oh man this is a scary story lol. seems like kinda revenge that Jai is taking from Dixits by using Bani. I feel that for Bani its unfair to pay for the deeds of what pia did to Jai. But I also feel sorry for Jai, his past is the reason of his present, he is rich and famous today cz of of the heat of revenge..I wanna look forward to this ff too, at first I wasn't convinced about reading forward this story cz I didn't quite liked it because there's pia in it and I just dislike her character but now it seems really interesting!!!! please continue

Part 4

Bani turned to her side in the four-poster bed. A distinct smell invaded her nostrils and made her head pound every second. Her eyelids felt heavy and she had trouble opening her eyes. Her limbs felt sore and her back was hurting. Bani rubbed her eyes and bit by bit opened them. Her surroundings were different, her bed wasn't the same. With a jerk she sat up straight in bed and it was then that she saw her red attire. Her wedding saree, the one her mother chose from what seemed to her thousands of others, was wrinkled. Her chunari was dangling in the bun her aunts made by mere one pin and it was pulling on her hair, hurting her head. Bani was sure that her make-up must be smudged. She wondered what her cousins would say about the efforts they made, would she see Bani in this state. Bani looked next to her. The bed was empty on her left side. It looked unslept in. Bani wondered when she exactly fell asleep. She had waited for her husband until the wee hours of the morning, but he did not come in. Bani wondered where he was. The last thing she heard from his relatives, was that he was sitting with his colleagues and cousins. Did something happen? Something serious? At once this feeling gripped her. A warning feeling. Something wasn't right, there is going to happen something. Bani quickly got out of bed and looked for her suitcase. She then noticed the beauty of the room. Strings of flowers were dangling from the ceiling, surrounding the bed. Candles were strategically placed in the room so there would not be a chance of fire.

Next to the bed there were incense sticks in glasses filled with rice. That was the smell that woke Bani. Last night Bani had been to nervous and too tired to notice all this.

Bani found her suitcase next to a cupboard, tucked away in a corner. There were two suitcases actually. One was filled with her books and other things she needed for University. The other was filled with her clothes. Bani took out that one and laid it down on the floor. She opened the suitcase and chose a maroonsaree to wear, as he mother had told her to do. She took the blouse and petticoat out of the suitcase, along with her innerwear. She then saw a small case in which she had packed her watch and other jewellery and took that along with her and her toothbrush and towel. Bani walked in the bathroom after opening two other door that had led her to nowhere. She stood in front of the mirror and stared at this strange woman in front of her. This women had sindoor in her parting, heavy jewellery on her body, a mangalsutra around her neck, dressed in red and standing in a strange bathroom. One month ago she was just 23 year old Bani Prarthna Dixit. She had her mother, her father and her sister along with her uncles and aunts. Now, a month after her 23rd birthday, she was Bani Prathna Walia-Dixit and she doesn't only have her own family, but she had a husband and in-laws.

Bani searched for each and every pin in her coiffure. Her hair looked liked a bird had made his nest in it. Bani stripped of her clothes and jewellery and stepped into the showercabin. The warm water eased her tensed muscles and she washed her hair three times before she managed to get out all the hairspray. 'Just a little while more. Bani thought when she realized that would have to end her shower. She eventually did get out of the showercabin and got dressed. Bani had the hardest time putting sindoor in her parting. She wanted to do it perfect, like she always liked to watch her mother do when she was a girl, but Bani gave up in the end and wiped the excess of the powder from her nose.

Are beta, itni jaldi kaise uth gayi.

Bani bend down to touch mausis feet. Aise hi. she answered.

Mausi cupped her cheek affectionately. No one is up yet, everyone is tired. Tu bhi thora aaraam kar leti na.

Im fine. Aap ki kuch madad karu?'
' Are nahin, you cant do anything. It's a custom. Tu bas baith mere paas.' Mausi was set to make arrangements for breakfast after she guided Bani to the temple to take blessing. Every time Bani wanted to touch something to help Mausi, she received a warning glare. Bani looked around the huge house. Out of the kitchen she could see a big hall and several doors. All of the doors were closed. At the end of the hall was a staircase that led to the bedrooms, her husband's as well. Bani wondered where he was. Was everything alright with him? Bani pondered over the question whether she should ask Mausi about his whereabouts but she thought against it. What would she think? Mauis was busy doing several things at the same time when Bani saw that slowly the entire house was awakening and the members came down one by one. Bani sat on her chair in the kitchen when they all came in and wished her a good morning. She touched the feet of the people who were older then her and wished the others. She met Samar, the small guy who attended her birthdayparty, again. He didn't not forget her but immediately jumped on her lap. Everyone took a seat around the table and they were ready to have breakfast when Bani noticed that one chair was empty and her husband was missing. At the same time, in a corner of the room, a door opened and Jai came out in big strides. He wished everyone and sat in the empty chair at the head of the table. Bani was made to sit at his side, without realizing who was going to sit next to her. She looked at him, she wanted him to look at her , smile towards her, say something, but he didn't. He filled his plate with delicious items, talked to his family, but not once did he look in Bani's direction. Bani lowered her eyes eventually and toyed with her food. She didn't know what to do until she heard Mausi call her name and inform her about the women coming over for her 'Muh dikhaai' around noon. After that Jai and Bani had to go to Banis parents' house for a dinner. Just the two of them. Bani nodded and was soon whisked away to her room by her sisters-in-law and her niece to get dressed up.

