Chapter 24

Chapter 23

He felt really annoyed at the world in particular and reached the chai shop hoping to have some good old chit chat with friends. As expected, he found Billa and Jaggi over there and they easily formulated a conversation about something random. After listening to them for a few minutes, Baldev realized he was only hearing their words while their meaning was going above his head entirely. Instead his mind just refused to stop thinking about one particular thing, rather a person. Who was Veera? And why couldn't he remember her, damn it! He punched the air with his fist.

Then suddenly Jaggi began talking about the Krishi Vidyalaya and Baldev could not ignore him anymore.

"maine suna hai ki Krishi vidyalay ka kaam lag bhag poora ho chuka hai..ab bijli ke taar lag gaye, bohot jald udghatan bhi ho jaayega..Sampooran chachaji ka sapna poora hog ate Veera parjaai ji ka bhi"(I heard that KV's construction is almost completed..now the power lines have been drawn, really soon the time will come for inauguration and then sampooran uncle's dream will come true along with Veera's..) Jaggi bit his tongue suddenly and stopped talking as if he said something wrong.

Parjai..parjai? meaning sister in law! Did he hear it right? Another mystery, this one too surrounding Veera; again.. He was amazed and shocked at the same time.

"kya kaha tune? Phirse bol.."(What did you say just now? say it again) Baldev said interrupting what Jaggi was about to say next.

"maine kaha ki Krishi vidyalay ka kaam poora hone ko hai"(I said KV's work is almost done)

"nahi woh nahi..uske baad. Tune Veera ko kya bulaya? Parjaai?"(No, not that..what did you call Veera? sister in law?)

Jaggi and Billa could only stare at each other in apprehension as, that word had slipped accidentally but now they needed to cover it up. Billa immediately came to Jaggi's rescue and said, "nahi Praji, aap ne galat suna..yeh kyon us ladki ko Parjaai kahega?"(No bro, you misheard it..why'd he call her as sister in law?)

"haan ji praaji..main kyon us kudi nu parjaai kehne laga?"(Yup Bro, why would I address her that way?) Jaggi smiled trying to lighten the serious situation.

At once Baldev knew that they were trying to placate him. He had clearly heard the word parjaai' and now these two were vehemently denying it. His anger took a steep hike and he stood up suddenly catching Jaggi by collar and pinning him to the wall behind.

"main behra nahi hoon.aur maine apne kaanon se tujhe parjaai kehte hue suna hai..bata koun hai yeh Veera? kya lagti hai woh meri?"(I'm not deaf and I heard it through my own ears..you clearly said parjaai'..tell me who is Veera? how's she related to me?) he said through his teeth, pronouncing each word slowly.

Jaggi looked at Billa and he nodded, as if saying go ahead'. Jaggi gulped once and began to say, "woh ladki aap ki bachpan ki dushman thi..phir bade hone ke baad, usse aap ki dosti ho gayi..uske baad aap ko lagne laga ki woh aap se, woh aap se pyar karti hai..aap ne uske baaton ko sach maan liya aur aap usse shaadi karna chahte the..lekin.."(That girl, was your childhood enemy..but after growing up, you two sort of became friends..but then, but then you began to think she loves you..you believed her words to be true and you desired to marry her but then..) he trailed off hesitatingly.

"Lekin kya?"(Then what?) Baldev asked.

Billa cut in, "lekin praaji..aap ko galatfehmi hui thi..woh aapse pyar nahi karti thi..woh toh aapko bas-"(But it was a misunderstanding..she did not love you in real..she used to think of you as..) he stopped, as he did not know what Veera considered Baldev to be.

"paheliyan mat bujhao, woh mennu kya..kya samajthi thi woh mennu?"(I don't like riddles, what did she think of me? What did she consider me?) Baldev spit the words out.

Billa opened his mouth to speak but no words came out. Instead his mind was speculating on Veera and Baldev's strange relationship; Veera always stopped Baldev from doing wrong things, always on guard. And then, she did a wrong thing herself by breaking his heart and deceiving him. Even during the sarpanch lections, Veera mocked and made fun of him. But then, it was her perhaps, who was most hurt when Baldev had the accident, god knew she did not sit in peace for a second that night. And later, when everyone else lost hope of bringing him out of coma, it was Veera's idea that revived him. and also, Billa remembered carrying her back home in his jeep few days ago, when they had found her by the roadside during heavy rains, soaked and hurt. Veera was semi conscious and probably in a state of delirium. "Baldev..tu.. mennu kaise.. bhool sakta hai?"(How..can you forget me?) Billa had heard her moan faintly. That little sentence had contained so much pain. Something had stirred in his heart and he had felt pity for the poor girl.

u will find that out in the future, i can tell u this much it will bring a turning point to VeeBa, i will not tell how but lots of things will happen and u will absolutely love it 😉
