My green valley

Twenty questions on J&K with Qazi Touqeer and you're none the wiser.

Lalitha Suhasini

WHILE Kashmir was quaking, Srinagar's newest poster boy was stirring up his own storm on a reality show. The news hit home only when a television channel called him for a byte. ''We weren't allowed to read the papers or watch TV and I didn't even have access to a phone,'' defends Qazi Touqeer.

He's bound by a two-year contract with Sony Music and hopes to do a show in Srinagar for the quake victims, involving all the Fame Gurukul finalists. ''But nothing is in my hands,'' he adds rather dramatically.

The Fame Gurukul winner mouths lines like "Maine toh abhi duniya dekhi hi nahin (I'm yet to see the world)" for effect, but after a chat you realise that Touqeer has lived in sweet oblivion for 20 years.

Ask him about being born in Srinagar at a time when social unrest was at its peak, and he talks about untapped talent back home because of ''lack of facilities.'' Err, India's very own Bo Bice is as disconnected from the rest of the world as the next Bollywood hero wannabe.

His vision of the Valley is right out of a photograph that his dada had showed him when he was a kid. ''Yeh shaayad nabbe saal purani hogi (Maybe it's 90 years old),'' he says of the idyllic view of Kashmiris in pherans, carrying kangdis on a snowy evening.

And while the rest of the world has been shocked by the shellings and blood-stained streets, Touqeer confesses that he'd rather look at the other side. ''I've never witnessed a killing.

We used to run out of our college whenever there was news of a bombing,'' says the SP College alumni, seeming rather distracted.

He politely reminds you of his show and his one-point agenda in life. ''I've been bindaas shooting myself with a Sony handycam at the Mughal gardens,'' he says, sounding more like a Bambaiyya than the son of a lawyer-turned-Sufi buff.

Ironically, he never wanted to be a singer and rambles on about having memorised tragic hero Devdas' famous words Kaun kambakth bardaash karne ko peeta hai.... ''Mujhe toh sangeet ka sa re ga ma pa nahin aata hai (I don't know the basics of music),'' he says.

A young girl who's walking her Alsatian and has got wind of Touqeer's recording comes over.

''Actually I don't like you at all, but my mother's a big fan and will be very happy if she knows I said hi to you,'' she says. Unfazed, he thanks her and tells her that he likes her spirit.

Nothing seems to burst that bubble of hedonism. Not even the news of a new chief minister for J&K. ''Oh you're the first one to tell me about it,'' he says wide-eyed.

The modern day Devdas is too busy making his own headlines.

Gehi's Gurukul experience

"Suddenly people have discovered a new facet to Ajay Gehi — that he can sing and dance and be a performer," says the actor. But the fact is, I began as a singer. During college days (at H R), my claim to fame was singing.

I used to regularly belt out English tracks, especially hip-hop. Post-college, modelling happened and then acting, and singing took a backseat. It is like when you approach a production house and say you can act, sing, dance and write.

They will tell you make up your mind and do one thing. I took to acting. At the Gurukul, I was the top-rated singer; everyone knew I was the winner; the cameras even focussed on me when the winner was to be announced.

But eventually, it was Amit Sareen who was declared winner. All that I can say is that everyone knows how these contests are conducted and how winners are selected.

Where has Miilee's Rahul gone?
By: Shaheen Parkar
November 8, 2005

Rahul gaya Elvis ban ne: Ajay Gehi
Pag ghungroo bandh Meera nachi thi and Goli maar bheje mein — after belting out these two Bollywood chartbusters on Sony's Celebrity Fame Gurukul, Miilee's Rahul (Ajay Gehi) struck the high notes. But on the serial front, Ajay's character Rahul has disappeared from Star Plus daily, Miilee.

The telly buzz was that Ajay was initially busy with the Gurukul shoot and after its completion, in a mood to savour the taste of being a singer.

What's interesting is the fact that his character is missing from the scenario just when the daily reaches its biggest highpoint, and Miilee (Mona Wasu) learns about her true identity as Vishal Rastogi's (Kiran Kumar) daughter, in whose house she works as a maid.

Time lag

So why is Ajay not shooting for Miilee even post Gurukul? "At the Gurukul, we were not allowed mobile phones. They would be taken away prior to the shoot and returned late at night," says Ajay. "The only time I could return all the missed calls was around midnight – the time when those people's phones were in an answering machine mode."

Elvis mode

It is learnt that all the communication between the actor and the producers was through missed calls and text messages. "I have no clue when I will shoot next for Miilee," says Ajay.

"I have not yet been told anything. I used to receive messages from Radhika (the producer) after watching me on Gurukul, saying, 'Hi Elvis, you rock with your pelvic moods', to which I once replied, 'Elvis has left the building'."

New track for Miilee

Says producer Radhika Kumar, "When Ajay decided to take part in Celebrity Fame Gurukul, we had to alter our storyline. Miilee is a daily, so obviously, he could not manage a daily soap shoot with the Gurukul. We had to show that his character, Rahul, was away in Mumbai. As he is not shooting with us, we had to incorporate a new track for Miilee's high point. We had to make Father Manuel, Hirlal and Dadima key players, instead of Rahul, in revealing Miilee's true identity."

So when does Gehi shoot again? "We know he has finished with Gurukul but he is not part of the current shoot schedule so he will not be seen in the drama even in the coming episodes," says Radhika. "I guess he wants to sing now after Gurukul. He is still in that mood and has not got back to us," she adds.

"Post Celebrity Fame Gurukul, there have been offers my way for stage shows. People have realised that I can not only act but sing as well; I can be a performer," points out Ajay, who has two interesting offers on the film front. "I really don't know when I will shoot for Miilee again. I am waiting for their call," he says.

Meanwhile, Miilee will have to grapple with her new identity alone as the actor and the producers figure out the communication gap due to the missed calls and unreplied text messages. Blame it on technology?

Reality show bites young rock music lovers

Reality shows like Indian Idol, Zee Cine Stars ki Khoj and Fame Gurukul have made stars out of talented youngsters like Abhijeet Sawant, Sarwar Ahuja and Qazi. Now, after working magic in the fields of acting and singing, the reality show bug will bite young rock music lovers all over the country.

The Hero Honda and Pepsi Campus Rock Idols is a new reality show that will take off from November 12. This talent hunt begins at the city level where different colleges in the city will compete with each other. The next level of compe tition is against winners from other cities and finally the best regional bands compete at the national level, vying to be the best rock band in the country.

Rock music enthusiasts in the city are waiting excitedly. Says Joel of St Mary's, "Our college doesn't have an official college band. But now that this talent hunt is around the corner, we will form an official band. We are a group of six guys and all of us are convinced that this is our only chance to fame."

The second innings of Campus Rock Idols, "Tour of 2005" will be held across India in 12 cities over a two-month period, commencing from November 12 and culminating on December 16. The grand finale will be held in Goa. This year, apart from prominent figures from the music industry, the jury will include the popular Finnish rock band, The Rasmus.

What excites the college rock bands in the city are the attractive prizes on offer. Says Rebecca of St Ann's College, "This opportunity is like a dream come true. Apart from offering a platform to perform on a professional and technical level, the show also gives us a chance to perform alongside an international icon! Could we ask fro more".

Adds Jude D'cruz from Wesley College, "That's not all. The runners-up get cash prizes and other opportunities to showcase their talents too. I'm really looking forward to this event. Though we don't have a college band, a couple of us interested in rock music have decided to come together and form a band. It's better late than never."

Unfortunately, only aspiring amateur bands at the campus level can participate and that leaves local bands cribbing.
