Jai stood, filling the doorway as he looked at his woman. That blush he had come to be so familiar with now adorned her morning face. He must have roused her, or maybe she had been awake a while as she nervously tucked her hair behind her ear. He smiled. Yes, he had slept amazingly well the previous night. It was all too clear to him and he didn't want another second to go by without branding her as his now, and definitely on their way to forever. It was the best feeling in the world to have a woman who let a man be a man, and not let the unattractiveness of the feminist woman today mar the beauty of knowing the simple gift of yourself to a man who understands the value of the gift, will always result in you winning his heart. That woman could make a man do whatever she wanted...and she wouldn't have to ask twice. Well he had found one of these rare creatures, and he would be damned if he let her go anywhere besides with him.
"Sleep well?" he asked, coming in and shutting the door, but not taking his eyes off her. She nodded shyly but didn't say a word, ducking behind the curtain of her hair at his intense scrutiny. He gave his customary smile, "I bought you something."
She managed to look up at that time as he pulled her to the sofa off to the right end of the room. He sat her down and for the second time in less than twenty four hours, kneeled before her. Taking out the little blue box, as he, at the last moment thought to ditch the traditional little black box and get her something a little different.
"I promised I would get you this first thing in the morning," he said, opening up the little black box to reveal the glittering rind embedded in the folds of the black velvet encasing the box.
What he didn't tell her was how he got back to his room and immediately called the hotel management to get in touch with the Swarovski outlet a distance away in one of the popular malls to open up their store as he would like to come pick something out. Better the store manager alone as he wanted no publicity at all. This was very private and he would like to keep it that way. The store manager Mr Singh had been more than elated, he had noted with more than a little amusement. But he was in a good mood and for once, people's adoration of him did not grate on his nerves. Not that he minded all the time, it got the job done most of the time. He had gone through rows and rows of gorgeous looking diamond rings set in different stones.
Some were more bold than others but he knew bold had never been Bani's style. In the end he had picked out a simple enough diamond ring held in place by emerald stones. The band was slim but visible enough and when it caught the glare of light, it shone brightly. It was understated but eye catching nonetheless.
"Now," Jai said, taking her hand and holding the ring at the tip of her finger. You haven't changed your mind between yesterday and this morning right?"
She was taken aback for a second, then smiled mischievously, "Do you want me to?" She giggled uncontrollably at his raised brow.
"Well then my love, please accept this ring as a token of my love and commitment to you," he said sombrely, slipping the ring unto her finger, thinking to himself, perfect fit.
She held up her hand to the light to appreciate it and gasped at the play of lights when a sliver of sunlight caught the stone at an angle.
"It's so beautiful," she sighed, then looked into his intense looking eyes, "I love it."
"Good," he said, getting up and pulling her up to her feet with him. However, before he could say another word, there was a rap on the door. Jai frowned, "Expecting someone?"
The coo-cooing of the boys was all the giveaway they needed to know it was her parents at the door. Bani's expression immediately became alarmed as she realized all of a sudden how this must look to them should they see Jai here. He turned to her, hearing her faint gasp, and her expression let him in on what she was thinking.
"You worry too much," was all he said before going over to the door and pulling it open to meet the first, surprised, then comprehending look of her parents, and the involuntary shrug they seemed to mentally and physically give as they entered the room, acknowledging Jai's greeting.
"Morning beta, how did you sleep?" Nishikant asked as he handed a leaning Atharva over to Jai.
"Beautifully well thank you Sir," he said, bouncing a gurgling Atharva up and down.
"Kaise hai app Bani?" her mother asked, a small smile playing on her lips at Bnani's obvious discomfort at them having walked in when they did.
"Theek hoon Ma. Aap log?" she asked, nervously taking Krishna from her and hugging him to her, momentarily forgetting her discomfort as she cooed to a happy child who decided bouncing along with her was even more fun, "You have grown a lot since I last saw you."
A hyper Krishna squealed and gurgled happily away, as if clearly understanding what she had said to him.
