Part Fourteen
It was 6.30pm and it was dark outside, and the electricity had gone off and naina had looked in every nook and corner for a candle, the doors and windows were open as it was stuffy, she was grateful that Prachi was asleep or else she would have had more of a problem, now that she had found a candle her next quest was to find a way to light it, after a lot of searching she found an age old lighter, suddenly she heard footstep and she shivered, it couldn't be him is what she thought, because those footsteps sounded familiar, but in a few seconds she saw him at the door, it had been 3 years and this fact hit her like a lightning, she was standing a little inside the room and he came in and locked the door from inside.
"Raj, what are you doing here"
"What I should have done 3 years back"
And he fell on his knees and joined his hands infront of her and slowly started weeping
"Naina, I know its late, very very late and I cant return the 3 years of your life, but I want to say sorry for my foolishness"
"Saying sorry is not going to reverse the damage u have done Raj"
Even though she said this her heart was crying seeing him crying
"Did Sonali tell u?"
"No Sonali didn'tell me, I heard her"
And he narrated the whole incident to her of the way he had followed them
"Why did u do this Raj?? If you knew I didn't want to meet u then why did u come here"
"Because I love u Naina, and I cant live without you"
"Well, that wasn't the way tht u put it 3 years back"
"I know Naina, I was a jerk at that time and I agree with that"
He got up from the floor and went forward and held her by the shoulders, and said
"Don't you want me now? Don't you love me now?"
Naina looked into his eyes and saw the sincerity in them and that threw her off balance
"Raj these three years hav been like a nightmare for me, going to a foreign land, bringing up a kid, its not been easy"
"And so what is the practicality in continuing wid the same nighmare"
Naina just turned away
"Naina it was meant to be this way, we were meant to meet and that's why u are here infront of me, if destiny is giving me one more chance then why are you taking it away from me??"
"Raj its always easier said than done, I don't want to go through the mental trauma again"
"So you are scared that our relationship will fail this time as well"
Naina looked at him and gave him a nod
"Naina I promise u, it will not be the same, if you are with me then ill make every effort to change"
"And why do you have to change?? Its better that we stay apart Raj, I don't want to change anybody"
"Naina every relationship has to have some level of compromise and adjustment, in these 3 years I have realized that, that was one thing that we never understood that in a relationship you have to accommodate and give eachother space"
Naina looked into his eyes and couldn't help but see the truthfulness, what he was saying was right
"But Raj even if we give eachother another chance what is the guarantee that something like what happened the last time will not happen again"
"Naina there is no guarantee for anything I the world, all we can try to do is be patient and everything will be fine, we are 3 years elder now, have seen bad days"
Suddenly their conversation was broken by a cry from the bedroom, the 2 of them ran inside and saw Prachi crying, for the first time Raj saw his kid and felt like a father, he saw Naina trying to pacify her and realized what she musthv gone through all these years with no fault of hers, Raj suddenly went forward to gather Prachi in his arms. And Naina gave her to him willingly
Prachi looked at him but cudnt recognize him but after he carried her to the hall and she saw his face in the dim light and recognized him at once from the photographs Naina had
"Dada"
And she hugged him and kissed him tight
Raj really hadn't expected this, and this sudden gesture from Prachi reduced him to tears
Standing in the shadows Naina also started crying
"Iam sorry beta, I am probably the worst dad in the world, a dad who doesn't even know his daughters name"
And he looked at naina, and she understood
"Prachi come to Mama now"
But Prachi was adamant and clung to raj
Raj walked upto Naina and hugged her, and Naina too reciprocated
"I am sorry Naina, I am very sorry"
And he kissed her on her forehead
"I know it will be difficult for you, after all the trouble u have gone through but I think its high time we get together not for our sakes for atleast for the sake of Prachi"
Naina couldn't help but agree with him, because she also knew that her daughter deserved to have a family,
They ate dinner that night and called Sonali and told her about what had happened and Sonali burst out with tears of happiness
The night was a beautiful night, which was spent with Raj and Naina on either side of Prachi just telling eachother of the years they spent without eachother
