Read the prologue and chapter 1 in one go, beautifully written, beautiful concept, loved his strong, confident and determined Gayatri and the way she directly spoke with Rajmata and got to know the truth about the marriage and how she told Ranaji that she will stay in his room.
Chapter Two
The royal doctor who was examining Gayatri came out and allayed everyone's fears saying, "Rani sa is out of danger. The bite was not too deep and the poison injected by the snake was also very little. She became unconscious as a result of this. I have given the anti-dote and some sedatives to Rani sa. She will be allright by tomorrow morning. However the snake which bit her was highly poisonous. If the bite had been a little deeper and a little longer, it wouldn't have been possible to save her."
Swarnaleka, Laksyaraj's wife and Ranaji's sister-in-law, who was personally tending to Gayatri and her comfort expressed her doubts, "How did this snake come into the garden in the first place? Baisa, I feel that some body might be behind this incident. You should investigate it properly."
Indravadan's evil Chachaji ground his teeth in anger while trying to give a pleasing smile and laughingly remarked, "Bahu, the answer is there in your question itself. It was the garden. You usually find insects, pests and sometimes even snakes there. (Can't this foolish girl keep her doubts to herself. I'm doing all this so that my son can be the Ranaji and she the Rani sa one day. And here she keeps throwing water on her prospects herself.)"
The Ranaji replied to this sarcastically saying, "Yes, Swarnaleka is a bit innocent and inexperienced. She does not know a number of things like this. Chachaji you find insects, pests and sometimes snakes not just in the garden but also inside the palace. Those within the palace are even more dangerous than those in the garden. The day I catch them red- handed you may rest assured that they will never get a chance to raise their poisonous hood."
Swarnaleka was laughing to herself at this indirect warning to her vicious father-in-law. She too was fed up of all the cheap politics and intrigue played by her own father-in-law, mother-in-law and her husband. There was no depths to which they could not fall for the sake of power.
But she could not voice out her opinions as they were her closest relations. Hers was the kind of dilemma Vibhishan faced with his brother, Ravan. Before leaving, she said, "Bhaisa should I stay along with Rani sa for the night. She might need help." Ranaji said in a stern and menacing voice, "No. I will stay with her. You need not trouble yourself. I do not want to give one more chance to that snake to hurt Gayatri. I'll take care of her myself. You too know that this is not a Rajmahal but a Raazmahal."
As all this was happening, the Rajmata was conspicuous by her absence. She was closeted in a room along with the Rajpurohit and Badi Rani Ma. Badi Rani was expressing her displeasure to Rajmata, "What have you done, Priyamvada? If you commit a mistake without your knowledge, it is an error. If you do it with your full senses, it is a crime. You knew the truth about Ranaji's kundali and yet you commited the same mistake. Last time, Sulakshana paid the price with her life. This time you want Gayatri to do the same? I really didn't expect that you would get Ranaji married again before I returned from the Somnath Mandir."
The Rajmata said, "I know that you always have problems with my decisions. But whatever I did was for Ranaji and Amerkot. There was no way to repay the debt we had taken from Govind Seth. So I was forced to get Ranaji and Gayatri married.
There was another reason for the marriage. Gayatri's mangalya yog and gajkesari yog are very strong. Nobody would be able to harm even a hair of Ranaji as long as she is alive. Similarly the sinking fortunes of this riyasat will revive and it will regain its lost glory after this marriage.
Last time also, I had to get the support of Sulakshana's father to help in Ranaji's accession to the throne with British help. You know how Kunwarji is. He will do anything for power and kingship. You know what he did with Sulakshana? And...also the Bade Raja Saab..."
The Bade Rani ma's face flushed with anger, "Don't talk about outsiders. It is long since I have stopped considering him my son. I know the truth but don't have the proof to punish him. Let's see what we can do now. Rajpurohit ji what do you suggest?
The Rajpurohit said, "The present difficult times will last only till a year. If Rani sa survives till then, there will be no more danger to her life after that. If Ranaji and Rani sa do not have marital relations before that, her life will be safe even during this year. I told Rajmata all this before the marriage itself."
The Rajmata continued, "Ranaji still loves Sulakshana. He will never form a relationship with Gayatri so soon. It will take some time for him."
Badi Rani ma warned, "Why do you feel that the Ranaji will never feel anything for someone so beautiful, innocent, and loving like Gayatri before this one year? He is a human being after all. For how long can he be immune to such selfless love like Gayatri's? If he loses even Gayatri, can you imagine what his state would be?"
The Rajmata said, "We'll deal with that situation when we come to it."
That night, Ranaji was observing Gayatri sleeping like a child with a small smile on her lips. He could not resist sitting beside her, taking her hand in his and saying to her even though he knew she was not hearing and fast asleep, "Why are you smiling away like that? For that snake bite? You ought to be crying. You know I was very scared. I thought that you were dying. You would never know how painful it is to see someone dying and be left behind to rue over it. I thought that I hated you. But I was wrong. There are not many who could do what you did for me. Thank you. Why do you love me so much even after knowing you will never be loved in return? I don't deserve you. I..,.I seem to be disturbing you. I'll not talk anymore. Sleep. Sleep peacefully. You need rest. I'm awake and I'm watching. No harm will come to you."
