Chapter One
Gayatri had inner reserves of mental strength which she herself was unaware of. Another girl in her place would never have been able to survive this ordeal. That is how Gayatri survived all these years with those taunting bhabhis of hers. She knew that the Rana had a mistaken opinion about her. There was nothing she could do at the present moment to change his opinion about her. He was not at all willing to listen to her or her arguments. She had to wait until his anger for her head cooled down. It might take a day or two or more, but she had the patience and courage to wait for that day.
But before dealing with her husband, she had to speak to the one person because of whom they all were entrapped in this situation, the Rajmata, who had taken all of them for a ride. She understood by now that the letter she wrote to the Rana expressing her feelings had never reached him. After the Rana had left her all alone in her bridal chamber to pick up the broken pieces of her life and dreams, Gayatri went to the Rajmata's room at that late night hour even though it was against royal etiquette. Of what use was etiquette against lives!
Before the astounded Rajmata could open her mouth to admonish her erring daughter-in-law about how it was against royal customs for the queen to be outside her bridal chamber on nocturnal visits during her first night, Gayatri spoke, "Rajmata I will not waste too much of your time and come directly to the point. Was this marriage a deal between you and my father? Was Ranaji coerced into marrying me for the sake of the debt the royal family owes to my father?"
Rajmata had expected these questions from Gayatri but not so soon or so directly. There really was something decisive about this girl even though she was not a royal by birth. She was not so wrong in getting Indravadan married to her. She would make a good queen. Her son was surrounded on all sides by enemies. He needed somebody who was strong enough to take all of them head on beside him. He was mooning day in and day out about his first wife Sulakshana that he rarely took an interest in himself or affairs of the state after her demise.
As his mother and the Queen Mother, she had tried her best to manage all the affairs by herself but had failed because she was surrounded on all sides by enemies and palace intrigue. It was true that she had lied about the fact that Indravadan was Manglik. But it was a calculated risk. Gayatri's life would be in danger only when her son would get involved with her. As long as there was no relationship worth the name between the two, Gayatri's life would be safe.
The Rajmata cooly replied to Gayatri's questions, "I read your letter to Ranaji. A hope arose in the heart of a broken mother for her son. It is true that I told Ranaji that he had to marry you for the sake of the debt the royal family owes to your father. I knew that he would never have married you otherwise. This marriage was not a deal either for your father or for me. You might not know me very well but of course you know your father too well to assume that he would have made a deal out of your marriage. That's all I have to say. You are free to make your own decision."
Gayatri was lost in thought after listening to the Rajmata's words. What was she supposed to do now? Should she leave the palace? If there was one thing she priced above everything it was her self-respect, dignity and independence. Wouldn't it be at stake if she continued living in this palace even after knowing what her husband really felt for her?
Suddenly her mother's words echoed in her ears, "The right place of a girl is with her husband and not with her parents. It is immaterial whether you love him or not, or whether he loves you or not, or whether he is fit to be loved or not. Marriages are based on duty and responsibility. If you eventually get love and are able to love him, it's your luck, if you don't, it's your bad luck. Why do you keep fighting with your destiny over immaterial and evascent dreams?"
It was another beautiful morning at the Palace of Amerkot. Rana Indravadan had returned just a couple of hours before dawn. He did not find Gayatri in the bridal chamber. He heaved a sigh of relief that she had left saving him and her all the trouble and nuisance of maintaining a loveless marriage. He dozed off to sleep reminiscing all his beautiful moments with his late wife Sulakshana when he was rudely woken awake by the sweet voice of his second wife Gayatri emnating from the close quarters of his room.
She was asking him, "Ranaji where shall I keep all my clothes and things. There is no place in any of the closets. They are all full." Ranaji gasped in disbelief. This girl was still here after what happened yesterday night. He fumed, "How dare you ask such a thing to me?..."
Gayatri completely unpertubed by this outburst continued, "Of course! Who else will I ask when I am supposed to share this room with you. Look at you! How badly are you reacting to a simple question? Another person would have assumed that I was cheating you out of one half of your kingdom hearing you talk.
You are free to love me or hate me. I don't expect anything out of this marriage. If this marriage is a pain in the neck for you, it is responsibility for me now. I did not marry you for the queen ship. I was in love with you. But my love is no deal that it will vanish if you do not love me in return. It will remain with me until my last breath. Let's come to an agreement that both of us will act like husband and wife only for the outside world. Within this room we will remain as good friends. If even that does not suit you, we will remain just as roommates. I will not expect even friendship from you."
There was nothing much Indravadan could say after what Gayatri had spoken. He shrugged his shoulders as carelessly as if he was flicking away an annoying mosquito that had been irritating him since a long time. If she preferred to live in a loveless marriage, then fine! All that mattered to him now was that she would never try to come between his memories for Sulakshana. After that momentous argument with Ranaji, Gayatri left the room humming a soft tune to herself.
This girl who was now his wife was truly an enigma. Indravadan was trying to figure out who she exactly was as he was in his garden while practicing shooting according to his usual custom. Things at the Amerkot Palace were as constant and unvarying as though everything had been caught in a time warp. Nothing out of place, nothing interesting! If you'd try to figure the odd man or rather woman out, it would be his new queen, Gayatri.
Gayatri was nonchalantly plucking the flowers from the garden for her morning puja despite the admonitions of all the palace maids that they would do it for her. After a while, she turned her irritated face towards them and said, "Do all of you have no better work to do in the palace than dancing in attendance to me. I prefer doing my work by myself. Do you get it?"
They all fled from that spot shaking their heads in disbelief. It was the first time they had seen a Queen who hated being waited upon. Which Queen ever did her work by herself? Gayatri continued picking up the flowers when her eyes fell on a slimy and poisonous snake about to dip its poisonous fangs into Ranaji's toes. She ran towards him for her life. She threw the snake afar but not before it had dipped its poisonous fangs into her delicate hand while she was throwing it away from her dear husband.
Everything started getting blurry before her eyes. All she saw before her eyes closed was Ranaji's harried face and his peremptory call to his attendants to call the royal doctor post-haste. He was carrying her in his arms to her room while shouting to her all the while to not close her eyes until the doctor came. Tears were unceasingly flowing from his eyes as he continued clasping her hands tightly. He had seen one such death right before his eyes, his loved wife Sulakshana. He did not want to be a witness to a second such death which was on the verge of happening. That snake bite was meant to be his. Why did she take it upon herself?
