Chapter 9 Raj Kumari Swarnlekha
"Ranaji ka hukum hai ke aap abhi aaram kare woh aap ko kal milenge."
(Ranaji has asked you to rest, he will see you tomorrow.)
That certainly put a lot of nerves to rest in some way for her but not completely as the intrigue as to the change in her life was very much a big factor Gayatri.
Smiling in confirmation of the ladies words, Gayatri looks at the platter of clothes and jewelry left for her for the morning and is again surprised by the grandeur of even the little things in her new home.
Walking to the balcony of the room at a distance Gayatri realizes that she has a view of the Kings room from hers sat in the balcony in an armchair is none other than Ranaji and what better view for the bride other than her husband.
...
The next morning as Gayatri wonders out of her room dressed in one of her favorite saari's she had brought along with her she was in search of the Puja room but had strayed quite a bit from her room now until two men seemed to be walking the corridor in her direction and as they got closer Gayatri saw that one of the men was Ranaji himself.
Not sure if he would even acknowledge her as he walked past Gayatri did catch a good glimpse. Her husband was tall, dark handsome and incredibly well dressed in a English tweed waistcoat and shirt. She'd never seen the king that way before and it was harder to believe that this was the very man she was now married to.
There is she was just plain old 'Gayatri' in her cotton saari, and curly locks the picture of simplicity. She didn't have time to think a great deal like she was accustomed to because Ranaji was soon within a few steps and reacting the way she thought was probably the best Gayatri swept her saari over her head in a goonghat (veil) she didn't know quite why but it was instinct. A mix of upbringing supposedly and perceived expectation.
She watched Ranaji pause and the man with him excuse himself to walk off although she tried hard not to do anything wrong seen as this was her first day after their marriage she already seemed to be lost as per Ranajis observations.
He wished her good morning to which she acknowledged and replied with a subh prabhat because she could work out that much of the little she knew of English and pretty sure she was correct.
Rana's eyes scanned the surroundings there seemed to be no one with Gayatri and she seemed to be heading in a direction that would not take her anywhere desirable. Shouting a guard Rana instructs him to take Gayatri to which ever room it is she is looking for and then leaves.
...
On his walk through the corridors of the Mehel Ranaji stops off at Rani Subharna's quarters where she is preparing for some royal event or other and dismisses her servants at first glance of Rana entering her room. He wasn't interested in greetings he just wanted to know why his new bride had been abandoned on her first day in the mehel.
Is there a reason Gayatri is wondering round the mehel lost on her first day here that too on her own, Swarnlekha kaha hai? His tone was very regal and that of almost disappointment as to why what he had asked for was not actioned.
Subharna as ever replied with the upmost respect.
Hame aapse is vishey mein baat karni thi.. woh Raj kumari Swarnlekha abhi tak raighad se vaapas nahin ayi hai . (That was something I wanted to talk to you about Rajkumari Swarnlekha isn't back from her parents home yet.)
Looking confused surely that was before he had left for his week away wasn't it. "Is baat ko kaafi samay hogayay hai."
Feeling a little ashamed that it had come to this Subharana doesn't quite know how to put this other than just the way it was.
Ham jaante hai Kuwar Lakshyaraj gayey the une lene lekin unhone mana kar diya... Unka kehna hai ke jaab tak aap nahin lotenge woh mehel mein kadam nahin rakhengi.
("Kuar Lakshyaraj did go to collect her but she refused, she had said she would only return in your presence. ")
...
Ranaji was preparing to leave for Raigad shortly after hearing about Swarnlekha he had changed into a more traditional suit and as just happened to cross his mothers path to leave she had a reminder for him something as king that hadn't slipped his mind but he remained silent at Raj mata's words anyway who probably was unaware how important this was and it wasn't just an outing for leisure.
"Shaam ko lotyeyga sarur rana ji choti rani ki baaki sari rasme to aap ke bina ho sakti hai par suhaag raat nahin." (Do come home this evening ranaji, gayatris others rituals can be done without you but her wedding night is incomplete.)
