Fame Gurukul doesn't start here till next week. It actually looks like an awesome show! It will definetly be as popular as Indian Idol, but I think that II will always have an advantage over FG cuz it started first and the Idol series is known more around the worl than Fame Academy, Fame Gurukul etc.

Fame Gurukul takes off

Posted online: Friday, July 01, 2005 at 0000 hours IST

"Fame Gurukul takes off where Indian Idol left. It is taking a step ahead," declared Ila Arun at a conference where the 14 finalists chosen by her were introduced to the media. Premiering on June 27, at 8.30 pm. Fame Gurukul will trace the gruelling journey of 14 talented hopefuls of which only two will be crowned the 'Fame Jodi'. The two talented superstars have to prove their mettle to a hard nosed jury comprising Javed Akhtar, Shankar Mahadevan, KK and the viewers. The winners will walkaway with a recording contract with Sony-BMG and a contract worth Rs 1 crore with Sony Entertainment Television. A daily dose of entertainment, the show hosted by Mandira Bedi and Manav Gohil will be telecast every Monday - Thursday at 8.30 pm and Fridays at 8 pm. The chosen ones will be a part of Fame Gurukul, an academy run by the headmistress Ila Arun in Mumbai. They will be trained in music and dance and their talent will be put to test by a team of industry experts. They will get to meet and perform alongside some of the music industry's biggest stars who also mentor the contestants. Each week the jury will announce the weakest four performers while the faculty and the viewers decide the contestant's fate with one out of four students getting eliminated every week. But the drama doesn't end here. In a highly charged moment, the fellow students too get a chance to vote on which contestants deserve to remain in the academy and who leaves.

The 14 contestants
Mona Bhatt from Delhi. She is a multifaceted person who can set the stage on fire with her singing and dancing. However, off stage she is rather reserved and focused. This very focused approach is what she brings to singing and feels that there is no substitute for riyaz.

Anubhav Suman from Ghaziabad. A trained singer with a BA in music, versatility is Anubhav's strong point. He particularly likes to sing ghazals and old Mohammad Rafi numbers.

Deepak Singh Meher from Delhi. He has no formal training; he is a born performer. He is unique, in the manner in which he stands and the way his expressions change. Even during the auditions the funny man had the judges in splits. He also writes songs as a pastime. Deepshikha Sharma from Jaipur. Dancing and singing has always been her passion. Deepshikha is multi-talented and just needs a stage to set her going. She feels that her ability to involve the audience is her strength and loves singing Hindi film and western songs. Ruprekha Bannerjee from Kolkata. It has always been clear to her that she wants to be a playback singer. she began her career by doing the 'la la la...' bits, then moved on to the antara to a stanza in songs for Bengali films. Ruprekha has also sung the title song for a Bengali serial. Arijit Singh from Murshidabad. After the Kolkata round of auditions for Fame Gurukul got postponed, this young man trekked all the way to Delhi. He switched strategies in the second auditions in Kolkata and sang a ghazal and the Sukhvinder hit 'Chaiya chiaya...'. Arpita Mukherjee from Mumbai. She has been single mindedly chasing the goal of becoming a playback singer. Music runs in her family. A trained classical singer Arpita likes to win audiences a la Asha Bhosle ishtyle. Gurpreet Kaur from Jabalpur. She is the second contestant from this place after Prajakti Shukre (Indian Idol) to make it to the final. A versatile singer she has a special way with Punjabi songs. A dancer she knows how to connect with the audience. Amit Jadhav from Mumbai. Music has been a way of life for him. But he has never had any structured training and does not feel disadvantaged because of it. Amit has learnt everything he knows from Hindi film songs. Rex D'Souza from Mumbai. With a genuine love of performing, he enjoys being on stage. He is out to win hearts as all his favourite numbers are romantic songs and he believes that a smile can conquer every mountain. Kirti Sagatia from Mumbai. Music runs in his blood and he comes from a strong lineage of folk music. His father - Karsan Sangatia was the one who punctuated the song of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam with a Gujarati flavour. Kirti has always been close to showbiz and has never thought of doing anything but singing. Shamit Tyagi from Mumbai. This is a story of a struggling artist who has been doing all kinds of jobs just to be able to keep singing. He has six years of classical training and believes in connecting with the audience through his voice. Qazi Touqeer from Srinagar. Qazi's mother is a teacher and father - a lawyer. However, this young man wants to become an accomplished singer and has trained under his uncle who is a singer as well.

Chhavi Sodhani from Mumbai. This Hyderabad girl moved to Mumbai a few years ago in order to pursue a career in music. Extremely focused and hard working, Chhavi has been learning music from the age of five.