Bani was mum the whole time. Their teasing made her feel uneasy. She knew that it would happen, but nothing like everyone had assumed happened on her wedding night. Even today they thought that Jai and Bani were not looking at each other because they felt shy. How could Bani explain that she was feeling a lot of things, but not shyness at this stage. She was worried, scared, feeling sick at the same time, but not feeling shy.

Bani had her make-up done. It was too heavy to her taste, but she didn't complain or stop them. Her sisters-in-law were too excited and she didn't want to kill the environment. Her sari was good according to them. Jigyasa got the chunnari from Banis weddingdress, pinned it on Bani's head and brought her downstairs where a lot of women had already gathered. Mausi lifted they veil and lots of 'ooh's ' and 'aah's ' followed. Bani was gifted rings, sets, money and all the customary things along with the compliments. 'bari naseebwaali hai to, ki itni acchi bahu mili hai.'

A few of them told mausi. 'Dekh na chehra kaisa khil raha hai. Kadh kaath bhi theek hi hai. jori achhi hai.' Others told mausi.

But as usual there was woman who had to make a comment that would bring silence in the party 'Gori nahin hai to kya huwa? Hain na?'

Bani smiled outwardly, but her heart shattered on the inside. She was afraid that everyone would be able to hear it in the ear deafening silence that followed. She thought that she had gotten used to these comments being the darkest in the family, but today it only added to the pain she was feeling. Could this be one of the reasons her husband is avoiding her, not even looking at her? Did he not find her attractive?

'Aap ki bahu to bahot gori hai, hai na? Din bhar bahaar ghumti rehti hai to kya huwa?' Jigyasa sneered at the woman. The woman gritted her teeth and mumbled something before she attacked another sweet on her plate. Jigyasa sat down next to Bani. 'Don't listen to her. Iski aadat hai fizul ki baatein karna.'

Banis head was already bent. She only shook her head and appreciated the hug she received. 'Now tell me. Did Jai find his name in your mehndi?'

Bani shook her head and heard some giggles. 'Don't worry, tonight there is another chance.' Bani sighed, the only thing she could do. She hoped that the uneasy feeling she was having would turn out to be baseless.

Hours later Bani got ready to go to her parents. She wanted to change but they all thought she looked very pretty in this saree and made her wear it. Bani just when to the bathroom and wash her face. In a corner she saw men's clothes lying on the floor. A towel was drying on the railing. Her husband did come in this room. Bani was applying some light make-up when she heard the door to the room open. She left the bathroom and went to the bedroom to check who it was. Hesitantly she smiled in the direction of the door. Jai had walked in with his mobile in his hand while looking at the screen. He stopped in his track when he saw her come out of the bathroom. His expressions changed and Bani could swear that he was gritting his teeth when he saw her. He actually was. The only thing Jai could think of when he saw his 'wife' in his room was Pia. He saw her once like this. Just the situation was different. The thought that he had to visit her parents now irked him. There was no way he was going to act like the good son-in-law. Not after what they did to him.

Bani saw Jai stand still with his mobile in his hand. He was thinking about something and was zoned out somewhere far from her. 'Ji, aapko kuch chaahiye?' Bani asked him and broke his reverie. He shrugged his head and turned around. 'Jaldi chalo, I don't like waiting.' He said curtly and walked out of the room. Bani followed him with a big frown but expressed nothing. After informing the rest of the family they left.

'Are you all right?' Bani asked when they were sitting in the car. 'Hmm.' Was the only answer she received. Jai was driving in total silence. The one question Bani could ask to start a conversation ended. She racked her brain to find another topic, but the silence in the car, Jai's posture and her own nerves didn't help her. After thirty long minutes of silence and only hearing the engine roar in the car, Jai pulled up in front of the Dixit residence.

'Get out of the car. Jais voice didn't hold a request. It was an order. Startled by this behaviour Bani got out. She didn't know what else to do. She was never talked to in such a manner. Jai got his shades out of his coat and wore them. Bani noticed that he did not turn of the engine but instead he pressed the accelerator. The engine roared in protest.