It wasn't a reminder he didnt need but listened non the less and then continued for a lot of what his mother said these days was just sarcasm at the number of his wifes.
...
Raja Amar Singh was the ruler of a neighboring Rajya and father to Swarnlekha who was daughter in law to the Deo family. Having said that Ranaji always saw a younger sister in Swarnlekha rather than a daughter in law and so there bond was little more special between them in that way than the norm. Rana also knew that Swarnalekha was a sensible girl bought up in a royal upbringing, she would never react without reason and so when she denied coming home Indravarden was concerned not only as king for the strain on the relationship between to Rajyas but for Swarnlekha.
There was a certain doubt that Ranaji had in his mind behind this whole ordeal and what would put it to rest was seeing Swarlekha for himself.
...
Up in the quarters of Raja Amar Singh's Daughters room Raj kumari swarnlekha gets the message that someone from her inlaws were her to come collect her.
Sat infront of the royal dressing table Swarnlekha was a pretty lady slender, fair, beautiful but her eyes certainly didn't carry the sparkle that you would expect from a princess.
Agar Kuwar ji aayey hai toh hamari mana hai. (if its Kuwar Lakshyaraj then its no!)
But only this time the servant had a slightly different message that got Swarnlekhas attention. It wasn't Lakshya raj it was Rana Indravarden Singh Deo himself.
...
Meanwhile Ranajis is in talks with Swarnlekhas father .
Hamri beti aap ke mehel mein Khushi nahin hai rana ji is liyey woh aap ke saath nahin lautegi. "I don't think my daughter is happy in your Raj mehel Ranaji I see upset in her eyes, and so she will not return to Amerkot."
Rana could not himself understand what was of concern to Swarnlekha in his abcence but before he could reply Swarnlekha had entered the room.
Claiming that as long as Ranaji was present she had no problem in going back to her inlaws.
Surprising her father Swarnlekha approaches the two powerful men and greets Ranaji by touching his feet to which Rana picks up the princess with a smile.
Rephrasing herself with a smile now she had seen Ranaji Swarnlekha excused herself to get ready leaving both men a lot of thought. Rana ji had seen something not quite right in Swarnlekhas eyes there was something beyond what could be seen on the surface for sure but he reasurred her father that whatever it was he would get to the bottom of it and not only that but he would do everything in his power to make sure Swarnalekha was happy in her sasural.
Agreeing purely on the words of the reputation that Rana held as a man Swanlekhas father agreed but with warning and caution for Ranaji.
...
The journey back to Amerkot was combination of Ranajis royal car and gaurds followed by a Royal horse and carriage and with Swarnlekhas permission Ranaji had requested to travel with her in the cart purely because he wanted to observe her.
"May I ask why you refused to return to Amerkot in my absence.?"
Ranaji was very good at anaysing people he watched Swarna answer yet so unable to look in his eyes. There was something she wasn't telling him that was for sure. She looked afraid for some reason something he had never seen her till date.
"Hamari kuwar sa se ladayi hogayi thi aur ham kuch vakt akele ghuzar na chahte they..amerkot mein sab hamesha unka paksh lete hai aur hamara koi nahin toh .." I had an argument with Lakshyaraj everyone in amerkot always sides with him and nobody with me..
Nobody but him, Rana had scene enough to know that there was a lot more going on than met the eye but he knew that some of those things he was going to have to find out on his own as he promised Swarnlekhas father and so changed the subject to Gayatri who was going to be someone Swarnlekha would soon meet.

Next chapter/s:
Gayatri looks at the reflection in the mirror worridly as Swarnlekha helps her with one of her earrings.
Aap jaanti hai raaj gharano mein sughaag raat ke maayne kya hote hai? (Do you know what the significance of a wedding night is for royalty? ) Its about a king marking his queen as his own, as his wife and it doesn't have to be what you assume it to be. Ranaji is a kind, gentle, soft man, he is nothing to be scared of.
She said with a smile but instantly realized that Gayatri didn't understand a word of English but It was okay Gayatris eyes were filled with sincerity and that was the only thing one needed to please Rana Indravarden Singh Deo.
