Hello Everyone!

I'm Sonia.

I started watching this show barely three days ago, and I am hooked to it already. Ashutosh Gowarikar's initiative of taking mountaineering as a concept has taken me by waves of surprise. I never imagined such a show on Indian TV, but I must admit, it's got a beautiful start and I am hoping for a good journey ahead.

Amidst my introductory post, my title shares my sentiments. Every character in the show wants to climb Mount. Everest for a reason. Apart from their passion for hiking, all of them have a secret, a mission which is connected to their ascent to Everest.

I see Anjali as an absolute inspiration. She's a symbol of women empowerment. Between a group where men seem to always lead, she being a woman, has taken control in her hands. She wants to climb the Mountain so that do her father proud, and clear a misjudgment by him that a daughter cannot do what a son can. I LOVE THIS! I say yes to women empowerment!

I'm intrigued to see Arjun on the other hand, a character who may be cliche considering that such characters have been seen on Indian TV before (arrogant rich young men with a bad past), however, what interests me is that he is a man of guilt. Behind all that perfection, all the stardom, is a guilty and lonely Arjun, who left his friend to die. I am interested in seeing how the creatives bring him to face this truth. A hidden mystery about someone always makes me all the more eager.

Akash is a balanced character. I am not yet able to figure out what I think about him. I feel that it's too early to judge him, and I absolutely agree with Mr. Roongta that Akash has a tendency of changing his mind too quickly. If things set right and he falls in love with Anjali, he may back out from this relationship too, because he is always confused. But this is how his character will develop. I may be wrong in my judgment of him, but I am very much looking forward to see how and what fruit his struggles to save his Shikha Maa come to.

On a side note, I love Colonel Abhiyankar! He is such a gem of person, I wish there were more of him in the real world. Just figured in a recent episode that Anjali reminded him of his wife. I am now waiting to watch what exactly happened when he took his wife to Mount. Everest? Where she is now? Perhaps he too has a story behind his hike, his wife might have been trapped in the climb and perhaps lost her life? This is interesting.

Rajat Roongta is at his ultimate best. I've always seen him in the role of a rich person who might be arrogant, but thinks and talks straight. Clear acting by Kapoor, which I appreciate. Suhasini Mulay as Shikha Maa is also wonderful! I've watched some of her works before, and I know that she's definitely good at what she does.

In short, all the characters are full of life, and I'm waiting to see where Mount. Everest leads their lives to!

Personally, I have the experience of climbing Mount, Kilimanjaro (highest free standing point in Africa) in the year 2009. It has been, by far, the most beautiful journey of my life. The sceneries, the fears, the strength, the altitude sickness, the mood swings, the hunger, EVERYTHING! It's all attached to me as a strong memory. Mountaineering is indeed a beautiful experience, although I wouldn't ever opt for Mount. Everest (personal POV) considering the risk it has and incidents that have already incurred. I however, am all for mountaineering and would encourage everyone to give it a try, at least once!

Looking forward to some healthy discussions in this forum, you will probably see me around more often, now that I am watching and following the show.

Cheers!

Hi! Welcome to the forum. I am Samridhi.
Its nice to see more & more people joining this forum & appreciating the show. I have never climbed mountains before. I always wanted to. After watching this show, I want to all the more. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I am also in love with this show & the characters. I like how you described them.
Anjali is truly an inspiration to many women. I like how she did not mourn & weep to every single person about her dad not loving her. Rather, she made that her inspiration to do something in life. Her dialogue of wanting to make a place in her father's heart, rather than EVEREST touches me each time. We need to learn more from her & be inspired to take on challenges, rather than nag, & be pessimistic about things.

Akash IMO is a sweet, positive guy. You are right. He is indecisive & tends to be confused, so he takes one decision one minute, & another in another minute. But the best thing about him is that his heart is pure. He cares about people, & what happens around him. Even though Arjun has been rude to him a few times, he doesn't hold grudges. Rather he apologized & moved on quickly, like Anjali. What he lacks, however, is the kind of drive that Anjali has. Since they are summitting together, I am sure that wouldn't be a problem anymore.

