.
There was only one way to convince her. With this thought in mind, he slowly stood up, moved to the bed and sat down beside her. She frowned in confusion.
'This is just to convince her. This is just to convince her. This is just to convince her.' Angad repeated to himself over and over again as he leaned in closer.
Amber orbs met silver ones in bewilderment.
Kripa's astonished eyes were the last thing that Angad saw before he finally closed the distance between them and kissed her.
