Chapter 1:
Baldev was standing at the window of his room looking at the sky. His eyes were burning. The pain of losing the election was breaking his heart. More over the pain that the person whom he had loved wholeheartedly, for whom he could do anything, had played with his emotions was shattering his heart into pieces. He was so confident he would win the elections. After all he knew all the tricks of the trade. He knew everything about politics, the shrewd tactics and he had tried everything. Right from making big promises of building entertainment hubs in the villages and having all the facilities that cities provide, bribing the villagers with soft drinks to organizing parties for the men of the village to provide them free entertainment, he had done all. In fact he had been successful to a huge extent and had won the confidence of most of the villagers if Veera had not intervened. Veera with her sweet gestures and fake love and concern had distracted him from concentrating on the election campaign and he had neglected that even a single vote against him could prove dangerous. While Veera had kept him busy with her foolish demands, her brother Ranvijay had reached out to each and every people of the village, visited their house and made them aware that basic things like school, colleges , hospitals were much more needed than building multiplexes and entertainment hubs. And eventually on the day of the voting, when Baldev was confident that nobody could beat him, Ranvijay had secured victory with a clear margin at the polls with all of the villagers casting their vote in his favor. When the results were announced Baldev could not believe his ears and then when he realized his dreams were shattered, he felt like the rug swept out from under his feet. He could not understand what went wrong in his approach. He had remained numb for almost an eternity or so it looked to him, after which he came back home with his mother after Billa and Jaggi felt it was the best thing to do. That had been a couple of hours ago. Since that time he stood at the window recollecting, replaying all the incidents of the past few days and analyzing what went wrong when suddenly everything became crystal clear to him. So it was Veera who had used him. After all why did she suddenly accept his feeling in spite of pursuing her for so long and she constantly insulting him? So this was her master plan to shatter his dreams. He had always maintained his limit even when they were enemies, he had never tried to hurt her emotionally, but she had stooped to such a low level to even her game with him. He could never forgive her. She had destroyed every reason to love her. He hated her now like never before and would hate her till the day he was alive. His train of thoughts were interrupted by the shrill voice of his mother.
"Yeh andhere main ki kar raha hai Baldev? Chal aaja niche khana kha le".
"Mainu bhook nahi hain beeji, mujhe akele chad dijiye" Baldev retorted back.
Bansuri switched on the light and began shouting.
"Aaise khana na khane se ki tenu sarparnch ki kursi mil jani hain. Jab maine bar bar bola tha ki thoda apni aakhen khol tab to meri baat nahi suni ab ki faida. Haye mujhe to yeh soch ke hi ghabrahat hone lagdi hain ki main kal se pind ke aurto ke samne jaoyo kaise. Ab to sare mera mazaak udhayenge aur Ratan ki wah wahi karenge.Tune to mujhe kahin ka nahi choda Baldev. Ab kismat main jo hai wo to bhugatna hi parega.Chal ab khana kha le".
This was the final nail on the coffin. Baldev banged his hand on the window pane and turned and sat down on the bed. Every muscle of his body was shaking with rage. He looked at his mother and the fire that Bansuri saw in his eyes was enough to tell her that it was not the right time to mess with her son.
" Jale pe namak chirankna bandh karo beeji. Mainu gussa mat dilao. Akela chaad do mainu".
Bansuri went away nodding her head in disapproval and contemplating how she is going to handle the embarrassment caused by her son in front of the villagers.
Baldev was trying hard to fight the pain his entire being was going through. He wanted to get away from this pain. He was the Sher of the Pind, not a coward. He will not run away from the Pind. He will face it and take back what is rightfully his. He is going to teach Ranvijay a lesson he is going to remember all his life.
Since childhood, Ranvijay had always been in the good books of the villagers and his father. It was because of Ranvijay, that his own father considered him a worthless son. He had even supported Ranvijay over Baldev in the election campaign and had even refused to bless his own son. He had one chance to prove his father wrong but Ranvijay had taken away even that chance. He is going to do same. He will never let Ranvijay win over him. His head was throbbing with anger. He needed to douse his anger and start planning against Ranvijay. Baldev stood up from the bed and grabbed the jeep keys from the table and barged out of the house.