"They missed you two," Kiran said, giving Bani a knowing look.
"Nothing happened Ma, I swear!" she whispered fiercely to her mother who had the effrontery to laugh at her defence of herself.
"Of course nothing happened Bani," she patted her daughter's hand, and then stopped when she felt something cold against her skin. Curiously she looked down at her daughter's hand, and when it registered what she was looking at, she gasped loud enough to get everyone's attention. "Bani!"
Bani looked at Jai who smiled in understanding of her mother having seen her ring, nodded to Bani to take her Mum into the room while he spoke with her father. Better now than later anyway.
"Kiran?" Nishikant questioned, looking at his stunned wife's expression.
"Come Ma," Bani said, dragging her mother along with her as they made their way to her bedroom.
As soon as she shut the door Kiran bombarded her with question after question, causing Bani to smile and take her time as she settled the boys in their high-back chairs which the Resort management had kindly provided.
"Bani Dixit if you don't tell me what in the world is going on right this minute..." her mother huffed, after the customary 'how...when...why didn't you tell me sooner' barrage of questions Kiran fired at her.
"Chill yaar," Bani said, swinging around to face her mother, eyes shining with mischief, "Shant ho jao. Mein pehle ek shower karle. Phir mein tum saab kuch bata denge. Ok?"
She dashed into the bathroom while her mother sat and played with the kids. Even the boys could tell she was impatient. At a point she sidled up to the door to try to listen in on the soft voices of Jai and her husband from the living room, as she knew Nishikant was right now being privy to the news she was yet to get out of Bani. Indignant when she couldn't hear a thing, she harrumphed and came back to sit in front of the boys.
"Tum hari Ma bhi na," she said, throwing up her hands, as Atharva gurgled happily into his fist, watching her in amusement, "Mujhe hanisha musibat de. Baatnameez."
"Nah!" Krishna exclaimed all of a sudden, startling Kiran, before giggling excitedly at having caught her attention.
"Aap bhi bura hai. Baadmash," she grumbled at him, tweaking his cherubic face as she again turned to play with them.
Bani emerged a few minutes later, clean and pink from her quick, hot shower. She proceeded to throw on a salwaar kameez which was not normally her outfit of choice but given the occasion, she felt it was quite appropriate. Her mother watched her comb her hair, all the while humming to herself as she ran the big comb through her silken tresses. She did not want to wash her hair today as drying it would take forever given the circumstances.
Kiran had finally had enough and getting to her feet, she grabbed a surprised Bani's arm and pulled her after her until she got to the bed.
"Sit," Kiran ordered, causing Bani to laugh as she settled herself on the bed and winking at her sons who happened to be enthralled by the sudden sound of her laughter, "Now tell me."
Bani started at the beginning and journeyed her mother through the entire evening of surprising spontaneity on Jai's part. It was no surprise that in the end her mother was sniffling and slowly wiping tears from her eyes as she gazed lovingly at her daughter.
"Do you really think you can be happy with him?" her mother asked softly.
She looked at her boys who gave her wide toothless grins as they gurgled and waved their arms frantically at her as if to cheer her on, "We would be happy Ma. I have absolutely no doubt about his love for me. And the boys."
Her mother nodded, her lips trembling as she tried not to let the excitement stroke trepidation she felt, overwhelm her. "We prayed Bani...we prayed that a man like Jai would come and take you away but after everything...it just..."
Bani reached out and held her mother's hands, "I prayed too Ma, but like you I was always afraid. What if I was asking for the moon?...what if I was only dreaming that he...Jai...would see me that way..." she paused, shaking her head, "Now...now it's all in the past. He loves us...we love him...whatever comes, we'll get through it. Together."
"Mein bahut khush ho Bani," her mother said, pulling her into a hug.
Just then there was a soft knock on the door and Jai's soft but masculine voice called out to Bani from outside the room.
"Aari hoon," Bani called, laughing through her tears as she wiped them and hurried to the door. She opened it to see her father, standing tall and smiling fully at her, tears brimming in his eyes.
