Part 4

The next morning, Nikki woke up early and prepared breakfast. She got ready in a hurry and waited impatiently for Abhi.

"Why are you taking so long?" she yelled, banging on the bathroom door.

"I am not late, you are early," he replied.

"Uff oh Abhi," she said. "Its my first day!"

He finally came out, with a towel wrapped around his waist. "You won't be late because I am never late!"

Nikki rolled her eyes. She sat down on the bed, picking up a maganize. She looked up and noticed Abhi standing there with his hands folded across his bare chest.

"Aab kya hua?" she asked, frustrated.

"I can't decide what to wear," he said.

Nikki stood up and walked to the wardrobe. "Itne bade ho gaye ho aur khud ki kapde nahin choose kar sakthe!"

"Kya karoon," he said, smiling. "Hamesha tum joh choose karthi ho."

Nikki handed him his clothes. "Yeah, but from tomorrow you will set your own alarm, make your own breakfast and pick your own clothes."

"Kyun?" he asked, putting on his shirt.

"Kyunki," she replied. "I am not your wife, remember. Today, I felt kind, issi liye yeh saab kar rahi hoon."

"Great," he grumbled. "I can't even be with you at home now."

Nikki walked forward, when Abhi caught her hand and pulled her back. His arms automatically went around her waist and Nikki stared up at him. "Since you are feeling all nice today, can you do my buttons? From tomorrow, I won't have such luck, right?"

"Right!" she clarified. She put on his buttons, while he played with her hair.

"I will miss you Nikki," he said quietly. "It sucks that I can't touch you, be with you or say that you belong to me."

"Are you trying to make me not go to Sanjeevani?" she asked, looking up with her eye brows raised.

Abhi rolled his eyes. "Go wait in the car. I will there in five minutes."

Nikki smiled and walked out. Even she didn't want to stay away from Abhi, but she was sick and tired of all those girls behind him. She wanted to show him that even she was capable of doing things. And on top of that, the way Abhi insulted her friends, because of his arrogance that he is the best doctor on earth – that was the limit.

In no time they reached Sanjeevani and Nikki was amazed to see the huge hospital in front of her. She was finally going to finish her internship and once she was done… maybe she could work along side Abhi…

He led her through the halls, quietly explaining some important rooms. Like he said, they were not late. Infact, the morning shift was going to start in an hour. He then led her to his cabin.

"And this," he said, gesturing to the huge room. "is your beloved husband's!"

"SHHH!" she said, putting her finger over her lips. "I am NOT your wife."

Abhi laughed and walked up to her. "What if I had a slip?"

"Don't you dare," she threatned, pointing her index finger at him. "Mr. Modi. If anything is messed up, then you won't be alive!"

"Chill Ms. Malhotra. I don't cheat!"

"Dekthe hain," she said, before turning around and walking to the door. But she stopped halfway and walked back.

"Oh," she said, holding up her left hand and taking out her engagement ring. "I won't be needing this now."

She picked up his hand and placed the ring on his palm. Abhi's fingers angrily closed upon his gift to her, but before he could say something, she walked out.

Nikki walked to the nursing station (with the help of some nurses), laughing at Abhi's expression. Well, good, she thought to herself. Its high time he should learn about me!

As she neared the front she noticed six people standing in two rows, facing each other. Standing at the front of the two lines was Abhi and another doctor, who had an air of strictness around her.

"And here she comes," Abhi said, pointing to Nikki.

Everyone turned toward her petite figure. She immedieately recognized the two muscular guys standing beside eachother… Rahul and Armaan. Their faces split into a wide smile as she walked forward and took her place with the rest of interns.

"Dr.Malhotra," the lady said. "I am Dr. Keerti Mehra, a senior doctor in Sanjeevani. Keep in mind that you are here to finish your intership, not to fool around. I expect you to be on time and treat your patients to the best of your ability. You are to report to me on a daily basis."

Keerti then handed a pager to Nikki, before continuing. "You are to be on-call all the time. So always respond to your pager, if not…" she didn't need to finish the sentence.

Nikki nodded, making a note of Keerti's firmness. She decided never to mess up with her.

"Interns," Keerti said to everyone else. "Jaise maine kaha, yeh Nikita Malhotra hai. I expect you all to show her around the first day."

"Aur haan," Abhi said. "Dr. Nikki–"

Nikki glared at him.

"–ta. Dr. Nikita, please don't forget that being a doctor is a huge responsibility. You have been hired because of your capabilities. Sanjeevani and for that matter even I have high expectations of you!"

She narrowed her eyes and answered sarcastically. "I will keep that in mind Dr. Modi."

As soon as Keerti left, Armaan walked forward and gave her a big hug.

"NIKKI!!" He yelled. "ITS BEEN SOO LONG!!"

He let go of her, but she was immediately pulled into a hug by Rahul.

"NIKKI!!" he said. "Itne din kaha rehagayi?"