It was quite late when he returned. His feet staggering due to effect of the alcohol. He had to gulp many bottles to douse the fire in him. Because tomorrow would be a new dawn. A new Baldev will be born, one who can cross all the limits to achieve his aim, one whose sole aim in life is to destroy the happiness of Ranvijay and Veera. And for that the old good hearted Baldev had to die.
The horn of his jeep had awakened Bansuri and she was astonished to see her beloved son in such a state. But she did not want to wake Balwant coz she knws he would misunderstand the pain Baldev is going through. She quietly opened the main door and helped her son to his room. After helping him lie on the bed, Bansuri placed a hand on his head and unmindfully a lone tear dropped from her eyes. After all she was his mother, though she may be tough on the outside she knew how much the post of the sarparnch meant to her son. She had never seen her son in a vulnerable state and it pained her a lot. She closed the door behind her and quietly went to sleep hoping her son would soon recover the pain.

Balwant was sitting at the breakfast table, enjoying his breakfast and Bansuri was busy serving him. She was in deep thought. She was concerned about the way her son Baldev was reacting these days. Three days had passed since the election results were announced. Baldev would leave home early and would return late at night usually in an inebriated state. He did not speak to anyone in the house, not even to her. All her attempts to cheer him up had failed, she had even prepared his favorite dishes yesterday, but he had refused to eat anything and asked her not to worry about him.
"Bansuriji, Aapka nalayak ladla dikhayi nahi de raha hain do teen dino se, abhi bhi uski matargasti kam nahi huyi". Balwant's voice broke her thoughts.
"Kal ghar der se aya tha. Shayed so raha hoga mera puttar". She tried to cover up.
Just then Baldev came down the stairs adjusting his shirt sleeves.
Balwant looked at him descending the stairs and said "Inne savere savere kitthe chal diya? Inna sab kuch ho jane ke baad bhi tujhe akal nahi ayi. Ab to kuch dhang ka kaam kar le, nalayak"
Baldev just shot a glance at his father. He then looked at his mother and said," Beeji main jaruri kaam se ja raha hoon, lautne main der hogi. Aur inse keh dijiye apna paath apne ladle Ranvi ke liye bachake rakhe".
"Baldev! Aapne piyo se aise baat karte hain.Yeh hai tera apne piyo ke liye samman? Din ba din badtameez banta ja raha hai"
"Jab piyo ne bete ki taraf koi farz nibhaya hi nahi ho, to kaisa tameez aur kaisa samman".
Baldev proceeded to leave and was about to collide with Gunjan who had just entered the house with a box of sweets.
"Veerji, aap kaise ho? Main aapse milne ane wali thi par kaam se atak gayi thi. Aap thik to ho na? ", Gunjan asked concerned.
"Kyun, tujhe kya laga mere sapne toot gaye is gham main pagal ho jaunga. Jaake bol dena apne us Ranvi nu main Baldev Singh hoon, Pind ka Sher, itni asani se har nahi manta. Ghayal sher se bura koi nahi honda and un logo ne mainu ghayal karke mujhse panga leke accha nahi kiya. Ghayal sher ka war bahut hi khatarnak honda hai. Aur waise bhi do din ki khushi hain mana le, baki poori jindagi use roke bitani hain. Isliye apni bakwaas apne paas rakh aur jinka ladla hai woh unke sath jaake apni khushi mana" Baldev said looking at the box of sweets and motioned her to move from his way.
Gunjan moved out of his way and he stormed out of the house.
"Dekha Bansuriji, kitna badtameez hota ja raha hai! Apne jijaji ke bare main koi aise baat karta hain. Abhi to sambhal lijiye apne nalayak puttarnu."
"Aap to rehne dijiye, Sarparnchji. Aaj Ranvi ka saath nahi deke apne bete ka sath diya hota to yeh din dekhna nahi parta aapko. Aap aur aapki ladli beti gayiyen apne ladle Ranvi ke gungaan. Mujhe aur mere puttar nu apne haal par chad dijiye". Bansuri angrily moved to her room.
Balwant and Gunjan were left standing in the hallway confused as to how to react the mother son duo.