With her hand still placed on the car door Bani stood there watching Jai.

Aap nahin aayenge?'

'Darwaaza band karo!' he told her. Bani shut the door and figured he might go to park the car. She saw him drive towards the gate where all the other cars were parked, but instead of turning left he drove out of the gate. Bani stood there watching Jai, watching him drive through the gate and turn to the busy road. She just stood there, stunned by his actions, staring at the road where the car had disappeared and that is how her mother found her a few minutes later and ushered her in the house where she was buried in several pairs of arms and was been hugged like she had been away from them for centuries. Bani realized in what position she was when her aunt asked her where her husband was. In a voice, quite alien to her, she heard herself say. 'He got an important call. Something with work. Unko jaana para. He send his apologies.'

Her family seemed to understand her, they nodded their heads and commented about how they understood his position and how work was important too.

Her mother stroke her hair and made Bani sit down next to her. Bani was fighting to hold back her tears, not break down and tell everyone, but what would she tell them? Instead she joined everyone at the dining table and heard them talk to each other about the fun things that had happened in the wedding ceremonies, how much they missed her and how pretty she looked. Bani heard everything but commented on nothing. Her mind was preoccupied to react. An hour later she only noticed that her sister wasn't here with a few of her cousins.

'Ma, didie, Minu aur Shaina kahan hai?'

' Bahar gaye hai, Pia zid kar rahi thi usko kahin jaana hai.'

'She didnt know that I was coming?' Bani asked.

'Yes she knew, but she said she will meet you some other time. Her mother told her.

Bani lowered her head dejected. Mujhe unse milna tha. We haven't been able to talk since the engagement. Is she mad at me?'

'No, she isnt mad at you beta.' Nishikant assured her. 'Tu bhi to busy thi, humne mana kiya tha. she shouldn't disturb you.'

Bani nodded her head but still wished her sister was here for her on such an important occasion. The family gathering felt incomplete without first, her brother-in-law and now her sister. Bani often wondered what went wrong between the two of them. Pratham, her brother-in-law, was crazy about Pia and even Pia had consented to the match after she saw Pratham. For so many years everything was fine. Suddenly it went wrong but neither Pratham, nor Pia told anything about the reason for their divorce.

The dinner ended after a few hours. Too soon to Banis liking. Her mother took her to her room to give Bani something. Kiran seated Bani on the bed and gave her the chain she had ordered for her daughter. Bani had refused heavy jewellery, knowing that she would never wear them. Hence Kiran and Nishikant decided to give her simple gold sets she could wear elegantly with day-to-day clothes, as with dresses for special occasions.

Bani hugged her mother and when her father came to check on them she hugged him to. Both of them sat on the bed and Bani placed her head in her mother's lap.

' Sab theek to hai na?' her father asked her. Bani nodded, she lied again, but couldn't stop the tears in her eyes. Nishikant was stroking Bani's hair. 'why are you crying then?'

'I....I miss you........I miss you a lot.'
Bani managed to say in broken sentences.

'Aap ke bina accha nahin lagta mujhe, I don't want to go back.' Bani hugged her mother's waist and buried her face deeper in Kiran's lap.

Nishikant laughed with a crack of sadness in his voice. ' Who wants to send their children away? Par jaana to parega na baccha. You are married now. You have another family waiting for you. You have to win their harts, make you place in that house. You have been a wonderful daughter, fulfilled every duty, now you have to do the same to your in- laws. And we know that you will never disappoint us. You will be a good wife and a good daughter-in-law. Hai na?'

More tears flowed from Banis eyes 'I'm not sure papa. I already feel like a disappointment to you. she thought.

Nishikant bend over and kissed Bani on her cheek before he pulled her on her feet.

Come, time for you to go home. Jai will be on his way to pick you up.

Im not sure papa. He might be busy.

Ah, even better. Her father cheered. Ill have some more time with my baby. Mai tumko drop kar dunga and well take those duffer uncles of you with us.

Bani smiled in between her tears and prayed that there would be no questioning when she returned to the Walia Mansion. After all, they thought that Jai and Bani were together and Bani wasn't sure whether the white lie she told here would work there too.

An hour later she found herself in the Walia Mansion again. Her father only came in to greet the family. No one asked anything because Jai entered the house a few minutes later, unaffected by everything. He just walked upstairs. Banis eyes followed him until she saw the door close behind him. A lot of time to muse on that she didn't have because soon she was engaged in several conversations by her new family. Bani smiled half-heartedly when she was required to and nodded when she thought she had to until she yawned and mausi shoed her and the rest to their bedrooms to sleep. When Bani entered the room she found a pillow and a quilt on the sofa. Jai was lying sprawled on the bed.