A pang of jealousy hit Abhi as he watched his wife hug his rivals. Why was life so unfair? He walked away, trying to shake the image out of his head.

"Duffers," Nikki scolded. "College khatam hone ke baad, bade bade vaade kiye. Touch mein rahoonga, e-mail karoonga, phone karoonga. Magar kissi ne bhi koshish tak nahi ki!"

"Hello," Armaan defended. "Phone number kis ka badal gaya? Huh?"

"I e-mailed you the new number!"

"Yeah right," Rahul said. "Ek phone nahin kar sakthi thi."

"Shut-up Rahul," Nikki said. "Aur tumhari glasses aur nerdy kapde kahan gaye?"

"They were not nerdy clothes," he said, looking down.

"Yeah they were," Armaan said, laughing along with Nikki.

"Will you three stop talking and introduce the rest of us?" said a girl with curly hair.

Rahul pulled the girls hand and made her stand beside him. "Yeh Muskaan hai," he introduced. "My fianc!"

"Your kidding!" Nikki exclaimed.

Rahul smiled.

"Haan haan teek hai," Armaan said. He then pulled a girl dressed in a salwar kameez. "Yeh hai Ridhima," he introduced, with a smile.

"No way," Nikki said, her eyes bulging. She understood the reason behind Armaan's smile. "you are committed to one girl?"

"Armaan?" Ridhima said, her eyes narrowing.

"Basket," he said, shooting Nikki a look. "Yeh mazak kar rahi hai. Sirf mazak. Hain na Nikki?"

Rahul smirked. "Have fun Ammy. Chalo Muskaan." And both of them walked off hand in hand.

"Ek din, tak jaaungi Armaan," Ridhima said. "Tumhari affairs sunte sunte. Jao, mujhe tumse baat nahin karni."

And with that she walked away, with Armaan following her, yelling "Ridhima meri baat suno. Ridhima…"

Nikki started laughing. Her friends were in love. "Oh my god. Armaan… maine kabhi nahin soocha woh ek salwar kameez ladki se pyar karega."

"I know what you mean," said a tall, thin girl. "Maine bhi kabhi nahin soocha meri behen Armaan jaise ladke se pyar karegi. By the way, I am Anjali."

"Hi Anjali," Nikki said.

"Aur main Atul," said a boy, standing beside her.

"Hi," she said. "Nice to meet you guyz."

After saying goodbye to Atul and Anjali, Nikki walked to the general ward. Suddenly a hand caught her hand and pulled her into a corner. It was Abhi.

"Abhi," she gasped. "Kya kar rahe ho? Koi dekh lega toh?"

"What was that?" he demanded.

"What?" she asked, confused over his sudden anger.

"Why were those imbeciles hugging you?"

"Kaun? Armaan aur Rahul?"

"Aur kaun hoga? Samajthe kya hai woh dono?" he muttered. "How dare they touch my wife!!"

"HELLO," Nikki said, waving her hand in front of his face. "Main apki biwi nahin hoon."

"I don't care for this game anymore," Abhi said.

"Kyun?" she asked, enjoying his irritation. "Abhi abhi to shuru hua hai, Abhi."

"So what?" he said. "I don't give a damn anymore!"

"Itni jaldi haar mangaye?"

Abhi closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "Teek hai. Main chup rahoonga."

"Yeh hui na baat," she said, happily.

"Magar," he said in a dangerous voice. "Agar woh dono tumhe phir se chue, toh I swear, I will break their bones!"

Nikki kept that in mind, for Abhi seemed to be dead serious. "Oye," she said, diverting his mind. "Armaan black belt hai."

"Toh?" he asked. "Woh joh bhi ho, muhje se toh haare ga!"

"Kyun?" she said, smiling widely. "Jalan ho rahi hai?"

"Erm," he said, looking away. "Mujhe… mujhe kyun jalan hogi?"

"Then why do you care if they hug me?" she asked, smartly.

"Kyunki… kyunki… kyunki tum meri paatni ho!"

"Correction," she said. "Main tumhari patni thi. Hoon nahin."

"Right," he replied. "Joh bhi ho. Tum meri paatni thi, ho aur hamesha rahogi."

"Wah," she said, sarcastically. "Itni filmy dialogue maara hai."

"Saach toh hai."

"Joh bhi ho," she said. "You are jealous."

"Am not!"

"Its okay Abhi," she said, patting his shoulder. "Now you know how I feel when girls come and hug you!"

"So you get jealous?" he asked, smiling.

"Umm…" Nikki said, not really having an answer. "That's not the point. You are jealous!"

Abhi was tired to this argument. "So what if I am?"

Nikki smiled and walked away.

"Hey Nikki!" he called, after her.

She turned around and put her finger to her lips, as if saying 'Shhhhh…'

"Kuch toh baatao…" But too late, she disappeared around the corner.