Arjun is intriguing. Definitely. Unlike others, I don't see him as the stereotypical, arrogant rich guy. I would call him overconfident. But not arrogant, because he doesn't look down on others. He was rude at times, but the way he tried to blend in with the Mountain Rockers during the course (in his own subtle way without expressly stating that he is part of the team) & help Raman, Kabir, Akash - it all shows that he definitely has a heart. He is not as indifferent to people around him, like he shows. He is ambitious & constantly wants to be the best, so I feel bad for him because somewhere I think he is very harsh on himself. The way he remembered his orphanage days in the initial episodes makes me feel that he probably wants a normal life so bad, but he's scared that that would make him return back to his poverty & being nobody, which he despises. That's just what I think of Arjun, not sure if the makers intended it this way.

Regarding Corl Abhayankar, his wife died. And I think he wants to take Anjali with him on the expedition because that would make him feel like he's fulfilling his wife's dream by taking "her" as in another person who has the same passion & dream to do something for their loved ones. He is a sweet character. I really wish we have more teachers like him, who believe in helping their students nurture character wise as well, rather than just imparting them with bookish knowledge. He has a lot of pain in his heart & I hope that summitting EVEREST helps him free himself from the guilt/pain of his wife's death.

All the characters are a pleasant watch. And the locations, the music, everything is a plus point. I am glad that StarPlus is marketing this show well. A good product with good marketing can reach heights.

Hope to see you more often! Sorry for the long post :)

Loved reading ur post and experience you shared with us which is too note for.. Hope some more things from you.. I'm loving this 3 characters Arjun, Akash and Anjali.. Hi. Loved your post. 😊
And I am also loving all the characters in the show be it the leads or the sides. And the best thing that Ashustosh Gowarikar has done is shown them all as grey which is what most people really are. Human beings are complex characters and full marks to the director for bringing out that complexity instead of making them black and white caricatures like the usual soaps.
An Arjun who can create a scene when his water bottle is rejected or when he is asked to put up his own tent, can pitch in to save another person's life, thank the NIM staff and also show concern for others. This is how most people are. U do something in a fit of anger but that does not mean u forget being human. He is also shown haunted by his previous mistake of letting his friend die.

Aakash too is more scared than confused. His guilt of not saving Gaurav is killing him and his life has come to standstill because of it.

He knows he is not fit for the job and is trying to move away but life and circumstances are forcing him towards it. He is also going through an internal struggle as to what is good for him and what he needs to do to save the woman who helped him in the time of need and whose son he could not save. In fact these circumstances are what would give him a push to move forward in life.

Hi Sonia :) This is a lovely post, love your take on the characters. I can't resist but type in a lengthy reply, do bear with me.
I completely agree with you here, the concept of the show is very interesting and comes as an element of surprise. I saw the promos on SP initially and was surprised a show as such was being made, I thought that there would be nothing great about the show as it's not possible for a tv show to film something of the sort and so I never turned back.
Some randomn surfing through the channels had me land up on one of the episodes, it was when Raman was locked up in his room. The show had me then and there. I decided to watch a week more, and I was glued. Just Recently managed to watch all the episodes and I must say I was so wrong. The quality of the show in terms of script writing, shoot and actors has left me spell-bounded.

Anjali is a breath of fresh air, she's very different from other leading ladies. I really like the balance in her character, its remarkable how she turned the devastating truth of what her father felt about her in such a positive manner.
To look at the situation from a far off perspective it does sound crazy just as Maithli reacted, that Anjali decided to summit Mount Everest, coz that was her father's dream, but the way everything played out and the way Anjali was filled with this ambition and desire, everything just felt like this is what was supposed to happen, in a matter of two days or a week, Anjali is meant to summit the Everest. That's all that it needed to make it look so realistic, coz who leaves in a matter of 2 days to NIM and then in a month to Everest ? Sounds Incredulous.

Arjun holds a lot of my attention in the episodes, I like your use of words, a man of guilt. Very apt. I find myself thinking about what Arjun did to his friend most of the time. It seemed ruthless, but then it seemed the right decision. What else could he have done, stayed there watch him die. Take him back, he would die in 10 mins and then head back up again wasting 20 mins of his own oxygen? As he stated in one of the episodes, The perspective changes when one is at a height, Right or Wrong changes its definition, and it's not so easy then. Anjali in that scene seemed naive as she countered it's an easy decision as to what's right. the difference being just one thing, he has been there, she hasn't. Naturally no matter how right the decision may seem in logic, one can't forget that Sanbir(did i get the name right?) was the only one who accompanied Arjun in the rest of the journey while others returned after the avalanche and this is where the emotional connect between Arjun and Sanbir comes into play. Arjun looked quite cold in that scene, his emotional distress was not as visible, being in that situation. I believe because he was driven by his target more than anything else. Arjun comes across as a person good at heart, and the guilt he carries, it will be interesting to see this aspect change in him.