"I had dreamed of this day for long my dear," he said, opening up his arms to his daughter, "I wanted to believe it was possible but..." his voice trailed off as he looked at his wife who stood wiping her tears as she watched them, "Come. We have to do this the right way."
They returned to the living room where Jai stood, bouncing an ecstatic Krishna in his arms. He looked up as they approached and gave Bani a conspiratorial wink. Naturally she blushed as she caught her mother's knowing eye.
Her mother pushed her into the couch and then draped her with her pallu. Next, she went to take Krishna from Jai and shooed him toward the couch, "Bet jao," she said, motioning Jai to go sit next to Bani on the couch. Holding out her hand to Bani, she motioned her to return the ring to Jai, who took it from her and returned it to the box. Atharva had began to protest the lack of attention and Nishikant had to pick him up to keep him from wailing out loud.
"Normally this would be done with a lot of flair and a lot more people in attendance," her father began, "But seeing as we were all taken unawares, we will have to make do. Jai, I have only known you for a few weeks. And seeing the condition my daughter was in, it is only a great man who can get past all of that to decide that a woman with children is whom he would like to spend the rest of his life with. For that I am eternally grateful. Still, I would ask you to think carefully, for there will be challenges to face. If not from your family, then from the society. Do you promise her and now that in disregard of all others you will always stick by my daughter?"
"I promise Sir," Jai said softly, looking him in the eye.
"Thank you beta," Nishikant said, heaving a sigh of relief. At least this was a promise that should he forget, was mde in the presence of them all, "Then there's nothing else to be said. Would you please place the ring on her finger?"
"Gladly," he said, taking Bnai's dainty hand and for the second time that morning, slipped the ring onto Bani's finger, holding her gaze lovingly.
Kiran quickly gave Krishna to his mother and fled into the kitchen to see what she could find that could pass for sweets. She found some cake in the fridge and cutting it up, placed it in a dish and rushed back, holding it out first to Bani.
"Lo," she said, motioning Bani to feed Jai a small piece. Shyly she complied, and Jai nipped her finger in the process, causing her to jump and then colour fiercely. Kiran held the plate out to him and then he fed her in the same wise.
"Ammm!" Atharva suddenly gurgled, and Krishna followed suit, making similar noises to his brother and waving their arms frantically.
"I suppose they're giving their approval as well," Jai said, reaching out to take Atharva who was leaning towards him out of Nishikant's arms.
"Bani," her father continued, "Jai has suggested we hold the ceremony a month from now, all things being equal."
Kiran gasped, "Only a month? That doesn't leave time for anything!"
Bani's questioning gaze on Jai prompted him to answer, "Why prolong the inevitable? Besides, for your own good I might have to stay away from you the entire time of the waiting process. Isn't that cruel enough a punishment I have to pay for loving you?"
"But we won't have enough time to prepare," Kiran protested.
"We have been preparing for a long time Kiran. All we have to do is set in motion what we already planned a long time ago," Nishikant said happily, his chest puffed to ensure that his to-be son-in-law did not think they could not afford to marry their daughter off with style.
"Rest assured Maa-ji, we will not spare any expense at all," Jai said, "My Bani is worth everything. We can pick a date within the next few weeks best suited to all of us so that whatever preparations need to be made, we can work towards it."
Bani blushed deeply at the display of the two most important men in her life. Well she wasn't about to argue with Jai. She knew him well enough such that when he made up his mind, that was it. No turning back. She had huffed and puffed many times but she could never quite get him to completely change his mind. They always came to an impasse then he threw her a bone. She had since learned to subtly nudge him in the right direction. She hoped that all would really go as they had planned. God let it please be so...for all their sakes. She couldn't let her parents' hearts break again because of another failed attempt at marriage.
She looked at Jai to find his gaze fixed on her. He gave her his customary smile which actually was not really a smile and that made her smile fully. It would all be okay...he was with her na? Sab theek hoon jaaye ga.
