Confusion
"Naspiti……… I don't know what sins I have committed in my past life that I have to suffer you in this lifetime. Have you no shame? How dare you stand in front of me like that without a flicker of remorse?"
Kranti gasped and winced at those cutting words. Raj who was standing behind her instinctively held her shoulders. He didn't want that grumpy woman physically attacking Kranti. Verbal abuse was okay since it could be shrugged off though Kranti was not upto that either at this moment.
"You scoundrel!! You are at the bottom of all of this…………..I am sure. You are nothing but a lout in a gentleman's garb. You have spoilt the sanctity of my house ever since you entered it under disguise." She threw her accusations at Raj.
Raj stared back at the woman expressionlessly. He was trying to stop Kranti from shrugging off his hands. So long as the attention was on someone else, she was safe. Couldn't she understand that? Awasthi was looking down concentrating on a large ant which was racing across the floor with a grain on its back. The ant was oblivious to the goings on in the room.
"I don't know what you are saying ………" started Raj.
"Just be quiet. You and your friend, both hoodlums. I have reported you to the police."
"What for?" Raj asked.
"Oh don't play innocent with me. Oh my God, what's to become of her?"
"What's happened?" Kranti asked in a whisper.
"You weren't satisfied were you? Running away and saying you are going to Amritsar when all along you were with your new friend here helping these men in their dastardly act." She hissed and snorted loudly.
"Kranti, you very bad………. What you did to Didi?" Lovely inserted.
"Didi?.......Where's Didi?" continued Kranti dumbfounded. "I don't know anything about her. I swear!"
"You liar!" shouted Mamiji.
Oops thought Awasthi as he saw the big ant struggle with the grain. It was lugging it along. What an exchange of words! He was new to this kind of bickering and he certainly had never seen any one quite like this woman in the room.
"Mamaji………Didi….." Kranti was worried now. She knew something terrible had happened. Mamiji was hopping mad, which meant that no one was ill or injured.
"Kranti ……." Began the husband.
"Shhhhhhh….. don't say a word. You always take up for this tramp. Who knows where she goes in the middle of the night. She has influenced my daughter and ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh…………………," mamiji began to shed tears.
"The police had come enquiring about you. Had you gone to Amritsar, they asked. I decided to tell them all about you." The dragon snarled.
Kranti shivered.
"They wanted to know about your KK ways. You a KK? They wanted to know if you were a part of some conspiracy. What fools they were! I told them you had other things to do. You had an even worse plan up your sleeve. You were ruining the life of your sister."
"I would never do that."
"I told the police to arrest you immediately since you were nothing but a fraud along with this man."
"Kranti ………… Didi is missing from yesterday. Where you took?"Lovely said.
"Took? I haven't seen Didi since the day I left …… that was 6 days ago."
"Stop lying ……….you ungrateful wretch. You and this man have both been accomplices in this crime."
"Crime……what crime?" Raj had narrowed his eyes but they were piercing enough for the woman to divulge.
"That friend of yours……….Sanjay came from nowhere in his fancy car. He honked and called out to Nirmal. Nirmal ran out to him though I was telling her not to. She got into the car and they drove off. Where are they? I'm sure you know! You get my daughter back this instant."
Kranti felt Raj's chest shaking with laughter behind her. She was irritated. How could he find this funny? She shrugged off his hands. He loosened his hold and she was free.
"Yes, Kranti……… where is Nirmal?" Raj asked. "How did you pull it off?"
Kranti's eyes were like saucers. What on earth……..?
"Just stop it, Raj."
Awasthi was looking at Kranti and Raj. He wasn't wondering what Raj was upto. He knew exactly what game Raj was planning. He was goading mamiji into making accusations at Kranti. That silly woman was falling like nine pins for the gag and was providing a perfect alibi for Kranti. And Kranti with her innate distrust of Raj was providing fodder for the plan to take off.
"Oh don't think you can wriggle out of it……" warned Raj mockingly. "Where is Nirmal? Everyone knows what you have been doing, so you may as well own up."
"That's not true. And you know it."
"I know nothing of the kind." Raj denied.
Mamiji was getting suspicious.
"Oh you think you're so clever. What would Kranti do alone without you there to guide her? I'm no fool, you no good son of a rich man! This is your hobby….. trapping innocent girls and wooing them. You too will be in police custody."
"I couldn't be in police custody even if you prayed for it."
Raj was annoying the woman and was enjoying every minute of it. "You won't be able to do that to me."
"You seem to be sure of that. But just you wait."
"You see," he pointed out, "I was with the British, travelling to Amritsar. So I am not worried at all."
The ant was a little annoyed. It had lost its food and all its efforts were in vain. It ran to the nearest object which happened to be a big foot. It climbed up the toe and bit as hard as it could.
"Yikes ………………..," screamed Mamiji. "Damn these ants."