I found it very interesting that Col Abhiyankar mentioned in one of the classes where Arjun was present too, that mountains should not be your friends, your team should be, they help you through. You can't be a traitor to them. A difference of opinion. Arjun's Guru does emphasize to Arjun, that up in the mountains you are alone, if you dont think about yourself, no one else will. So which thought overpowers in the future, and what choices Arjun will make will sure be interesting to watch.

Akash I feel is a person who rides on emotions. Past year of his life does seem to suggest that, having lost his parents at the age of 17, not being able to overcome Gaurav's loss. A messy house with no work, added loans. He seems lost. He reached late to Mr Roongta and he didn't seem very interested in Mount Everest project, but the moment he realized his parents house is under threat, he kicked back in action and this time he reached way early, a little thought and the good part in him decided he couldn't do everest even after training, coz that would mean risking others life as well as his own, Shikha Ma falls ill and he again rushes back to the job with sincerity, Emotions, that's what sets him in action I feel.

Like the subplots of Roongta, his family bg, shrewdness, secrecy abt Everest- the mystery will not be out soon I reckon. Abhiyankar as a teacher and his family bg and Shikha's strength who having lost her son tries to overcome the grief and considers Akash like her own.

Script is amazing, well-written. I like how with each episode we are left with something new.

Thank you for sharing your personal experience, Wow. I dont know a thing about mountaineering and what it must be like.
I dont exactly get inspired to climb a mountain, I think I am not fond of heights :P But I like the emphasis on staying fit.

Hi Samridhi,

Don't be sorry, thanks for sharing your thoughts!

While I agree with the rest of your viewpoints, I have a question about one - have they already shown how Colonel Abhayankar's wife died? I was assuming she died on the ascent to Everest? But it doesn't seem the case. It sounds like she died before the experience.

And thanks for the warm welcome, I'll definitely be around.

Hey! Yeah, I agree, Ashutosh Gowarikar has chosen the actors very wisely. I never imagined that a show of such a nature would exist on Indian TV. But I am extremely overwhelmed to have found Everest, and I do hope that the makers give us the best of mountaineering!

Hi, I like your post too! You've mentioned something that didn't catch my attention earlier - all the characters in this show are grey. This is an absolutely fanstastic point! Yes, I agree that humans are never white; there's always a grey side to everyone. AG has indeed done a fabulous job with this.

I'm glad that all of you are coming together to share our points of view regarding the characters. Its helping me get more insight on the show.

Don't worry about writing a lengthy reply, I am all for reading everyone's observations!

Your take on Anjali is very interesting. If there was anyone else, or myself for that matter, I would probably be devastated after knowing that my father hates me. That's probably something what all other generic Indian TV shows would have shown. The rona dhona and the endless drama. AG, on the other hand took the same point and showcased it in a positive manner. I am truly impressed at seeing Anjali's positive spirit towards her father.

Your pointers about Arjun are so apt! You're taking the words from my mouth. I couldn't have explained Arjun any better. He is a man who might have done something wrong from a moral aspect, but practically, it all made sense because like you said, his friend would have died anyway, and all Arjun would have gotten is valuable time wasted. Seeing a little bit of Arjun's positive energy, I feel that he is not that bad after all, the tad bit of arrogance of being the best mountaineer and the guilt of leaving his friend to die, are what makes him the man he is. The upcoming ascent to Everest will definitely be worth watching how Arjun's perspective changes.

Mountaineering is absolutely amazing! What I shared above is not even a quarter of what I felt when I was up there. I had mixed feelings. At one point I was happy to be able to conquer 5,895 metres above sea level within three days. But at the same time I could deeply feel the cold, the lack of oxygen, the horrible-tasting food and feeling of 'why did I even come here'. Overall, it was a beautiful experience!

I absolutely loved your analysis, and I appreciate that you took your time to let me know what your observations were. Thank you!
